Hey guys and gals! I am in Southeastern North Carolina and I have a large piece of property (26 acres) and I am interested in starting an R/C park. Something for everyone. I want to use my pond for watercraft. I have a 12 acre pasture great for the planes and helicopters. This area would be fantastic for the buggies. I could literally have 20 or 30 dirt tracks on this land! I also have wonderful terrain differences. Naturally there is flatlands, hills, swampy areas and many varieties of different types of R/C heaven! My question to all of you, is this something that an R/C nut would pay for? Is it possible to get everything on one chunk of land? Would you pay $10.00 or $15.00 bucks a day to use the facility? Please help me on this one. If I don't develop the land into something useful, I'll need to sell it!

If you are planning an outdoor off-road...Good luck! There are WAY MORE TRACKS now than can be supported like they should be from the racers.
The racers get to spread out between them all. So instead of have 50-60 racers at on track you get 10-15 at 5 tracks now.
But if you gotta do something with the land....RC is a great place to start.
Just don't plan on becoming rich from it!
Words from the Famous Track owners "I have never met a track owner who is a millionaire" LOL

Okay. I hear what you are saying. Now here is my idea expanded. I would like to build multiple off-road tracks. An oval track. A dragstip for you dragster nuts. a couple of off-road tracks. Don't forget the Aircraft stuff. I figure instead of have one track and trying to make a go of that, I would like to use the whole property and cater to a bunch of R/C types. Now I understand that I have to work out a bunch of stuff to make this happen. But before I do anything, I would like to know if my idea will fly.

The Idea SOUNDS GREAT.... Heck if you don't have any other Ideas for the land, RC isn't bad!

The backyard bashers that live close to you will show up regularly. The serious racer might once or twice a year. That is unless you build a track equal to or better than The Farm II. Boat racers and plane flyers might show up, but you'd have to advertise to let them know where you are. Where are you specificly? There are almost too many r/c off roads tracks in NC now. More tracks than the racers can support. Just my opinions.

keep in mind how close you might be to Sandhills r/c and some of the tracks that might be just across the sc state line. racers don't mind driving for a good race facility if the competition is good though.
if you decide to do it, be sure to maintain the place very well, have good clean restrooms and plenty of parking. you will really need a stand out facility to get racers from some of the other tracks.
great idea having all in one place though!

i agree with reggie. we need more carpet/asphalt touring choices! aint but really ONE carpet track in NC, ( maybe, not really sure) and 2 or 3 asphalt tracks. the best two are both on the raleigh side of the state (and beyond). so guys from like hickory, crossnore, and charlotte have slim pickens.

if you could squeeze in a 1/8 scale / monster truck track, that would be awesome as well. Just maybe an on-site hobby shop so people wont have to drive about 35 miles to Fayetteville
I'm trying to get some relatives of mine to get into the hobby; im almost at the point of buying a E-Maxx or MGT/Savage for them!
oh yeah, and I'm sorry for not calling you. I still have to get used to this "calling at nighttime" thing (so dark after 6). If you need track layouts, im up for it.

We'll be reading on your progress. And yes...the county and TAXES are important, but you already know that. I happen to know someone who tried to set up an off-road racing "club" on his own land (last year, Wake County)...and found out he would be liable to pay entertainment taxes to the county. You're doing it the right way friend!

What is the location of this potential track? Banked Dirt oval would be great. I used to belong to a very successful club in NJ called Dirt Runners and they have a great oval with a pretty cool off road in the middle of it. Oooooh how about a tri-oval more room for a track in the center?? SOme sort of parts on-site would be great how about a parts shed. my 2 cents

somewhere In Wagram, NC I believe. Hopefully, its somewhere a bit more NE from there, it'll shave a couple minutes off my already short trip.
dirt ovals do sound pretty cool though. throw in some more stuff not offered at Sandhills, and weve got a winner!

I hate to advertise here, but this is the quickest way to talk to "locals". I am in dire need of a rear ball diff for an old HPI Pro elec TC. I think the Pro-2 rear diff would also fit. If anybody has one and is willing to sell/barter, would you please PM me? P.S. I'm also a member of TRRAC, so I'll will be at the track in Durham on Sunday.
I've also got (3) Losi XXXS's (including B. Melton's all-graphite pro car) plus about $400 in graphite and titanium parts...I'd like to trade for a Nitro TC! I'll also have those with me on Sunday. If you wanna see pix of the pro ride e-mail thumperdcs@msn.com and I'll send some (too big to upload here).
Take care,
Dave S.

You should go to Hayes Hobby and have them order it for you. I dont think they stock much HPI stuff, just Savages and Pro4's and probably spare parts in there.
not too many on-road guys around here that I know of.

Just reread the thread:
There really isnt that many tracks in NC; dont let that listing in the back of RCCA fool you. The ones that are operating are either in the tri-cities area, out in the mountains, or near the beaches. were basically right in the center of all of it. I feel a local track would be a good idea here.

That's for sure...I learned not to trust RCCA at all. Same bad data for my home state of Penna. when I traveled there last year.

And....a dirt oval...sounds really cool. Don't have anything to run on it right now (I'll wait to see what other folks are running) but I'd love to try a little sideways fun with my elec. rally car. An infield off-road course (thinking about the dirt tri-oval)...a good one where the 1/8 buggy guys can rip (like Rosewood in the "old days"). I'd drive the 2 hours or so from Raleigh for a good dirt facility!
I know Pete...you're gonna tell me to come down to Monkey Bottom.

One class that was always alot of fun at Dirt Runners was Powder Puff. It was were all the woman and kids raced and they would run whatever they wanted. Once they got good enough they would move up to novice stock. One class I loved to run was Heavy Metal Truck. This class was back in the day when RC 10 and Falcon conversions came out so they could be made into trucks, what fun I ran a Gropner boat motor in my truck and talk about some rpms.

Dave, there's already a dirt oval in Wilson, less than an hour from Raleigh that is first class, and they also have an offroad track.

Nextolast is right. Already have a real nice dirt oval right in this area and like already stated too many off-road tracks in the state, and in this area too.....there is Sandhills, Thunder-Alley in Wilson and ILP@Rosewood. Each one of those are wll within 1-2 hours of Raleigh. Add another and the turnouts at each will suffer. Just my 2 cents.

I stand corrected...sorry I got excited and cluttered up the board with not-so-intelligent ideas. I'll keep my mouth shut for a while until I become more educated in the area of dirt racing (I'm an asphalt guy when I run). And I'll definitely agree that too many of the same facilities hurts the track owners...not a good thing in a low margin business. I'll stay tuned and take notes!!!

Well guys I am so close to making a go at this. I am starting my first track this weekend, I will put in the fiirst off-road track simply because I run an RC10GT and I want somewhere to run my car right out of the gate. The dirt oval will be next. I have requested a quote on the 132' dragstrip and hope to hear back soon on that. Even though I cannot open the facility to the public until after I meet with the planning board and the board of commisioners, I plan to host "fun days" to help attract the locals. There are about 20 guys that I have met in the last 2 weeks that have not been going to established tracks just because they are to lazy to drive hours for it. These guys, which are only about 30 minutes from me will be the first ones to get involved in my racepark and they, since they don't drive now to established tracks, will not take any business from anyone. Actually, they will be the ones who go in search of other tracks after I show them how great an established track can be. Don't worry guys, there is plenty of fun to be had for all of us!

01-24-2006, 03:17 PM
Oh yeah guys, would ya'll be willing to throw track layout ideas to me? The smallest track I have drawn in Cad so far covers 130' x 75'. My largest so far is 160' x 130'. The dragstrip is drawn at 250' x 16' asphault. Concrete is possible, but asphault is better I know. I guess it all depends on construction costs. I also have plenty of room to put in a dirt dragstrip right next to it if demand is high enough. How big do you all want the dirt oval? I was thinking 100' x 50' Too big? Too small? Just right? let me know and I'll make it happen.
This weekend I am having 15 yards of dirt delivered to layout the first off-road track. I hope this will be enough. If not, I'll get more. I have to purchase 775' of 4" black drainage piping for the first track. I hope to have the dirt spread by next weekend and the pipe down by the next. Looks like I should be running on the off-road track in 3 weeks!

I know you can get a better idea about the drag strip from the guys at both RCDrags.com and IMDRA.com... I would even bet that if you build a strip the guys would love to hold events there such as a National or a Regional race... RC drag racing isn't that big so finding a purpose made track is few and far between...
SerpentKing101
01-26-2006, 02:58 PM
the dragstrip length was my suggestion; it is the total length, and not the measured one. that extra 120-something feet is to give those 70-100mph + rockets time to slow down. might even have to be longer.
Me personally would like to see maybe 2 indoor electric tracks (carpet and autocross-style dirt track) under the same roof, a nice outdoor track (smallish supercross style track), and a on-site LHS and a bar and grill of sorts.
Its what I'd do if my pockets were as deep and full as his.
carvinrocks1
01-26-2006, 03:53 PM
Now I surly wish my pockets were "Deep" and "Full" SerpentKing, but I do have a few bucks to throw at this. Engineering is nice to me, but I do have reality to consider. Thanks for the call the other night Serpent. Great to hear from you! I got my insurance quote yesterday. Nice! The portable potties may not fly. The County environmental folks may make me put in a proper toilet building. BUMMER! I was able to get a porta-potty for 50 bucks a month cleaned every Monday! They also told me I have to have a commercial kitchen to sell you guys food. Now I can sell the pre-packaged stuff with out a kitchen, but I wanted to offer hamburgers/hotdogs! Oh well.
I should get my dirt Saturday if everything goes well. I have the cash in hand, but not sure exactly what composition of dirt that I want to get. I need to decide that soon! Anyone got a bobcat they would like to "donate" to the cause for a day?

found out today that my local dragstrip (311 dragway) will no longer hold races due to the rent on the land being increased. The strip has to be no shorter then 200 feet... 311 was around that mark and had a net at the to catch run away cars, and they still found their way through it... :D :D I do say that building the dirt strip beside of it is a bad idea... there's nothing worse then dirt and VHT mixed together... NE ways I know these guys and gals will be more then happy for a new strip to be built in NC now that the pride of NC has been taken away...

just a couple of suggestions for the drag strip
each lane should be 10 wide. that is the standard for R/C drag racing
also the length should be atleast 300 ft......more would be nice.
311 R/C Dragway was located in Sophia NC

Off-Road- An over under would be cool along with some nice berms on the layout. Do a search for (track Layouts). Another idea would to go on other facilities sites and check out the pics of their tracks for ideas. Dirt...are you looking to do a loomy or blue grove surface? I personally like loomy.
Layout ideas- Have a contest with a prize for who evers track you pick???
Food- Why not get connected with a local that has a food service trailer and work out a deal? Or see if you could by a used one. Wait is your town nutz? Why can't you have a cart of some sorts like street venders use? My local Lowes has a guy selling hot dogs every weekend.
Bathrooms- Why couldn't you use porta- pots? They are used all over the place for public events. Maybe they will let you use them for a temporary period until you see if the success of the place will be worth it.

Carvin, head to Sandhills Raceway in Vass.. just north of southern Pines.... lots of of-raod races and on-road races there in the winter.... what this state needs is a nice big concrete oval..... and a dragway since 311 is no longer.. moving some where soon though.
We are also holding a R/C Drag Race at Rockingham Dragway on May 13th....

hey...about how close is it to Hoke County High School? I can get there from my house in about 15-20 minutes depending on how fast I feel like going (i live almost near the end of wayside road, the last stoplight before you go into cumberland)
all those extra expenses (permanent facilities, jobs) were essentially the reason why I made suggestions on all these other ways to earn money besides membership fees. I have a couple more potential ones, but I'm unsure if you want a rec center on your land or not (good income though i believe). But me personally would try to have as much stuff inside a building that is possible and feasible.
If you do roll with that though, I want a executive or manager's job. :D I called dibs.

Hey guys! Just giving an update. Saturday I got the area for the first track bush-hogged. Looking good! 175' x 70' rectangle. Should be a nice track I must say. Hopefully if it doesn't rain today, I'll get the same guy to come back and remove the first 6 inches of grass/weeds/dirt and give me a nice solid surface (after I pack it down) to build the off-road track. 401 sand is my next destination! Most likely will be next weekend. Oh well I was hoping for this weekend dropping the sand, but I guess I can wait another week to make sure it is done right.
Once I get the dirt removed, I'll have somewhere to play with my car and I'll be working out the lanes, bumps and hills. If anyone is interested in bringing their car to try it all out before I make them etched in stone, please feel free to put in your input at the site. Since I am calling this my "personal" track, the county cannot say anything to me about what I am doing now. It is for my own personal use. When the business opens, it becomes business track. I am taking photos along the building process so if you guys want, I'll post them here for you to comment on? I managed to also get up about 800' of 3 wire electric fence before it got dark last night. Got to keep nosey neighbors guessing!!!
Let me know. Oh yeah, I checked out Sandhills Raceway in Vass. VERY NICE!!! I am not interested in building an indoor facility at this time. I plan to do it in the future, but I just don't have a couple hundred thousand bucks laying around just waiting for something to be spent on!!!!!! Let me know if you want to come out. Email me your number and I'll call you with directions. carvinrocks1@yahoo.com

I am trying to get a couple of guys to come out to the property this weekend to throw out some ideas and drive their monster trucks around on the property. Maybe if you see the whole thing, you'll have some great ideas. I'd really like to know if these monster trucks can climb the hills I have. My RC10Gt can not handle the sand hills I have. Anyone interested?

NOw I haven't been out to race in many years due to distance, kids, .... but...here is my two cents. There are not too many offroad tracks in the area. Don't laugh. For all of those out there who want to run ELECTRIC, there is very little out there. Seems to me if you want to run 1/8 you could run every day, but no one has electric anymore. Off road is definately the way to start for cost reasons. No slab to pour concrete or asphalt. Dirt oval also sounds like a great idea to me. I'm dying to convert an old 2wd into an EDM, but again I'm into battery powered racing.. Just make sure you get a firm plan together using input from every source you can find.. Hech make up a flier and do some market research by leaving them at the LHS asking people to contact you. As for me if there can be come organized electri off road or dirt oval you may count me in (on occasion). By the way where are you located??
carvinrocks1
02-02-2006, 08:22 AM
LosiXXXman...... Thanks for your input! The racepark is located between Raeford and Wagram on 401. I am about 3 miles from Wagram on the Hoke county side of the Lumber River. As a matter of fact, the Lumber River feeds the pond where I want to have boat stuff. Not sure when the boats may come about, but that is what I want to do. The Dirt oval will be the second track I build. I am currently working on the off-road track. Very slow going, but I am moving forward with this endeavor. Send me an email and I'll give you a phone number to call and directions if you want to come out. Right now I do not want to post my phone number here since it is not a business phone number yet, just my home number.
I have received great input from all the guys in this forum. Again I thank all of you!!! I look forward to making some great friends in this business.

That's how I got started...thanks to my son! Now I'm torn...I can only buy one new vehicle this year...so...I have to chose between Nitro Touring Car...or Truck. I want to find out more about this dirt oval stuff. Being a NASCAR freak, round and round in the dirt sounds like a blast. Think I could convert a Tamiya TT-01 Rally Car :-)

Carvin--
Whoa. I just looked at where you are in relation to me. That is probably way too far for me to get involved. Best of luck with your tracks though. If I find myself in the vicinity I'll drop by.

How far is your facility from lumber Bridge, which is 12 mile from raeford and
8 miles from Red Springs? I raced at stoneypoint in hope mills and Rjs'out on cedar creek rd. in fayetteville before they closed. I think your facility is just what the area needs!

the proposed track was a few miles north of that motocross track (north of 401, around the end of gainey st. about where gainey and turnpike meet)
