I've been planning on buying a Nitro off-roader, and I've been reading up alot on the models. The ones that jump out at me are the Associated RC10GT, the Nitro Evader, the Nitro Rustler, Traxxas Nitro Sport, HPI Rush Revolution and HPI Nitro RS4 MT 2.

You can obviously see the price range I'm going for (sub $350). The biggest factor here is durability, user friendliness comes in at a close 2nd (I'm a beginner). I've read the reviews, but there's never anything mentioned about the overall durability of the truck itself, compared to the rest of the models in it's class. I'm planning to buy around springtime, so there's no rush. I'll mainly be bashing, not racing, so track performance isn't of concern.

I already have an RC18T with a Mamba 6800kv in it. I was originally going to dump a bunch of extra money into it, but I figured it would be nice to have 2 trucks to run so me and my girlfriend can race around.

Definitly the RC10GT. It's a tough ST. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of all hobby shops support these trucks also. The other trucks you mentioned are good trucks as well, but the GT is the original ST and I believe it's part of the reason this hobby has gotten as big as it is. I know more people that started with a GT than any other rc.

Fantastic. That's exactly the one I liked the most. I was going to go battery powered at first, but I like the long run-time potential of Nitro. It'd be nice to go out and bash around for over an hour. The funny thing is that once I throw 8 cells into my Mamba it'll probably keep up with the nitro. Amazing little bugger.

I have several rc18's. One of them has the Mamba competition X with a three cell Thunder Power lipo pack and it will dust my rc10GT. It's rediculous how fast it is.

Yeah, I can second the notion on the mamba powered RC18T. I had one that would outrun a MGT and a savage in a drag.....lol

Durablility was an issue with mine because it had an appetite for diffs.

I'm hoping my RC18T won't eat up diffs too much. It would be nice if they made some diffs that are alloy instead of plastic.

They make them out of plastic so when something does break, it's cheaper to fix. The problem is many owners mis-adjust the diffs and slipper clutch and abuse them (without knowing it,) this is what burns them up. You can get metal gears for the AE diffs (don't know about the 18T tho) but if you do that you usually wind up breaking something more expensive.

Yeah, I knew how to correctly adjust the differentials on these trucks, but it still didn't give good service trying to stand up to these brushless motors....

Not that I'm complaining though. It was only a $4 gear set when it did go....

How often did they go? Once I put 8+ cells in it I'm not going to eat up a diff every other run am I?

falcon68
01-19-2006, 07:13 PM
I was averaging roughly 30 mins of runtime from a diff

That's rediculous! Did you have a Comp-x or a 6800?

falcon68

The comp x (8000kv if memory serves me correctly)

I have the comp X in mine and I only stripped out one set of gears. I just ease up on the throttle instead of punching it. I also set my diffs a tiny bit loose to absorb most of the load.

I kept mine diffs set up with only a minimal amount of preload, the biggest problem was at full charge an the battery. I had the stock radio system on it so it wasn't the most linear setup. most of the time I'd strip a diff on take off

only one car comes to mind for statium trucks, the XXXNT Sport 2 RTR. unbeatible car, RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! its loaded with hop ups, and its like $320-350. it comes strait out of the boxs with a Dynamite Mach .15 engine, hi torq metal geard ball bearing steering servo, a JR XR2i radio (one of the BEST EVER!) a big air filter, and its just an awsome car! it kicks butt and you dont even have to buy aftermarket parts for it!

I'm still up in the air about what I'm gonna go with, but if I go 2wd this is definately going to be the kit I buy. It looks like one HELL of a truck for the money.

I started out with a TL01 a few months ago and then went with a RC18T with the mamba 6800, so I'm used to the 4wd handling. Do you think it's going to be difficult for me to control the 2wd nitro's?

i dont really know about being more difficult driving but i do no my 4wd nitros handle better than my electric 2wds have you considered a 1/8 scale mine is sweet he is were i got mine http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLTL4&P=0 tough as a rock took it of a 6ft jump and kept on going there is also this version with electric start http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAXV1&P=0 have fun when you choose. Holy crap the motor that comes with that is huge! I'm more into stadium trucks than anything else, but that looks like an awesome value. The power of it alone is enough to make me buy it. I have to say I don't think any other suggestion will beat this one. I'm gonna have to go with this ofna for sure.

RC10GT is easily the toughest truck, but a very close second is the JATO.

Dang I forgot to even ask. Next to the RC10GT and the Jato, how does the Ofna buggy compare durability wise?

Edit: I just saw a video of a dude jumping his house with a buggy and the only thing that happened was the body snapped off. I think that speaks for itself as far as durability goes. It looked like an Ofna.

those 4WD nitro powered buggies are 1/8th scale, so everything is made bigger and stronger. i raced my XXXNT at the CRCRC 11th Annual Gas National Championships and i felt like i was racing a glass truck because i am so used to 1/8th scale. the big race was 3 days, practice-qualifyers-mains and after the whole weekend, i had a 2 broken rear caster blocks, broken shock tower, and a sheered ball link. i have been racing my 1/8th scaler all summer and broke NOTHING! thats why (to me) the statium trucks feel MUCH more fragile to me. at the race, i compaired my rear hub on my XXXNT to my buddies rear hub for his Hot Bodies Lightning Statium Pro (unlimited monster truck) and his is atleast 3x bigger. its a giant next to mine.

I have the TNX and it is extreeeemly easy to use. Follow the DVD included and it is idiot proof (take it from a nube) The brake in is a bit teadious. I have let the thing sit with after oil in it for over 4 mo with out turning it over and today I want to the local track and bam up and running with out an adjustment. Easy to start and RTR. This is one tough truck. Tamya is winning alot of races with it as well.
Just a perspective from some one that has little experiance with RC stuff.

The Most Durable Nitro Offroad Vehicle Built Is By Far The Kyosho Usa-1! This Is The Monster Truck That Started It All. Anyone Who Has Had The Pleasure Of Owning One Of These Will Say The Same! Same Design For Years And That Should Tell You A Lot About The Truck. I've Owned Many Different Offroads From 1/10 To 1/6 Scale And My Usa-1 Has Never Had A Chassis Part Replaced. I've Clipped Trees, Landed Upside Down, Slammed Head On Into Curbs, Landed Head First And Have Never Broke A Bumper. It's Hard To Believe, But True. I Still Have A New Spare Usa-1 That I Had Baught For Spare Parts. Chassis Is Still In Tact. But The Body Has Long Since Be Thrashed! Still Run The Beast And Going Of It's 6th Body Lol!!! Body Mounts Is Another Part That I've Replaced. In 10 Years, I've Replaced The Body, Gears, Shocks, Body Mounts, Tires And Engine. This Is The 1/8 Scale Nitro Truck That Started It All. Everyone Including The All Mighty Selling Tmaxx Has Based It All Off The Usa-1. My Opinion And I'm Sticking To It! ;0)

Id have to vote for the NMT2. Ive been driving the Original NMT and the NMT2 for almost 5 years now and have never broken anything except for some stripped gears and ball studs cracking. Nothing big at all.

xilix , If you are thinking of racing , the Jato altho fast is not the most nimble on the track.. Also it comes with a .15 which by all accounts is illegal to run where rules stat .12 motor limit for staduim trucks.. but agian it all good.. The RC10GT is one tough truck..
