Best Paint Competition – February 2006
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of February and will close at Midnight (EST) on Tuesday, February 28, 2006.
Restrictions: None. This is an open paint contest.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Piggy89373 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
1stGenCRXer and CharlieB will judge this month’s Amateur and Pro Classes (respectively).
Next months Best Paint Competition will have a 2 Paint restriction.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Thanks... The SKULL lettering was found on the net, I put it in photoshop and cleaned it up a bit, printed it out and XXX Main glued it to the inside. The Skull face was taken off Scotty Cannons actual real Skull Gear car, and again I put it in photoshop and edited it off the car, and spent a lot of time touching that up, and printed it out, and XXX Main glued it in. The streaks coming out of the stacks is paint.
Thanks again for the compliment.

For those of you who have not used Spaz Stix, all I can want to say is that you are missing out. Their colors are deep and sweet; they make faskolor look dull. If you've ever bought a new car or motorcylce and like that wet look then Spaz Stix paints are for you.

use an online photo hosting service (photbucket, yahoo, etc.)
Then, in that software there, will be a way to generate the appropriate HTML to enter in the forums so we can see them. The attachment capability of this site is a joke. You essentially have to use thumbnails for everything based on the size limit they give you.

I normally don't comment on the superb paintjobs I've seen here because I'm not worthy (single colour with paint bleeds/ rattle can painter that I am) but WOW!!! RESP and AirBoss.... Love the 914!!! Is that an old M02? The front end looks too low for anything other a monoshock Tamiya.... You also need some "leather" to cover the roof to go with the "lace" :D

Resp, some of you best looking work to date!! The Revo looks great. I agree with Adrc, put 'em outside for better pics and truer color. The Mini looks great, but the black is just a touch heavy.
Air, the lace looks great. Although, the Stevie Nicks portrait had images of South Park running through my head. Great work!!

There are a couple entries that might be in the amatuer category, but I didn't see any class designation.
Not to take Piggy's job, but if I don't know, I won't judge it.
As usual, some real nice bodies being posted, I look forward to the point tallies.

Simply WOW. If those had been airbrushed graphics, I would have bumped you straight to the pro ranks myself. As it is, pasted graphics or not, that body is cool, clean, and looks ready to run 300mph.

Nothing like toxic waste. I like the shadow on the drips, and the contrast between the main body and the green really grabs your attention.

There's something missing on this body, but I can't put my finger on it. I like the overall design though.

Good overall design, a little paint bleed, and the shape of the blue graphic on the hood seems a little out of place.

Better pictures would have helped, but I know it's quite challenging to paint the 1/18th bodies. The overall design is simple, but that can be just as attractive as an elaborate body.

This body makes me think "sleeper", looks like a pro job. There's enough variations of color in each of the graphic elements that even though there are tons of them, it doesn't look cluttered, and I don't get tired of looking at it.
Vato Loco
Emaxx H2

Not an incredibly difficult or hard to plan paint job, but it is nice to finally see an H2 that doesn't look like a gravel road would be too much terrain for it to handle. ;)

I would again have liked to see the final trimmed product, but I can appreciate the effort that went into the masks for the FOX logo, and your fade looks pretty good, though I'm not sure if you intended on having a jagged fade line across the trunk. The jagged fade line in the wheel well area won't matter once trimmed.

F650
Design- 9
Execution- 8
Difficulty- 8

If you were going for shiney, mission accomplished. Some minor things: if you wanted the front fenders black, I would suggest masking the front flames a little different. As it is, it kind of looks like you just didn't want to pick up the xacto to trim the tape on the RF fender. The wavy lines on the doors are a good touch, it would get pretty easy to go too blocky on the F650 body.
So that means we have:

Also, agreed about the second entry for Jato9.
Jato9, since your second entry wasn't judged, you can put it up for next month's competition. Or, we can ask 1stGen nicely and have it judged. It's your call. I'd recommend putting it in next month's competition.
Lastly, a big thank you to 1stGenCRXer for judging this competition. As always, we've asked him to judge and as such, if there are discrepancies, please PM me. Congratulations to Clintscreations, and congrats to all who entered. Regardless of where you placed in the competition, take pride in the fact that it was a tough contest. Everyone posted an exemplary example of painting skill.

Dang, sorry Jato9, didn't mean to leave anything out, I don't know how I missed that great buggy body. I can judge it if you want, but I'm with piggy, I'd suggest you hold that beauty over ;)
And crypt, yeah man, sorry, you're 3rd by points, sorry sumodidit I judged each body one at a time and then went back and looked for the highest three scores, looks like I missed one. I tried to do each body individually and without bias, which is why [for the most part] the scores were pretty tight.
Judging was fun, but I'm not so sure I want to win another month's competition. For one, I'm no pro, and for two, it's HAAAARD to pick apart someone else's work and rank them.
clint, you coulda fooled me on being a pro, but have fun judging next month's paint comp.

Clint, you judge the amateur class on your own. Read through the rules and take careful note of the guidelines for the judge. It'll spell out how to judge. You can also use this (February's) contest as a guide. When the deadline ends and the contest closes, post up your results within 5 days. It's just that easy (although judging here is never easy.) Of course, if you're having difficulty with the format or whether or not entries have submitted the required information, you can PM me with your concerns and I'll help out anyway I can.
