Joel, that picture rocks! This is my first post so I wanted to say hi to everyone and ask a few questions. I'm a student in Miami and couldn't afford $1000 all at once, so have been slowly putting together a 1/8 Miss Bud from parts. It worked out OK though, as I've learned a lot about mods, hop-ups, and design issues. Right now, I think I've got everything except motor mounts and am trying to figure out which prop to use. What is the difference between a 2/3/4 blade prop? The guy who sold me the Redline G26 off Ebay said to use a 1667 or a 6717. Any advice? Also, I'm trying to figure out what exhaust to go with (e.g. wet vs. dry, brand, etc.) and whether or not to use the clutch, water pump, or other primary differences between the Bud and Llumar/Elam. Thanks for all the help, I've already learned a ton from these rooms.
Best Regards,
Mark

Stick with a two blade prop for the time being. After you get the boat runnig good, then you can play with the 3 blade props. Clutches, water pumps and wet exhausts, forget all of them. A clutch costs you power at the prop meaning less speed, a water pump adds weight meaning less speed, while the wet exhaust can cover up cooling system problems. If you want your boat to fly like Joel's does in the pictures, you need to get as much weight off the prop as you can. Balance your boat on somthing at the sponson transoms and rest the strut on a scale. If the scale reads more than 1.75 pounds, you need to lighten up the rear of the boat. Otherwise, you will be dragging the stern along the water which will cost you speed as well as make a blow-over more likely

Thanks Hydro Junkie, :) I have a Prather S270 2 blade and a Octura 6717 3 blade now. I balanced the S270 myself with the opposing magnet balancer. It took about an hour but I was methodical so I didn't screw up my first too bad. I got the Octura balanced from some guy on Ebay, but that was mainly because I didn't think I'd get a response so quickly, so I employed the first rule of government spending--why have one when you can have two at twice the price? :D I took all your advice though, except I haven't weighed it yet, because I'm still waiting on parts. My biggest problem is I don't want to cut up the canopy.:o Can you get this thing to run remotely right with the engine in stock location? I have a feeling I'm going to just get a replacement canopy and hack one up anyway because Joel's pic is way too cool and function at the end of the day outweighs form. Plus my buddy Anthony has one too, and between the two of us, we won't stop until they're both in orbit! I have a B.H. Hanson pipe for it now, but waiting on a header (starting with stock). What advice do you have about throttle cables? I have the aftermarket carb, and it didn't come with the throttle cable mounting plate. Someone said something about solid? Anyway, thats enough for now, I'll keep you posted and take a pic of the fleet ASAP.

It can be done without moving the engine, but plan on a lot of work whether you move the engine or not. If you leave the engine in the stock location, you will have to move the radio box forward into the cockpit. I would also move the fuel tank to the right side, under the deck, either along side the engine or just in front of it. If you do that, trash the flip top tank and get something along the lines of a Sullivan seamless with a gas conversion kit. That's where I would start, but since it's YOUR BOAT, what mods you do are up to you. I have a few other ideas for later:)

Thanks again hydro junkie. How do you connect the rudder from way up there? What about tachometers and speedometers? Do you want WOT to be at peak RPM or RPM at peak hp? What is the peak RPM anyway? I asked the guy who sold me the "Redline G26" off Ebay, and he said 18,500? I thought it was more in the 9000 range. What do you do for flotation. I saw Joel had some yellow inflatable thing, what about foam? Any tips on strengthening the deck seam or other weak areas of fiberglass? What about this Australian company that builds a 1/8 hyrdo even bigger than Proboat for half the price? Perhaps it is better balanced? Sorry for all the questions, I hope I'm not abusing your RC wisdom. :o

NO, you're not being abusive. What many of my hydro racing friends do is use an arrow shaft(like as in archery)and fasten 4-40 threaded rods to the ends. There is a fitting that they use, but I don't know who makes it. I usually set my boats up so that WOT is WOT. A non-modified G26 tops out around 16K, though the 18.5 is possible. As far as a speedo, a Garmin Gecko works well, though I can't say on the tach. Stay away from expanding foam for floatation. Any solid foam, pool noodles or even ping pong balls will work as floatation. Don't know anything about the Aussie boat, sorry. Hope this helps

Are you able to post movies to this site? You guys would love this. My buddy and I taped a camera to Miss Bud and got some awesome footage. We're going to get some more as soon as I make more of the mods you all mentioned. So far I have lowered the strut an 1/8th of an inch. I also adjusted the wing to 10 degrees like on Joel's boat. I decided I'm not ready to cut the cowl yet, so the engine will stay put for now. I'm thinking about moving the fuel tank to two smaller ones in the front of the sponsons. I also moved the battery pack up front. I'm using those thrust ball bearings on the strut shaft, I figured may be good for some R's. I sharpened the rudder, turn fin, and strut to cut through the water better. I'm going to try some different props at some point and run Miss Bud alongside a chase boat with a speedo to test them. In an earlier post, Hydro Junkie talked about getting the boat weight at the strut to 1 3/4 pounds, and I weighed her last night--9 pounds 6 ounces! I guess I still have a way to go. I have some carbon fiber that I intended to install to beef her up, but I'm hesitant to install it since I'm trying to dump weight, and I don't know at what locations it would be most helpful. I ordered some of those zero drag seals that supposedly buy 300-500 RPMs, but have to figure out how to install them. Autobailers are awesome, I don't know why they don't come with them.

Here's a look at our Bud's. My buddy's is a nitro, but he has big gas and little nitro too. :D

Now you didn't say you had a T-4 hull. That's a totally different animal than the one Joel has. I'm wondering how you got a 9+ pound weight on the prop? Was the boat balanced on the sponson transoms or further forward?

That's my buddy's T-4, mine is the ProBoat. I don't think I weighed from the rear of the sponsons, so will try again. Check this out though, here's the video I promised of a my buddy's ProBoat 1/12th. We rigged up a CVS cam, and as you can see the video came out really well.
