Best Paint Competition – March 2006
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of February and will close at Midnight (EST) on Friday, 31 March, 2006.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
Restrictions: Two Colors only.
Any two colors can be used, but must be the only colors to contact lexan. Any colors may be used to back those colors. For example: the two colors chosen are yellow and orange; backing colors for yellow is blue and white (to produce green and yellow) while the backing colors for orange are red, blue, and silver (to produce a reddish orange, a dark brown, and a bright orange).
This is an exercise in color design. With a little thought, it’s possible to run the entire color spectrum.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: 2 Colors Only.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Piggy89373 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
ClintsCreations and WheelNut will judge this month’s Amateur and Pro Classes (respectively).
Next months Best Paint Competition will be an open contest.
This month, entries must meet the 2 color restrictions to qualify for judging. Entries that do not meet the restrictions will be asked to resubmit in next month's competition.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

As I've mentioned before, my painting resembles a 3yr old's wall scribbles. :o I thought I might stand a chance of at least coming in 85th or so in a 2 color comp, but I'm cornfused-is the idea here to mix 2 colors and paint the body with the result, or are we talking just a simple 2 color scheme?

hey ive got this awsome white flames with a white main color backed with white .............oh wait im a judge..........LOL

03-13-2006, 08:22 AM
The idea is to have a maximum of 2 colors in contact with the lexan. You can use any color you like to back with. Essentially, this leaves you with unlimited amount of colors to use. Here's an example where only one color is in contact with lexan. Keep in mind there's plenty of colors backing that one color.
http://www.cfxpaintworks.com/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/10017/DSC01450.JPG
If you want to do a simple two color scheme, then go for it. However, the sky is the limit on what you can do. This is an exercise in creativity. There's more you can do with a color then just back it in white or silver. ;)

Wrobcio, is the flo red backing the yellow to produce the orange or are they 2 completely different areas?
Wrobcio

They are totally different, so you won't get an orange from it.
tomorrow i'll give you some pictures taken in the daylight

'nother example NOT TO BE JUDGED
AutoAir Chamelion Gold on lower half and Chamelion Blue on upper half backed with Pearl copper backed with Pearl Gold. Only the two Chamelion colors are touching the lexan.

From my Understanding then you have 3 colors touching the lexan? You can only use 2 for this comp :(
It's tough, but it can be done! I'll have to try to get something done for this one :D

LMAO...dropping the true fire bombshell was designed to keep people thinking about what can be done if you think beyond simple 2 color designs. Extremepaint's true fire was just the perfect example to use to think outside the box.
AirB, thanks for the additional example.
Wrobcio, sorry bud. But you entry doesn't meet the restrictions. You have 3 colors in contact with the lexan. As a hint, if you had done half the body in black and the other half in a thinned yellow, you would have been able to section off the yellow and back an area in flo red for a bright orange-ish color. Sorry man, but please enter it into next month's competition.

You misunderstand, What I am asking is for you to tell us what colors and techniques you used. all i am suggesting is that it is an interesting effect and that we would all benefit from the information. I have no idea what you are infering from the post, but it was not intended to be inflammatory at all.
Piggy89373
03-14-2006, 09:22 PM
Rev, sorry for the misunderstanding. That's the problem with the written word, it's hard to infer proper inflection. My apologies for misunderstanding you. No harm, no foul. The real fire body posted was not mine. You can find out how to do that by looking at this thread: http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=215649
Extreme basically covered the entire body with a candy yellow. The highlights and actual flames are done using backing colors. There's so much more than can be done using backing colors to achieve your graphics. Think beyond the surface color and challenge yourself.

interesting, so is my fire body actually legal for the contest? b/c it has 5 colors, but only the candy yellow and black touch the body, so essentially i could lay down a candy then back that with anything i wanted and in effect create a monotone scheme, right? so you have an unlimited choice for backers? just a minimum of 2 colors have to actually be "touching" the body, if the paint is touching its self then its ok, right? theres a whole lotta touching going on around here, hope no one gets sued for sexual harasment

I have an airbrush that continually clogs up when I use Pactra Paint in the mixture described. I have thinned it with much the same problem.
Now I would be most grateful if someone could assist in recommending me any other paints on the market.
I read that Faskolour is water based - can it be thinned down with water?
Are there any other paints out there?
In addition to this what paint do you use to get that chrome effect - Pactra only seem to have silver.
I keep quoting Pactra as it is the most widely available in the UK.

u can also try createx which is basically the same thing as faskolor.u can get createx at most arts n crafts stores.i usually dilute faskolor with windex or u can use rubbing alchoal.
Loheswaran
03-23-2006, 04:53 AM
I had a look at Createx paints, and the funny thing is that they actually cost more in the UK than Faskolour paint - Minimum £6.35 - whereas Faskolor is £4.35.
As to the Windex - is it any particular type of windex that is used?
Finally I wanted to know in what parts you mix the paint - 50 50, or just simply to a consistency one would be happy to put through an airbrush without it spitting.
Finally can Windex be used to clean out the airbrush?
By the way thankyou very much for responding to me.

I did this the last couple of days. I really liked the Idea of this contest, Im supprised there has not been more entries. Here we have a Pro Line CP 2.0 for the MBX 5. Masked with diviely Liquid masking. Cut with a hobbico short hobby knife. First color sprayed was the Createx metallic midnight blue. Flame mask was removed and the entire flame was sprayed createx lemon yellow. After it dried the yellow flame edges and tips were backed with createx flour. hot pink to make this mellow orange color. It was then completly backed with brite white and createx clear(not gloss) coat.

Thank you to all who stepped up to the plate and gave this contest a try. Although I was hoping for more of a turnout, it was still fun to watch those who did enter. Thank you again, and best of luck to all who entered.

Well that nd the graphics are painted as well... I see 6 colors on there... :(
Same as Divman - nice to see you back and the body looks good! But I'm thinking since it was done with cans it has 3 colors on it? And did you actually use scotch tape (the clear stuff) for that or was it scotch brand masking tape?

Agreed, please disregard GoofyTexan's scoring since he paints professionally. Thanks for taking the time to judge.
DaveG, congrats on a well deserved win.
Pedeman, thanks for stepping forward to paint something for this contest.
Goofy and everyone else, this is a prime example of why it is necessary to include all information as per the rules of the contest.

Pro class
3rd
Ajsilva
Design-7
Execution-8
Difficulty-5
Total- 20
The blue on blue on white looks nice, the deisgn is a very generic flame design though, and the fade to the slames on the roof just doesn't sit right with me.
2nd
1st place race
Design-7
Execution-8.5
Difficulty-5

Very similar to Ajsilva's body, but with better colours, the flames are pretty awkward in a few places though.

Deisgn- 7.5
Execution- 8.5

Good design, it looks fast sitting still, which is what makes it stand out. The fading is ok, but it works well enough.
First off I'd like to say thanks to those who did decide to sacrifice a body to enter this contest. Overall a pretty sad number of entries, but then again thats kind of what I expected. If you ask me restricted contest just don't work, people want to paint however they like, and placing a huge retriction like 2 colours touching the body will generally make for a fairly plain looking body. Mabye if this was a 4 colour or even a 3 colour contest we could have gotten alot more entries. Needless to say that after finally winning a painting competition on here, and getting to judge I get stuck with the 3 entry competition, is pretty disappointing.

Umm... It does not really matter to me, but Billy's body did not meet the "two colors touching lexan" rule. And Goofy Texan should have been included.
FESTER2004
04-05-2006, 12:33 AM
yeah goofy texan should have been included!
Alot of people are dissapointed in the turn out in this months contest but then again thats what makes it a contest,to make it different. So Piggy does deserve a E for effort.maybe the site will do another 2 color contest ,maybe not.....but different themes/ideas gives each contest its own unique feature,to keep it fresh!
if anybody has any contest ideas please do post them in the thread marked "2006 paint schedule",any info.ideas helps!
I think this contest was a great idea. Piggy completely opened the door (and showed the way thru) when he made the stipulation of only two colors touching the body. There is a LOT that can be done with that....it just seems that people see the 2-colors as a crutch and believe it to be a noob comp.
Here is one I did that falls in the rules w/ the exception of the logo and front end work (which could easily be replaced by decals)

Thanks for those that entered, your "sacrifice of a body" is appreciated.
WheelNut, thanks for judging. I'm sorry you felt this way about this particular contest. I could go into a long dissertation about how the amount of colors were limitless if people applied themselves, but I'll refrain. Still, thanks for judging the three pros who posted up their required information.
GoofyTexan, please post up this month's entry into June's contest (with all the required information). You deserve feedback on your work.
Lidz, thanks for the backup and posting some great examples of thinking beyond masking tape and backing with white.
Once again, for those who entered, thank you. For those who thought this contest was a let down, disappointing, or lame, it's a shame you didn't bother to fire up at least two brain cells. I was hoping for some great paint jobs and possibly a mural or two or even some free hand stuff. Those that stepped up to the plate showed what can be done if a little effort is applied, it's a shame many others didn't see otherwise.
Next month's competition will be a detailed body contest. DaveG and BillyW will judge the amateur and professional class (respectively).

hehe no probs, as I say its my bad with the 3 colors :)
Ive never tried the clear scotch tape, or indeed electrical tape, since im only a rattle can user, i thot maybe the solvents or or something in them might react with the electrical stuff? But if its been done and worked i'll bear it in mind :) , although i have som Bob Divleys LM at the ready for my next body :D

Actually I used cans when I used electrical tape too... worked fine and the fact that it's vinyl tape let it co around curves very good! Just don't get the cheapest tape you can fine.. good quality stuff is what will get good results...
On that same note though I did just buy some Scotch 471 Plastic tape! Seems to work great, especially since I needed a 3/4" wide stripe for the last body I did :D
