No seriously I did. I saw a guy about to heave this into the dumpster and I tackled him like a line-backer. He said it had been in his closet for years and he had no use for it.

I have been racing electric and nitro RC for 15 years but have no boat experience so please help me out. I would love to restore this unless it's a total POS. The previous owner said he used a .45 OS airplane motor but it over heated. (That seems like a no-brainer) What can I use for an engine? I was looking at the OS .21RG and the Dynamite .32. Are those large enough for this boat?

Boat dimensions are:
length= 32"
width= 10.5"
depth at deapest part of hull= 6"

Any info would be appreciated.

Looks like it might be an old Dumas DEEP VEE 40 (http://www.dumasestore.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=47_58&products_id=425), rated for a .40 nitro.

I can see why it overheated as well. An aircraft engine is air cooled, so with the engine set as deep in the hull as it looks like it is, no air flow made it to the cooling fins. I would throw in a marine .40/.45 with a water cooled head and see what happens:)

There was a time,when we used air craft motors,and a cool clamp by octura

Do you guys have any suggestions on where I can buy marine motors? I searched Towerhobbies and didn't find very much. I have owned plenty of .12-.21 motors but never any larger than that.

Thanks for your help.

Well, it's a fixer-upper for sure but not really in that bad of shape. You'll probably have to get the original Dumas motor mount or fabricate one yourself which is easy to make.
For sport running you can pick up a cheap K&B .45 to put in there or some other eBay bargain engine that's in good shape.
You might want to update the running hardware but at the least, turn the rudder around as it's backwards!
I can tell who's old in here if they can remember Octura Kool-Klamps! :)

ron...they're still selling cool clamps at one of the LHS's in my area! talk about old school. those things were outdated ten years ago when i got into this habit..er...hobby. of course, the same LHS is selling 15-20 year old hulls at the original asking price of $250+. if anyone is interested in antiques, i may be able to hook you up.

There are a lot of things 'wrong' with that particular boat, but all can be fixed! The worst I see is the unsupported flex cable - no brass, just teflon! The prop angle is all wrong, the water pickup (who said the motor wasn't water-cooled?) is way too deep, etc. A little TLC and you'd have a nice sport boat.

An Aquacraft .46 from Tower would be a great choice for a motor, as would a K&B .40 Marine. Do not get a smaller displacement engine - this is a draggy hull which needs a big prop to get moving. Do not get a race engine for this hull either, as the Dumas DeepVees were not very competitive when they were new in the 70s, and today's high power is wasted. But they do make good sport boats if set up right - as the previous owner failed to do. I ran a DV20 for years, it was dependable and fun.

Fluid,

That was great input thanks a lot!! I guess I need to do a little research and see how the hardware needs to be set up for this boat. I think I saw hardware sets for sale on the Dumas website. I found some crazy mills for sale for around $350 but I'll get a mild motor like you said and just have some fun.

A little tip. Avoid the Dumas hardware if you can as it really isn't too good. Stuff from Octura will cost you more but is worth it. Normally I'd advise higher-dollar parts but you probably want to keep this boat on a budget.
These boats aren't really that bad. When I was working at the 2003 IMPBA Internat's, one of the past presidents had brought an old DV-60 to the race. I started snickering to myself when I saw it but for the conditions that day it ran quite well as it was a survivors race with nasty water conditions.

Would it be worth it to buy a K&B .45 over a .40? It's twice the rated power but at an added cost of $100.00.

The Aquacraft motor looks more like an airplane motor than a boat motor. It has an airplane style exhaust and no watercooled head. I do like the $99.00 price tag though.

So far the only place I have found K&B for sale is on this website.

I went back and reread what you typed earlier. If you are on a budget, the Dynamite or OS .32's would work in a pinch as we have to keep in mind that at the time when that hull first came out, the .40's and .45's weren't pushing out very much in the way of HP and RPM. If you do it right, you may only get about 35 MPH max out of it using one of those engines.
With a 32" hull, either of those should push it along or a good .21 .

I would not recommend the K&B .45 for a beginning boater. Not only is it much heavier than the .40, but it is a cranky racing motor which will use more fuel, make more noise, require a costly tuned pipe, eat plugs and drive the boat too fast for its design. (whew!)

The .40 will be a much better sport engine in every way, and I believe that the Dynamite .32 may be a good choice too (prop choice will be critical here). This big heavy boat with its high drag profile needs a larger prop than modern boats, and I don't know if the .32 would spin a big enough one - it might do fine. The big torquey K&B .40 definately will.

Cool thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward the dynamite motor because I like the pull start feature. (Although I use to have a dynamite .15 in my RC10GT and the pullstart always broke) I don't have a starter so I would have to buy one for the K&B .40. Do you have any recomendations for websites where I can buy K&B stuff?

I may have to bug you guys later on prop info if I go with the Dynamite motor.
