PRO PILOT FACE-OFF
This year’s RCX hosted a new and different kind of event called the Pro Pilot Face-Off. This new type of race offered pilots a challenging obstacle course that not only had to be performed correctly but also had to be completed with the fastest time. This winner-take-all race awarded a $500 prize each day to the pilot who completed the course with the fastest time.
Each heat featured two pilots racing side-by-side on identical courses. Each pilot had his own starting gate that he needed to fly his plane through knife-edge (this proved to be the toughest part of the course), then he shared low and high limbo bars, flying below and above respectively. At the end of the course, each pilot had to fly around his respective pylons and repeat the obstacles in the opposite direction until his plane flew knife-edge through the starting gate to stop the time.
Saturday’s race started at 2:00 pm and featured 10 pilots running the gauntlet of obstacles. Up until the last heat, Rick Mattie of Airtronics had the fastest time, and then Josh Glavin of Castle Creations and Jason Noll of Hobbico went head to head in a heat with both of them running the fastest time. A sudden death heat was flown to determine the winner and by only 2/10 of a second, Jason Noll emerged victorious.
Sunday’s race only had 7 competitors because of attrition from the day before. The pilots were willing to try and run two rounds, which was accomplished with a great deal of repair work going on inside the pit area (thanks to foam-safe CA!) between heats. In the end Jason Noll again flew running the fastest round of the day (in only one heat) and claimed the second day’s $500 prize. Congratulations to Jason and all of the brave and skilled pilots who flew in the RCX Pro Pilot Face-Off!
