Best Paint Competition – June 2006

Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of February and will close at Midnight (EST) on Friday, June 30, 2006.

Restrictions: None. This is an open paint contest.

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.

Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.

If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Piggy89373 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

Buggyracer28 and Mes will judge this month’s Amateur and Pro Classes (respectively).

Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition.

Next months Best Paint Competition will be the Patriots Contest.

Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Look for a 200mm Nemesis, CP 2.0 [Revo], and a Lola T530 from me this month :D

Edit: got it! Thanks

06-08-2006, 08:14 AM
That rule has been in effect for quite some time. I may change that to read: Any body submitted may not appear in another RCZ competition. Until the mods decide to actually look at this forum, we don't have much choice but to follow the letter of the rules from the past few years.

designt1
06-08-2006, 08:17 AM
I always thought it was for not entering a body that was entered before HERE @ RCZ! Example, I enter the same body in May and June if they are both open competitions!

FESTER2004
06-08-2006, 02:08 PM
but can the body be entered in another online contest?

Piggy89373
06-08-2006, 02:13 PM
The heck with it, that restriction will only pertain to RCZ competitions, not competitions on other sites. Someday, mods may visit the boards and I might convince them to change it, but I won't hold my breath.

designt1
06-08-2006, 04:40 PM
so are you saying I can relist my entry, or no? confused...LOL

Piggy89373
06-08-2006, 08:40 PM
As long as it didn't appear in any other competition on this website, you can relist it (and meets all the other restrictions such as it was painted within the past 6 months).

Alright, here's my first ever Airbrushed body.

Body: Crowd Pleazer 2.0 Revo
Paints: Pactra Metalic Red, Metalic Black, True Blue Pearl, Daytona Yellow, and Sprint White
Mask: Spaz Stix, mix between Gluttony and Greed
Airbrush: Paasche VL ST Pro
class: Amateur

http://linus.highpoint.edu/~hleach/RCBodies/Airbrush/FirstABbody/RevoL.JPG
http://linus.highpoint.edu/~hleach/RCBodies/Airbrush/FirstABbody/RevoR.JPG
http://linus.highpoint.edu/~hleach/RCBodies/Airbrush/FirstABbody/RevoF.JPG

I was going for a Marble effect on the main body color, but airbrush paint dries quicker than I was anticipating, so it didn't quite turn out as I wanted, but everything else went pretty well. The extent of my practice before this body was using a piece of scrap Lexan to dial in my pressures, that was it.

1st- thats amazing.awesome for your first a/b'd body!
Thanks man, you're not doing too bad with that single action either.

You'll like that VL when you get it up and running. I went with a double action because single action would have been too similar to a can for me, and I think I've already reached my creative limits with cans.

I have all this week and next off from work, so this isn't the only body I'll be posting up, hopefully I'll learn this brush a little better, learn my thinning ratios a little better, and the next couple I post up will be even better :D

Alright, here's my final entry for the month, go back to work Sunday, so it'll be another month-long drought for me.

Class: Amateur
Body: Protoform Nemesis 200mm
Chassis: Ofna CD3 Pro
Paint: Pactra Silver Metal Flake, Metallic Blue, Metallic Black, Sprint White, Flourescent Orange.
Masking: XXX main medium drip

I should have used some liquid mask on this body, but instead of going out to get a brush to apply it, I botched the body instead :p

Sorry for the low light, it's been raining a lot, so this was the closest I could get to sunlight pictures.

And let me just add, the Amatuer class is lookin' good this month!

I thought I'd at least have a chance, but that thought has faded, way to make it hard on the judges guys, some of the bodies submitted this month make it very hard to distinguish between the classes.

Very nice paint laid down all around, most of these bodies I could look at all day. :)

Well gang, here are the results for the pro class.

5th Place
DesignT1
Protoform Dodge Stratus 190mm(yellow/purple)

Design 8
Difficulty 8
Execution 8
Total 24

This is a nicely executed design. This type of style seems to be all the rage these days. I like the detail in the carbon fiber and rips. Although there was some paint splatter in the shadows on the close ups. The colors don't seem to pop like your other submission. The streaking is nice but a little light and could have used some 'pop'. Your airbrush control is really really good. I was impressed with how consitent your outlines are. Nice job.

4th place
RespirologyRC

Design 8
Difficulty 9
Execution 8
Total 25

Wow what great colors this thing really stands out. The red body with blue flames is a nice combo. This body would look good flying around a track. One of the things that distracts from the design is how heavy and blocky the yellow barbs are. They could have been a little smaller for me. The detail in the flames is really good. The drop shadows could be a little more tapered at the ends of the flames and at the points of the barbs. You always do nice work and this one is no exception. Keep it up!

3Rd Place
Mab Man20
Paint Accident

Design 9
Difficulty 8
Execution 9
Total 26

That really stinks that you spilled paint on your nice new body but I could still make out the design underneath it all........
Actually this is such a 3 dimensional design. The paint really stands out semmingly floating off of the main body as if you were flying through it. Nice touch with the headlight peaking through the paint. The added touch of the white reflective dashes on the blobs really works. The shadows are a little heavy but for this design I think it works to give it the depth. I don't care for the shade of the green but overall the colors work ok. Your pinstriping and outlining is clean. Now wipe some of that paint spill up!

2nd Place
DesignT1
Protoform Dodge Stratus 3.0 190mm(orange)

Design 9
Difficulty 9
Execution 9
Total 27

I just love the colors on this one.....wow. This job is seemingly in another league from your other entry. The color selection is much better and really compliements the streaking. You definitely have a handle on your airbrush skills. This is also one of the popular styles that people are requesting these days but is not quite as detailed as some others. What you lacked in detail you made up in quality. The streaking starts off really good but towards the end gets a little wide and blown out. Tapering the streaks at the ends of the orange would help a little. I'd be proud to run this body at the track!

And finally your winner...........

1st Place
TK Customs
Skull master flash!

Design 9
Difficulty 10
Execution 10
Total 29

Detail....Detail.....Detail. What a work of art! This is a really nice design with an extreme amount of detail. If I could give additional detail points I would. Those skulls are hard to do. I swear you can do skulls in your sleep and probably dream about them too. The detail in the rips is really well done. The logo is also nicely detailed but could have been a little more subtle with the dark lines in the metal. The only points that I took off was for the color selection of the green pinstripe with the purple shadow. They don't seem in place with the rest of the design. The glitter in the blue really stands out in the sunlight. Excellent work and truly deserving of the win.

Well there you have it the pro class results. Nice job everyone!

TK......you're up next month.

This one looks like it felt really good when taking off the protective coating! :D Nice crisp lines, and very well executed. Looks like there is some minor bleeding on some lines, but that could just be scratches. I wish you took some pictures of it when it was new! (This would bring your score up)

Every time I see one of your bodies I know you are trying new things and that’s whats great. Also, I notice that it looks like you rush through your masking so that it comes out worse than you expected. Masking is KEY to a good paintjob. Next time, maybe look at some designs on the internet and try to copy almost what they do. Take your time when you are planning out your design. If it doesn’t look right the first time, erase your sharpie lines and start over new with rubbing alcohol. Hopefully this will help :)

That’s a really cool design and GREAT for your first airbrushed body! Very nice mask job with little to no bleeds. The only thing that I can’t get to click is the color combo… I don’t know why, but that’s my only problem with this body. Good Job!

The colors go better on this one. It is nice and sleek. Only a couple tiny bleeds that I see, not bad. When you are trying to do a fade, or any type of flame of some sort, you don’t want to have white on the start and end of the flame. (or whatever you want to call it). Start with the burst (the red part) but you want a light coat. Then fade out with the yellow, then the white. I think I need some help explaining this one… Piggy?

First off, welcome to the painting world!!! This is your first body? Damn, much better than my first! Did you use Liquid Mask or masking tape? Either way there are barely any bleeds. Good start to your painting career!

Protoform Mazda 6 Lightweight 190mm

Design 7

You have a great scheme going here. The colors go great together. The carbon fiber is ok, but if you really want to make it seem “real” looking, use tool box lining, aka the stuff under your carpet, and lightly spray the silver. It takes some practice, but it will definitely make the scores go up. Also, work on making your pinstripes even all the way through.

Nice body with a nice choice of colors. Great shadows too. I wish I had a close up of what was on those front designs though. The side designs could use some pin striping to bring them out a bit. Good Job!

Pumpkinfish
Proline Mugen MST-1 body

Design 7
Difficulty 7
Execution 8
Total 22

Nice job, there are only a couple minor flaws with this one, but the rest is great. You need to make your pin striping more precise and smooth, visualize the first line and draw the second exactly like it, with the exact distance away from it. Another thing to consider would be to put some shadowing in the front and arrows to make it look like they are popping out. Also, im not a fan of big empty spaces, try putting some other cool design in that room!

Mo4040
Team Losi Class 8 Ford Truck Body

This paintjob is a good starter, but it definitely needs more. A couple racing stripes might do the trick. No bleeds that I can see though, woohoo!

1stGenCRXer
Protoform Nemesis 200mm

Design 7
Difficulty 7

The pics are working again. I like your color choice for this one. For the drip effect, you definitally want to make them more out of control and not exactly the same as the others. Make them look like they were splattered. Also cut down on the shadowing a little bit.

TOP 4!!!!

4. Carbon Madness
JConcepts T4 illuzion

Design 8
Difficulty 8
Execution 7
Total 23

This would be such an awesome racing body. I love how well the orange and the blue matches. Work on cutting out the shapes more smoothly and make your drips less symmetrical and more wild. (like you just hit a paint can or some water). A little heavy on the shadows, but I think that makes the body sweeter and more “Dark” looking. Sweet!

3. Wrobico
X1 CRT

Design 8
Difficulty 8
Execution 8
Total 24

This is an AWESOME replica of Prolines ST-R body! I like how you changed it up a bit too! The flag is INSANE and looks like it is swaying in the breeze. You would’ve made it higher if the triangle coming off of the side was done better, and if the shadows in the front had more “pop”.

2. RyanD
Protoform mazda 6

Design 9
Difficulty 8
Execution 8
Total 25

This would look great on the track! The paintjob gives it that “pro” look. That color purple with the yellow and orange is awesome. I don’t really know what happened under the side, rear window. It looks way too round to be on that “sharp” looking body. Instead of doing that, make is more jagged with the same kind of flames on the front. This would’ve won the comp but……

1. Farwar
Pro-line Alfa Romeo

Design 9
Difficulty 8

WOW! I absolutely love the fade, blue shadowing and nice pinstripes. The pictures really made this body catch my eye. All I would recommend is if you are going to do the fade that early, I would fade into a third color like purple or green. Also, I think you should leave out those black stripes on the top, it is OK, but it doesn’t go with the rest of the body, and probably would’ve been better left out. Congrats! You won, and it’s definitely time for the pro class!!! Yayyyy (now you get to judge next month sucka!!! hahaha lol jk)

To all that entered, this was ONE HELL of a competition!!! I could not decide who to pick. Literally, it took me 10 minutes. EVERY SINGLE entry was good, and you should all be proud of your work. Please don’t take anything in a harsh way, I was just giving you some feedback that “I” think would help. Great Comp!!!

Nice job Buggy. You bet that will be a nice racing body, too bad I have to wait for the winter seson to race it. :( Now that the comp. is over I guess I can tell everyone that that was my first airbrushed body, and second body that I have painted. :) I realy like the feedback on the dips and shadows as it is all new to me. As I learn the brush more then my drop shadows should be alot better.

Thanks
