Best Paint Competition – July 2006

Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of July and will close at Midnight (EST) on Monday, July 31, 2006.

Restrictions: None. This is an open paint contest. Extra points will be awarded to those with a patriotic theme. Patriotic themes include, but are not limited to, nation's flag, patriotic symbols, national heroes, etc.

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. Bodies with a patriotic theme will be awarded a total of 3 bonus points to be added to their total. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.

Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact Piggy89373 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.

If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Piggy89373 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

TKCustoms will judge this month’s Pro Class. The amateur judge will be chosen shortly.

Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition.

Next months compeition will be under new management.

Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Carbon, organizing these contests does not prevent me from entering them from time to time. I'll leave these contests in the very capable hands of Mab_Man. He has more power on these boards, ran them before, and is an all around good guy. I've run these contests into the RCCA wall and it's time for me to pass this to someone just as capable with more influence in RCCA.

I'll still frequent the boards here from time to time to help out as I can, just not as often. I'm focusing my efforts on a different site where the outlook seems much more promising.

Mr. Onorato, if you read this, look to Mab_Man for your help, he'll give you the help you need. Instead of looking at only a few paint jobs, take the time know these people and choose from there.

The skull was done with a few hand cut stencils. It's a layering technique, much like the fire.

I don't recommend using Faskolor for fire, Spaz Stix is the way to go. I get mine off there website, and yes, they will take Paypal. http://www.spazstix.com/Spazindex.html

Wil,

Thanks for the compliments! The silver is 3 mist coats of createx auto air silver backed with Faspearl Charcoal. In the past I have mixed up a mixture of faspearl silver and faspearl charcoal to get this effect too.

I'm a happy camper with the shadowing! I usually overpower the shadows thinking it's not going to show up good, but now I think I found my groove!

So i guess i'm going to get judged against you 1/8 scale guys :o Well seeing that this was done in a body that is less than 1/4 the size of your lids. I should be given a bit more consideration in the paints. For instance; at the end of every competition there is are points given for difficulty, well I feel that those of us that paint 1/18 scale should be given a +1 or +2 extra in this category because of the size difference. If i were to paint a 1/8 scale lid I'm sure my lines would look better as well as the overall paint job
This is just my 2 cents, seeing that every competition i receive no extra consideration for the scale i paint in.

I think your work to this point just hasn't caught the judges eye yet. This one may be different though. It is really nice.

Have you tried to start a paint competition on some of the sites dedicated to the 1/18th scale stuff? You might find that there is a good following that would participate.

hijacker
07-20-2006, 06:06 PM
Thanks for the compliments guys! BuggyRacer, I did the black lines with the blue painter's masking tape. I stuck a strip of tape to a piece of glass and using a straight edge I cut it into thin strips. Sticking the masking tape to glass allows you to peel it off without damaging the tape or ruining the glue on the back. After I painted the rest of the body I pulled up the strips and hit it with the black for the "seams" between the "panels". The black dots that are supposed to look like rivets are just put inside the body with a Sharpie marker before any paint is laid down.

Wish I'd taken pics of this body in the sunlight. The colors really pop!

KronicRacer, If you haven't gone to the adrcracing website you should treat yourself. The paint work is incredible.

Resp. That Baja Bug is killer, the colors are great and the design kicks.
Knoing that it's a 1/18 just makes it that much more impressive.

Hijacker. Both lids are great. You've done an awsome job using the Red, White and Blue in your paint jobs.

The extra consideration us up to the judges. If they think you should get special dispensation for painting in a smaller scale, they can give it to you. I agree that painting the smaller scales is considerably tougher. Has it ever occurred to you that your posting up the time frame it takes for you to paint these bodies has jaded the judges a slight bit in favor of the larger bodies? They also might think your graphics aren't clean enough, the paint job doesn't flow well, or the colors don't jive as well as the larger scales. Just my 2 cents.

Well here goes nothing. This is the very first body i have painted. I painted it for my bud as a race body. I figured even if it turned out horrible it would still stick out fairly well on the track. Anyway there is a ton of stuff i Know i did wrong, but i am still pleased with it. Also this was all airbrushed, and it is also my first time airbrushing anything. And for some reason the double sided tape shows through the wing.

Ok here are the results for the Amateur class.

10. Rs4 Rally boi – Welcome to the paint competition! Your body looks nice and clean. It’s a simple paint job with a graphic on the hood. I do see some bleeds though in the paint. To overcome this, use your fingernail and press on the outside edge of the mask to seal it and paint wont get under it. If it does, you can use a toothpick or something to take away the excess paint.

Design: 5
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 5
Total: 15

9. Evaderstman – This is another bright body. The colours in the sun pop and they seem to go together all right. For your first airbrushed body, you did well. There are some flaws though. You need to work on making your masking cleaner. What I mean by this is not have so many jagged edges. Your flames need some work on being smoother as well. If you keep practising, I’m sure your next body will be a lot better.

Design: 6
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 6
Total: 17

8. Wrobico – I first want to say, way to go for trying the true fire effect for your third body. Most would be intimidated by it. I think that you did a good job for your skill level. I think that you need to make the fire look less stencilled and it will not look like Swiss cheese. I think that if you put some bright parts in the fire, it would pop a lot. Overall I like how you had the courage to attempt this and that got you some extra points.

Design: 5
Execution: 6
Difficulty: 8
Total: 19

7. Civicwil #1 - I like what you did with this body. The marbleising looks good and everything looks clean and crisp. There is just something about it that doesn’t grab my attention. I think if you added some drop shadows on the stars and gave it some depth, it would stand out more. You get extra points for a patriotic body too.

Design: 5
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 5
Bonus: 2 points
Total: 20

6. Vato Loco – I like this body, it is simple and clean but has a nice style to it. It really pops in the sun with the metallic paint. I like the skull in the back as well. I think since your just a beginner, this is a very well done body. Most have trouble with bleeding and masking troubles but this body shows you overcame that. Good job on it and keep painting!

Design: 7
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 5
Total: 20

5. Wrobico – I like this better then the first body you posted. The lines are clean and crisp and the back fade looks good too. I’m not a fan of the colours you picked though but it may just be me. I think that if you put a pinstripe around all the graphics it would pop more. Also you were attempting a fade in the graphics, try to bring the paint in more as you get to the middle, add less paint to it to achieve a gradual fade. Keep up the good work!

Design: 7
Execution: 7
Difficulty: 6
Total: 20

4. Cartrance17542 – I think for an 11-year-old, they did an awesome job. For their second body, I can’t wait to see the third! You can’t go wrong with a flame job. I like that you put in a pinstripe because most would leave that out. There are some parts of the pinstriping that are not as clean as other parts. Some of the flame licks don’t have a good of flow as the others on the body as well. I still like the body and keep up the good work. Please post your next body!

Design: 7
Execution: 7
Difficulty: 7
Total: 21

3. Civicwil #2 – This one I like a lot better. You execute your paint jobs well because everything looks crisp and clean. This one has more pop to it also. I assume you have an airbrush since the type of paints you use. I would suggest going ripped metal on the parts in the front and the side to give the effect that the paint is being peeled back revealing the flag. I like this body better then the first one.

Design: 6
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 6
Bonus: 2 points
Total: 22

2. Hijacker #2 – This is not as good as your last body. I like the design and the sheet metal. Everything looks like it is cut clean and it is crisp. The only complaint I have is put down the black paint for shading. It kills the depth and it stands out too much. Try to use a transparent black or grey and layer light. It will give a much better result in the realism of the shading. Good job with the body though, keep on painting, you have some potential.

Design: 7
Execution: 7
Difficulty: 7
Bonus: 2 points
Total: 23

1. Hijacker #1 – Wow, this body is bright! Your design is very well executed and done well. The script is nice and clean and consistent. If you wanted to step it up a notch, you could have made the flag look like it was waving in the wind. Overall I really like this body. Congrats on winning this months competition. I didn't like that both of your bodies came in first and second but they were the two best ones. Have fun judging next months!

Design: 8
Execution: 9
Difficulty: 8
Bonus: 2 points
Total: 27

Thanks to all who entered. It was tough deciding the scores to give some of them. Congrats to hijacker for winning this months competition. For all the runner ups, I expect you to come back in full force with bigger and better bodies. :D Paint on!

Wow! Thanks Farwar, I appreciate all the comments, especially the advice to use something other than black for the shadowing. I'm usually disappointed with the shadowing as it usually looks to "heavy". I read at www.cfxpaintworks.com that using window tint paint works well for shadowing.

Looking forward to judging next month's amateur entries.

Just when you thought that I would never fulfill my duties... :D

Here are my results, I tried to be as objective as possible and remember the following is my opinion only. I try to make constructive comments and offer suggestions where I can. In my opinion these contests should help everyone to improve even the winner. You all did a great job and I wish you all the best in your painting adventures.

10th place - RespirologyRC, 1/18 panel truck - Design 4, Execution 5, Difficulty 4, Total 13.
Resp this body is not up to your capabilities, it looks rushed. You can do better, I would be wiling to give extra credit for 1/18 scale but only if the job is equal to what you can do on a tenth scale body. Remember, you can paint any scale you want.

9th place - Aluma, Mazda 6 - Design 5, Execution 5, Difficulty 4, Total 14.
I like the color combination but the design doesn’t flow well and your cuts could be smoother.

8th place - designt1, SSR - Design 5, Execution 5, Difficulty 7, Total 17.
I am not feeling the layout on this one, it doesn’t seem to have a very good flow. You need to include the pinstripes when doing your drop shadows.

7th place - Aluma, Buggy- Design 5, Execution 7, Difficulty 6, Total 18.
This is much better than the Mazda body. The flames are nice and the pinstripe looks good, I also like the carbon effect on the roof.

6th place (tie) - RespirologyRC, 1/18 Baja - Design 6, Execution 6, Difficulty 7, Total 19.
Much better than the panel truck for sure. The design and colors are nice but the pinstripes could be more even in width. I want to see what you can do if you spend a little more time on a 1/18 scale body. I bet you could fool us into thinking it’s a larger scale.

6th place (tie) - designt1, REVO - Design 6, Execution 7, Difficulty 6, Total 19.
Nice simple clean design. The colors are good and the carbon fiber on the bed looks nice. Work on making your rounded cuts a little smoother and a pinstripe around the tribal would make a big difference.

5th place - Spamcake - Design 6, Execution 8, Difficulty 6, Total 20.
Very cleanly done but not enough contrast with the pinstripe. The matching helmet is a nice touch but I’ve seen better designs from you.

4th place - GoofyTexan - Design 7, Execution 7, Difficulty 7, Total 21.
The POW logo is great. I like the flage them but I would change a few things, I would not put a shadow between the stripe and I would make the stars slightly smaller. Good job.

3rd place - designt1, Charger - Design 8, Execution 8, Difficulty 8, Total 24.
This is by far the best of your three entries. The only things I would change are a different color pinstripe for each different main color and try and do your drop shadows in a “V” are in one motion, this will keep it from looking like a shadow over a shadow. Nice work

2nd place - ApexSpeed - Design 7, Execution 9, Difficulty 9, Total 25.
Super clean design with no visible paint bleeds. It may look simple but I know from experience how hard these type of paint jobs are to pull off. Very nice!

Beautiful job, you are the Mike Lavalle of the R/C true fire world. I like the skull design but I would like to see a less stenciled look to it. You have set the bar high for those trying to accomplish true fire jobs on lexan. Congratulations you have earned the privilege of judging the August 2006 pro entries!

Good point, I was operating on three hours of sleep when I did this. At this point however, I am leaving the results as they are.

With 3 more points (10% bonus) you would have tied for third. Consider it a moral victory!

Goofy, I accounted for the patriotism in my scores, I just didn't add it as a separate catagory. You have done better paintwork and I feel the bodies that scored higher than your entry were better executed. Just because there is a flag on something doesn't make it an "instant winner", this was still an open contest with patriotism as a bonus.

Remember, This is only my opinion but I was the judge for this month. I am done justifying my results, hell it takes almost as long to judge this contest as it does to paint a body.

Carry on. :D

Is this the first time we've had somebody enter a contest after the judging is completed?

Samaj, I think you put that in the wrong contest. You should have put it in this thread: http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=223448&page=1. Nice looking work, btw!
