Best Paint Competition – August 2006
Concourse!!
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of August and will close at Midnight (EST) on Thursday, August 30, 2006.
Restrictions: Concourse. All bodies should be painted (or should I say modeled) to appear as a real life car. The more realism the better. This includes not only paint, but added features like tail pipes, rear view mirrors, seating, dash boards, etc.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required (Ignore this this month). Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: Concourse.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. Bodies with a patriotic theme will be awarded a total of 3 bonus points to be added to their total. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
1b) Concourse addition: Does the design look like something you would find on a real car? How many details has the modeler added?
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
2b) Concourse addition: In addition to the paint, do the extra details look real? Are they scaled correctly? Does it look real?
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
3b) Concourse addition: How hard is it to make/add the details displayed on the body? Did they use a kit, a model, or mold something from scratch?
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
______( to be added later) will judge this month’s Pro Class. The amateur judge will be judged by Hijacker.
Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition.
This month's competition is under new management. Please loiter.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

I figure since you will all be getting to know me very well in the near future, Id start with a simple post to let you get to know me better.
Worry not, the competitions are still in able hands. Several years ago with the help of Bob Hastings (can I say that name around here any more) and hauntedmyst, with inspiration from the HPI forum paint competitions the RCZ paint competitions were created. For a little over a year the competitions grew and the rules evolved and I got way too busy with college to put in the necessary time to keep these running fluidly. So the torch was passed, and I regretfully walked into the sunset (to enjoy college ;) ). Now I am back. I have a new found appreciation for my trusty airbrush and a desire to help fledgeling painters (like I once was) turn into the next charlieb, rcaddikt, or hauntedmyst (which im not).
Good luck to all in the future competitions!! I will be entering my own disasters of masking and colors into the pro class whenever I get a chance.

scotty2fast- any luck with postn pics?if not i will do a right up 2 nite to explain how to post pics the way i do it.it maybe alot of steps but once u get the hang of it,it will take a minute or 2.i use picasa software, its free
heres a link
http://picasa.google.com/
download the software, nowonce its in your menu on your "start" menu on your compy, click on it,now all your photos u have on your compy will come up on the screen,u will see a folder icon then the date of photos n then the pics of the photos in that floder n so forth.
then click on the photo u want,it will come up on the screen, now go over to the "file" word on top n drag down the menu,u will see a line that says "export to picture folder", a blue box will come up in the middle of your screen.adjust the settings to 640 pixes n the jpeg setting to 50% n then save,u will see a new folder in youy "my pictures" that says pisaca exports, this is where your resized photo is.
no u know how u respond to the forums here with reply to message, now on that screen ,it says additinaol options, there it says a "button" that says managa attachments",click on that, now a another box will come up n it will says browse, click on that button,go to the picasa picture folder u just created n then select the photo u want to upload n upload photo, wait till it says u have file attached then summitn then u should be good to go!i hope this helps u out!

nice, I've always wanted an evo 7 body...but just one thing...the evo's custom exhaust should be at an angle and hang a little lower and a little more in.(to simulate real ones)
Anyone know where I can find a picture or pdf of the decal sheet for that evo 7?

Good suggestions, but I couldn't find a good way to mount the exhaust. I actually used a hook made for putting up picture frames and shoe-goo-ed it to the exhaust. Then shoe-goo-ed to the body where the bumper is.

you can always use the left over lexan strips to make hangers that you can shoogoo to the body. Just paint black before mounting. Lexan can twist and keep its shape too. :D If you happen to have the heavy duty proline truck shell left overs its really strong too.

To all current entrants
This is a concourse competition. I dont want to get rid of bodies, that would be mean. If you submitted something that you dont feel is a concourse style body IM me and I will remove you post.
The other option is that we just go forth and let everyone enter. A decision must be made. I dont want to be your overlord and make decisions contradictory to the public opinion. So please weigh in. If demanded I can make executive decisions as to what a concourse body is and delete all else.

SAMAJ-Take another pic of it if u can,the site wont let u reuse the same photo.believe me i tryed.
mabman-u should keep it just to concours.all none qualifing entries should be in next months open contest!i am not trying to sound mean or step on anybodys toes but this is what "restrictions" r for.
speaking of restrictions,i suggest u inforce this, for example last months was "patriotic" theme, that was the restriction but then bonus points were "awarded" to those who suppsoly fell into contest guidelines.basically what i am saying is keep the contest theme to a tee.
Mab,
I would definitly agree with Fester. There are enough open contest months for everyone to enter their 'non theme' work into. The themed months should only be for theme paint jobs. Just getting a bonus point for doing a theme isn't enough incentive to do theme work let alone make a difference in the judges points. I would like to see only theme paintjobs accepted on restriction months. Just my 2 cents.

MabMan - we might be eliminating a lot of people from entering the contest if you keep it theme only, especially for a concours contest, many people won't/don't want to put the time into a body to be able to do well in a concours contest. We could make the theme bonus significant enough that if someone actually wanted to win they would need to follow the theme. Some people might just want to post their pics and let their paint jobs be seen.
My 2 cents, but I'll leave it up to you as the guy with the job of moderating this thread. However you decide is cool with most of us I think.

You should be able to bring it up in photoshop or a similar program and save it again under a different name and repost it. I've done that before.

Samaj, another option is to use a hosting site like www.photobucket.com to host your sites. This will let you post the same picture in multiple threads.
Mab, here's what I've seen. If you restrict it to only concourse bodies, you'll greatly decrease the amount of entries to only 2 or 3. For paint restrictions (theme bodies not concourse), you greatly restrict the entries and will get few posts. It's a fine line between entry numbers and events. To keep maximum participation, I went with the bonus points for bodies meeting the themes. But, it's up to you on how you want to do it. Either way, you'll have to step forward as the overlord and make the executive decision.

but what about the people that do put the time into the body n they wind up loosing to a painter whos body didnt fall into the guidelines.yes it is a fine line between the 2!
what i suggest is then let it slide this month but come september, entries must fall within the rules no exeptions!mab its your call bud!

Good call Fester, we could just let it go this month.
We could make the bonus for the theme something like 5 points so that it would almost guarantee a theme body would win unless a non-theme body was just exceptional.

And the overlord heard his people and spoke
This will be strictly a concourse month. Here is why:
1) Yes there are fewer entries, but thats ok. When we first started this every other month was concourse. A concourse body will never win a regular paint contest due to the nature of the project, but they are beautiful works of art that deserve their time in the spot light, regardless of how few take the opportunity.
2) The rest of us can wait till next month to enter just like I must.
3) Bonus points in this situation are futile. The points given to a concourse paint job will be hopelessly behind and would require so many bonus points that it will be comparing apples to oranges and require a seperate contest anyway. Future restricted contests may have bonus points, this will be announced at the beginning of the given contest.
This decision is final. I bear full responsibility for a low turnout if it occurs and I encourage any and all who love detailing RC cars to use this opportunity.
[/boring rule varification]
My work computer doesnt let me see all the pictures, but in about an hour things will start getting the chop.

first of all, thank you for all those who welcomed me. the tamiya carbon printed gt-r body came out that way from the company so all you have
to do was apply decals. they came out , i think in limited numbers and on
the altezza, nsx, 350z,modena, mr-s and the gt-r bodies only. i can't tell
for sure if its painted but tamiya calls them carbon printed and its all
over so that's why i had to cut out the windshields rather than placing

eli-Concourse. All bodies should be painted (or should I say modeled) to appear as a real life car. The more realism the better. This includes not only paint, but added features like tail pipes, rear view mirrors, seating, dash boards, etc.

AirBoston 4th
Design: 6
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 5
Total: 19
Body: Tamiya Golf VR6
Paint: AutoAir Yellow, Teal, Bright Blue, Red,
Mask: LM
Class: Pro
Nice and clean, paint job was well done, but this body lacks the details. I would liked to have seen a half way rolled down window, or a tale pipe, or a custom sunroof. Your a talented painter and detailer AB, and with the last day submission, I'm guessing you didn't have time to do much detailing to the nicely painted body.

Not much painting to do on this one, but that didn't stop you from putting a lot of work and detail into this body. It look great, nice job on the windows!

mask used: armak masking tape hand cut

Nice work all around on this one, a ton of detail to look at. I realizes this a a real world car scheme, but I would liked to have seen more focus on the paint. Maybe a little sharper red graphic with some drop shadows. I guess what I'm saying is you can make it better than the real car!

paint used: createx iridium fuchsia and pearlized white
mask used: electrical tape hand cut

Very nice job on this one, I'm not a fan of any shade of Pink, but for this body it work incredibly well. Lots of detail all around and nice job on the front canards and air splitters! One thing I would have liked to see is the pigs ear trimmed around the drivers side head light. Do the water slides look as good in person as they do in the PICS?

Congratulations to hgcolors on some nice concourse work! :)
A special thanks to AB for posting up some of his work as well. :)

AMATEUR JUDGING RESULTS
Great entries this month, especially considering it was a concourse contest which requires the extra effort to impress a judge.
5th Place.
Jinx's Impreza WRC
Design 5
Execution 5
Difficulty 5
Total: 15
Nice looking car Jinx, but unfortunately all of the design ideas are the manufacturer's. It isn't hard to shoot a one color paint job with a rattle can and add decals. However, if this was a photography contest, you would have won hands down!
4th Place
Z-Man280's BMW M3
Design 7
Execution 6
Difficulty 6
Total: 19
The car looks real but I don't see any additions for realism that will score you points in a concourse contest. Great job on the homemade wing!
3rd Place
Vato Loco's Parma Skool Bus
Design 7
Execution 5
Difficulty 8
Total: 20
I like the reflective tape for lights. I like the design of your bus, but unfortunately it doesn't look real enough to score big in a concourse competition. Leaving the body posts and antenna visible hurts a little too in a concourse comp.
2nd Place
Z-Man280's Nissan
Design 8
Execution 9
Difficulty 9
Total: 26
I really like this car, and the more I look at it the more I like it. It looks real, too bad the headlights don't look more realistic when they are off. I had to take something away for leaving the body posts and antenna visible, it should never be done for a serious concourse comp body. The wheels are really cool, and I gave you points for difficulty there. I had to give you 2nd place because I would have liked to see more details, such as something with the grill, tow-hooks, a driver's side window net etc. Great looking car!
1st Place
trickedoutGT's Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
Design 9
Execution 9
Difficulty 9
Total: 27
Very nice looking car. I'm never a fan of a single color paint job, but in a concourse competion it just seems to work a lot of the time. The realism of this body is great. Nice work on the grill and intercooler, it is this that won the competition for you. I think you could have cut out the vents to the left and right of the grill a little cleaner, but overall a very nice concourse entry. Congrats on the win! Enjoy judging next month.

a big thanks to adrc for taking the time to judge.
I highly respect you as a painter.
I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to do with this car plus it's the first one I've done formyself in a LONG time, so I didn't want to rush it... except for adding the decals at the last minute to get it posted on time for the contest. I'm working on a customers car too, so that one may me it in time for the next concours. This one will have a 911 muffler, cage and dash and whatever else I can create. Thanks for the comments.
