You'll want some good batteries, like IB3800s or IB4200s. Some good tires, but you'll have to ask other guys at the track which tires work best for them.
Where is the track at?

At my track(which is closing) a guy has a X-cellerator and is always in the top 3. So they definetly can be competitive, but it's mostly driving that makes you win.

The first thing I would do is service the tranny area to remove all the grease they pack into the gears. The Tranny is a direct duplicate of a T4/B4 tranny so the parts are interchangable. Get a T4/B4 Idler gear to replace the stock one. Also, check what tires the others are racing. That is 90% of the setup taken care of in tires alone. I believe the guy who runs at my track left everything else stock except for the electronics.

mxnut273, are you looking at buying the X-Cellerator from the Hobby People in Santa Clarita? One of my buddies works there :p. He's also close to Hot Rod's, and him and his brother go there occasionally.

If you want to read more about the guy I am referring to, go here:

On page three of the tread there is some information on what parts are interchangable from other manufacuters.
Here is the official XTM forums:
