In my opinion you're better off buying a Novak GTB and getting the SS5800 (8.5) motor separately. The Super Sport Plus controller is only rated to run the SS5800 (8.5), the SS4300 (10.5) and the new Novak brushless 'stock' motor (13.5). If you ever want to run any of the Velociti motors (7.5, 6.5, 5.5, 4.5, 3.5) you'll need the GTB.

With that said, I've run the 8.5 motor and while it isn't the fastest thing available, it is very smooth and isn't slow by any means.

I have 2 of the SS5800 (the old one, not the plus) and a 4300. The 8.5 is a renamed version of the 5800. I find them very easy to set up and use, and have good power and torque, as compared to the brushed motors I used to run. I take mine racing on weekends at a local track in a T3 FT. I have the fastest truck there (and worst driver.. go figure).

Most weekends, people come up and ask what I'm running because it is noticbly faster than the other cars out there. Top speed only a bit faster, but it pulls way harder. I'm one of the only brushless people there at the moment, and the only one with a stadium truck.

Very easy to install. Another bonus is that it does not require top notch batteries. I'm sure they help, but I currently run powerizer 3300s ($17 each) and still get good performance without burning them up. It runs very consistently. No diminshed performance due to brush condition or comm.

Note that the 5800/4300 is basically an entry level brushless system. They only get bigger and more powerful from here.

The GTB is a step up, and is a better system, for not that much more money. If you can swing it, it might be a better idea to go with one of those as the other guy recommended. Checking tower prices, the 7.5 GTB system is only $15 more at the moment. I like my SS5800, but for $15, getting the GTB is a no brainer.

The only other brushless I own is a small Mamba in my 1/18 car, so I have no basis for comparison with other 1/10 brushless system, although I hope to get a mamba max sometime this year.

I agree. If you want to go the Novak route (and more specifically, the 5800 motor), I too, suggest you get the GTB ESC. It will allow you to have way more motor choices in the Novak and LRP lineup as opposed to being cornered into just the 8.5, 10.5, and 13.5.

Buying the GTB and then 8.5 motor separately like that will probably be more costly, but it's worth it IMO. Or, you could get the GTB 7.5 combo, which should be a bit faster than the 8.5, and comes with a "better" rotor (probably also cheaper to buy it as a combo like that too if you're strapped for cash).:D

I run the 7.5 and GTB in a stadium truck and it is very fast. Good combo.

You could also get a remanufactured SS5800 from Novak for about $165.

I also have to toss in a recommendation for the GTB controller. Go ahead and get a stupid fast system, like the 3.5 and then just grab an SS5800. The 5800 is very smooth and it's probably more power than you'll ever be able to put to the ground on a dirt track. I started out with a 5.5, and it was way too much. I just backed the 5800 up with an 8Ah 2S Lipo and the runtimes were crazy. Something around 50 minutes or so.

Get a 7.5 or 6.5 motor then buy a 5800 on the side. Get the GTB it chancges how they drive. You will have less problems.

what are you going to put it in? a monster, sedan, or stadium? it makes a difference in areas like torque and thermal shutdown.
