I have a mamba 25 in a mlst. I was running a Hyperion 6K for a couple of months on a two cell lipo with no problems.

I purchased a three cell thunder power capable of 30A burst(overkill) as soon as I started using this battery I had problems with heat. The only settings I changed was the cutoff voltage.

I think I eventually burnt up the motor from running a little to long. I have no experience with brushless motors so the motor would hardly turn and the motor and esc would get real hot real quick. didnt know the problem so I went with the cheapest option.

I recieved a new motor this weekend and plugged it into the esc and hit the throttle. the motor runs fine but the motor and esc still get hot within twenty seconds and that is holding the motor in my hand with zero load on it.

Question is; do I have an esc problem? Is it hardware orr software? has anyone else had the same problem and could explain?

Running a brushless motor with no load will always get it hot very quickly - they need a load to operate efficiently. I'd pop the new motor in the mlst and give it a try, just check the temperature of the motor and ESC every minute or so for the first run. If things continue to get too hot you can try a smaller pinion gear or go back to a 2 cell LiPo pack. Going from a 2 cell to a 3 cell is a huge increase in power - and as a result generates more heat.

You can also lower the motor timing in the speed control - that may help a few degrees.

I did pop it in and I it ran for around ten minutes. It waas plenty hot. The new motor was not as hot as the previous would have been, but I also intalled the dynamite heat sinks since they are packaged for two motors I installed both on my one motor. twice as much suface are as one.

It is not the heat of the motor that concerns me but the heat of the esc.

If you use the USB link, make sure you use v1.02. Also, I believe the Hyperion is a 400 size motor.

If you didn't change anything other than LVC, then yes, it's going to run smoking hot and burn up.

You said you went from 2-cell to 3-cell. So you increased power input by 50%. If you don't decrease gear ratio you can expect to burn stuff up.
