View Full Version : Mamba Max Problems

I have recently purchased a Mamba max 5700 combo and am having no luck in getting it to function properly. I have cut the motor wires, braided the motor and esc wires, changed reciever position, changed antenna position, changed esc position, tried 3 different vehicles, 3 different recievers (1am 2 fm), 2 radios, different batteries (GP 3300's Tenergy 3500's), different gearing combinations and almost all of the settings available on the esc. My problem is the car is only usable within a 10 to 20 foot range reliably (this range increases slightly when FM radio is used). When used on the grass with my bigger tires the car merely hops about as the esc pulses current to the motor briefly. This is not merely cogging, as I can get fantastic performance out of the car when standing very close to it. The car I have the motor in is a brand new Associated T4 stadium truck using the stock radio and reciever. My other 2 vehicles were broken when the cars decided to run full power into a curb during a rather bad glitch. Needless to say I am getting very frustrated with this happening, especially when everyone else has not had problems with the motor in their unmodified vehicles. I have sent 3 emails to Castle now with not much in the way of responses other than to cut motor wires, move esc, move reciever, replace reciever etc. I now know the problem is not with any of the radio/vehicle equipment that I am running. Is any one else expereincing any similar problems with their mamba max combos.
Here are some pics of the car. As you can see, fairly standard rig up.

I assume you went through the initial endpoint setup first and any time after updating software on the esc(?).

Yes I recalibrated the esc after software changes. The combo functions perfectly except for the loss of control/unreliable power delivery at moderate distances. I have taken it to my local hobby store and have had no luck diagnosing the problem with the owner.
Is it ok to cut the motor wires on the MM motors? I know on some motors they say not to cut the motor wires. Could the problem be a bad solder joint somewhere? Maybe you just have a bad ESC or motor.

I was told by castle to cut the motor wires. I am starting to think it is a bad esc as I have tried everything and cannot get satisfactory performance out of it. It just really sucks to have to wait for a month while it is being shipped to and from the factory.

its possible the esc is putting out a lot of em noise thus causing you too loose controll at long distances.
have you thought about or tried a spectrum dsm system on your car as that might fix your symtoms but not the cause.

I am going to buy a Nomadio radio soon. I just put the stock motor and esc back into the car and tried it with both the am stock radio and my JR XS3 radio and RS300 reciever and both performed badly. I think I may just have the worst luck in the world with radios.

Your issues are almost certainly radio related.. not esc/motor.
I have seen a brand new AM radio glitch with brushless before in a local guys car. His radio did work fine with a regular stock motor setup though.
I have run brushless setups with a Airtronics 3PS FM, JR Xs3, and M8-Spektrum... never had a problem with those.
The nomadio is a sweet radio.... that would be killer to have :D

Well, I have installed the radio system from my Baja and now the system works perfectly. I just can't believe that I had that many crap recievers. I am going to have to see if I can return the radio and recievers. I don't think I will buy JR radio system again.

peelu i would like to point out that in my experiance with cheap am radios is that they only tend to work properly when you use the receiver and transmitter from the same manufacturer.
I have futaba and acoms am radios and performance is always much better when the receiver and transmitter are from the same manufacturer.
one thing i have noticed a really old am futaba radio set i have seems to consistantly out perform any modern AM radios in terms of range perhaps there trying to encorage people to get better (read more expensive) radio sets.
I have a spectrum module im my hitec pro car and it seems to perform nicely.

Usually if you get them reversed, the system just wont work, but make sure that in your old system that you have the crystal marked tx in the transmitter. I once got them switched up by mistake and the radio worked fine for about twenty feet, and then glitch city.

I have a Nomadio Sensor system I'd like to sell. V2 rx. Speed sensor magnets mounted in a B4 slipper clutch. Temp sensor is broken, otherwise works great. PM if interested.
