There has been a new Championship Oval series formed by Sonny Brown.---------------------- Hello Racers

As I announced earlier tonight on the R/C Race’n Radio Show I have formed a new oval racing organization the Brushless Racing League (BRL). The goal of the BRL is simple, we are here to support racers and race tracks and help oval racing grow again.

After promoting the Novak Midwest Brushless Oval Challenge this past February it opened my eyes to the fact that brushless racing as a huge potential to bring in new racers and bring back those we have lost over the past few years. My plan is to build on the success and momentum of the MBOC which drew almost 100 racers from 10 different states all competing in one single class. I'm proud to say that I received many post race comments about the event being one of the most fun well organized and innovative races in the country. I plan to bring the same level of organization, enthusiasm, & forward thinking and apply it to my new series. To do so I have formed the Brushless Racing League (BRL). Personally I enjoy all forms of R/C but Oval racing has always been my favorite and I want to see get back to the level it was in the late 80's and early 90's. Some will probably laugh and say it's impossible but my belief is it's only impossible if you don't try.

Here is how we plan to get started:

First the BRL will establish a sensible consistent set of class rules. All tracks that choose to accept these rules will be recognized as a BRL member track. The goal in establishing this rules package is to unify the member tracks and encourage growth and stability for the emerging brushless classes . Over the years many oval tracks have fragmented into localized class rules that has made it difficult for regional racers to travel form track to track. I believe this is one of the factors limiting oval growth. The rules package will be finalized and posted on our web-site September 5th.

In addition to the rules package I will be providing support to all BRL member tracks by promoting there local and regional events via our new website. I also plan to work with the track owners and exchange ideas, information and promotional materials that will help them to grow a strong weekly racing program.

Next The BRL will establish a 7 race National Championship Tour to be held over the 2006/2007 winter racing season. I’m happy to announce that BSR Racing Tires has come onboard as our title sponsor.

National points ranking will be determined by adding a racer best 4 points scores plus all accumulated bonus points. The points value for the Novak Nationals Finals to be held at the end of the season will increased 1 ½ times that of a regional event. This will allow racers to choose the 3 regional events that best fit into there schedule and also attend the National Finals. Bonus points will be awarded for each race attended so its conceivable that some drivers may choose to attend more then 4 events throughout the season.

The BRL National Titles will be on the line 3 in championship. Class rules are being finalized but here is a brief outline.

Sportsman Stock - Targeted at entry level to experienced 4 cell stock racers with provisions to keep it cost reduced. This class will use the new Novak Super Sport 13.5 Stock motor (NOV 3413) and any Novak or LRP ESC. Full stock car body with spoiler only (no wings) Rear of the body must remain intact (no cut outs). 4200 mah batteries max, limited to 2 battery packs for the weekend that must be pre-teched and marked. Race length 5 minutes

Pro 4300 - This will likely be the largest class and back bone of the series. The Novak Super Sport 4300 motor (NOV3401) will be used along with any Novak or LRP brushless ESC’s . Stock car body, rear cut out ok, Wings ok. 4200mah batteries max , no limit to number of packs used. Race length 5 minutes.

Pro Modified - The fastest class intended for experienced drivers. A list of approved motors will be provided at the moment it would include any available Novak or LRP brushless modified. Any Novak or LRP brushless ESC’s may be used. Stock car body, rear cut out ok, Wings ok. 4200mah batteries max , no limit to number of packs used. Race length 4 minutes.

Awards will be presented to all drivers in the A-Mains and all lower main winners. The top 10 driver in National point for each division will also receive awards.

All regional races will be 2 day events. For consistence and fairness all race schedules will remain exactly the same. Friday night practice will be discouraged and or limited to less then 2 hours in the evening. The reason for this is I want to eliminate the need for drivers who feel like the must take an additional day off work to keep up with others who are trying to get an early jump on practice. In the R/C world there are simply to many weekend events that are turning into 3 or 4 day races. My personal feeling is this is not good for the Sport. Our rules for the BRL Tour will state that a driver is not allowed on the track 48 hour prior to the first scheduled BRL practice session. The goal is a fair level playing field for the weekend.

We currently have a web site under construction www.brlracing.com that we hope will become one of the destination sites of all R/C oval racer throughout the country. The site will be multipurpose and used to help promote BRL member tracks, tour events, and sponsors. In addition to results, points standings, and race recaps you can expect to see a staff of BRL writers providing oval news, driver interviews, product write ups, set-up tips and a unique behind the scenes articles on all the happening of the BRL. We have a temporary page posted now with the tour schedule. The full site should be and running by the end of September.

We still have a lot of work to do but expect more detailed information in the coming weeks.

Look forward to seeing everyone this season. If you have any questions or comments let me know ,

I'm not all that familiar with oval racing, but why have you limited the classes to Novak and LRP brushless equipment? And same for the max. capacity of batteries to 4200mah (NiMh I'm assuming) when Lithium batteries are the future?

Sounds like a well thought out plan. A few years ago I wanted to get a 4300 brushless spec class going in our area, but it never took off. This year I think there are oval guys around doing a 4300 class, so kudos!

I would very clearly spec a motor for each class. The 13.5, 10.5 and mod structure sounds good. I don't think you can allow any room in those classes, but you might consider allowing motors other than the Novak or LRP in open class, just to placate those whose might complain. It might also help the sensorless tech grow.

You might throw in a Li-Po class also, since some of us can't afford to carry around $1000, worth of batteries and support equipment. ;)

Aren't 4 and 5 minute races a little short for brushless classes with 4200 mah batteries?

Right now guys competing in oval are set up to run 4 cell 4200's and would have to go out and purchase batteries and chargers just for this series if lipos were allowed. Other motors and speed controls could be allowed but would have to be submitted by next month to be considered.

Aren't 4 and 5 minute races a little short for brushless classes with 4200 mah batteries? 4 minutes is standard for oval. An extra minute is added because they are brushless. Remember when you are running oval your running mostly flat out.

Hi Sonny,

Castle Creations is interested in helping out, sponsoring, and being involved in general with the BRL.

Obvious question aside, are there plans to allow lipo in the near future?

no company makes a lipo battery that is near the 5 volt mark as our nihm cells are, if some company would we would try them in a heart beat

Why can't it just be bumped up to 7.4v? The setups will run more efficiently that way...

The A123 Li-ion 2s packs are 6.6 volts.

Hi Sonny,

Would still like to help/sponsor - can you tell me how to get started?

You mentioned motors and ESC's could still be approved - what's the process exactly?
