Hello all. I left RC modeling in 1995 and sold all of my equipment at that time. I am now retired and I want to get back into the hobby.
I was amazed after visiting numerous websites at the changes that have taken place in the past 11 years with radios, aircraft ( ARF, RTF & kits or lack of) and engines.
Anyway, I would like an opinion(s) on the most reliable radio to buy, Futaba, JR or Airtronics. Also, should I go FM or PCM and why?
Thanks for any info that you may offer,
Birman

Hello Birman,
Personally, I fly with a Hitec Optic six channel transmitter with the Spectra module. My choice of Hitec was based on exceptional customer support when needed. As far as the major brands of equipment, they all seem to work as advertised with very few problems. I would tend to shop price and features based on your intended application. As far as the FM vs PCM, the only applications that seem to benefit from PCM are helicopters and large models with ignition systems on the engines. For the typical electric or glow model, FM is totally adequate. Many of the transmitters can switch from one mode to the other, so that the choice is more in the receiver. Maybe someone else will kick in with more details. or a different experience.

I would agree with Dave,
I have Hitec and Futaba radios and find them quite good. I hear the same for JR and Airtronics. I believe JR has the longest warranty and Futaba the shortest. There are other brands too.
Polk and Spektrum come to mind.
If you tell us a little more about your goals, what you plan to fly, maybe we can make some recommendations.

Thanks guys. I got the best deal on a Futaba 7CAP so that's what I went for.

Excellent choice! Now, what do you plane to fly with it?

Hello Aeajr. Thanks for your interest. Actually I haven't been airborne yet. With starting over,I've had to buy all new equipment and that takes awhile. I just purchased a Spektrum DX7 radio yesterday. I will begin building a BTE Venture 60 shortly after Christmas.
Happy holidays to you,
