View Full Version : Give me some advice, brushless guys...

I made a thread a while back regarding my overheating novak 5.5r and the shattered rotor. Here's my options:
1. Purchase that fancy new shiny rotor. I've read it's supposed to run cooler, but I doubt enough to make a difference.
2. Purchase a lower turn motor. I'm thinking 7.5r. Would running a lower turn motor alleviate overheating problems? I can run about 10 minutes with my lipo before it shuts down.
I really believe stadium trucks are too heavy for the 5.5r, but I'd hate to have to go back to brushed motors. What do you guys think?
Here's my specs, for those interested:
Losi xxx-t
novak gtb/5.5r
86 spur, 12-18t pinion (kept going lower hoping to fix overheating problems)
dirt hawg tires
orion 4800 lipo

This is just my opinion but I would get rid of the 5.5 and get a mamba max!!! :) :) :) :) :D :D :D

Bah, Mamba max is just the flavor of the week. I'm sure it's a great product, but every time some new manufacturer enters the arena, everyone seems to jump on the bandwagon. People did it when Novak came out with the GTB/velociti line, and with the neo/reedy stuff. At this point, I'm looking at $30 for a new rotor, or $70 for a new motor. I'd have to spend a couple hundred to convert to a Mamba system, and I'd rather not make that investment.

Mike, get a 6.5 and you will be set. Case closed.

Do you have much rolling resistance in your car? Personally i'd get a new rotor, and attach a fan to the end of the motor if necessary.

Go for a higher turn motor.

Agreed.....you want torque offroad. The 6.5 should be just right. Save the 5.5 and lower for onroad setups.

I have no rolling resistance whatsoever. Drivetrain is smooth as silk, and the wheels move freely.
So you guys say a 6.5 instead of the 7.5? Would just one step up in motor turns be enough?

Well....if you race it, then how big is the track? If it's a tighter, smaller track, the 7.5 will probably be more ideal (and still plenty fast I would imagine). If your track is a bit larger, with somewhat decent sized straights, then the 6.5 would probably be better.

A motor only overheats if it's overgeared, severely over geared or is over voltaged. IMO you shouldn't be limited to a turn for any vehicle. You could even run a 3.5r on 6 cells in an emaxx and it won't over heat if you can find the right size pinion. It just depends on how fast you want to go. In your case, if you couldn't get your 5.5r to run cool, there was probably something wrong with the motor.

I am running the 4.5 in my T3 and have 15/87 setup I have never thermaled once you might check you gear mesh and make sure your not binding anywhere and make sure your diff is buttery smooth. same deal with tc4 and 4.5r 23/78 setup never thermalled.if alls good there I think you may have a motor/ controller issue. peace, SK

While I have a long history using novak products and they have all been good, when it came to brushless there was no deciding for me the mamba was the only choice.Castle creations is only NEW to cars ask any RC pilot about Castle Creations products you will find they are time tested proven products. On the topic I agree go with the higher turn motor for your novak system.

It will be the flavor for a long time to come. They are simply the most bang for the buck and more durable than any other company in the market. Their customer service is also among the best in the hobby.

I agree with SpEEdyBl. My SS5800 thermals under Novak's recommended gearing. Gear it lower and problem solved.

Im running two 5.5's in two of my Losi XX4's and i raced one the other day...it was seeing back to back packs for my actual qualifiers and practice. The hottest i got the motor/esc to was around 155. The manual says they can safely run around 160-180 so im plenty fine. As far as my gearing im running a 16 tooth pinion(not sure of the spur) and i think i have the fastest vehicle in a straight line at the track plus i have plenty of torque...too much to be exact :) There are people running 6.5's and Mamba setups. Ive ran Novak for a few years(Im thinking of getting another GTB/Velociti combo which would be my 6th Novak Brushless setup) The LRP/Reedy looks to be weak. I saw one running and he was having nothing but problems. He thermaled 3 times and the heat sink fell/ripped off the esc.

The Sphere I think is where the problems are... the Sphere Comp is very solid though. A couple guys I race with run it with zero issues and it runs cooler for them than the GTB.
My XX4 Mamba 7700 lipo will surely give you a run for your money. :) It's ridiculous... tires balloon the moment I get on it and it's a rocket on the straights. Has more power than I can get to hook up... and I'm afraid the poor old XX4 is gonna cry uncle if I keep abusing it like that. :D
