Best Paint Competition – September 2006
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of September and will close at Midnight (EST) on Saturday, September 30, 2006.
Restrictions: None
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Hgcolors will judge this month’s Pro Class. The amateur judge will be judged by TrickedoutGT.
Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Here is a Nitro Rustler body I did for a local customer. I use all Pactra paints, with 3M masking tape. The work took about 2.0 hours, not including drying time start to finish.
I'll post more later, this is my first attempt at the img tags, :D!

That worked awesome using Imageshack!
This is a JConcepts illuzion for the SP2, again, Pactra and 3M tape. I added small ghosts and graphite effect under a metal flake blue that is "tearing" away.
Thanks, :D, Jim

bspate - looks great for a first paint job! Are the flames painted on or decals? I notice that they have pinstripes, impressive for a first-timer.
Next time, put the truck in the sunlight, with the light coming from behind you as you take the pic. The colors will pop and you will get a much better looking pic.
Nice Solistice too.

Thanks for the comments and the suggestion. I will try and get a better picture of it in the sunlight and post it. The flames were vinyl masks that already had an extra stripe cut in them so it made it easier to remove and paint the next color. The details are not that great up close, but I hope to do better next time. :D

hello guys, i'll be judjing this month for the pro category so i'm expecting
some designs that will blow me away. a little something about myself,
i've been painting lexan body shells since way back 1978 during my
slot car days. i paint just for my personal use, and not for profit. i started
painting r/c's just last 2000 and i've painted over 100 shells since then.
i hope i can see new designs other than the tribal and flame which i
usually encounter. you're pros, so i expect something creative. let
your imagination go beyond the bounds of just painting. by the way,
to those entering the pro class, can you at least have them mounted or
atop of chassis so i can see its entirety? to me, this is very important,
and a couple of shots of both sides, please. thanks, i hope i didn't
offend anybody with this jesture. good luck to you all !!!!

OK..I have a body to paint, but here's the dilemma...
I got this body (CP 2.0 for Revo 3.3) by trading it for some stuff, with the intention of running it on my truck (E-Maxx). Thing is, it's way too long for my intents and purposes (wanted the CP for the Revo 2.5)
So technically, I didnt get this body to sell (which would put me in the pro class), but I wont have a use for it, and really wont have much of a choice to sell it...
so what class should I enter it in?
Buggyracer28

You can still paint it and sell it. You didnt technically sell it to "someone" specifically.

hopefully maybe we will get some more painters n entries in here, hehe!but seriously its a awesoem thing that RCCA has done n i hope they continue to do it!
again congrats TK!

They probably would have included the amatuer winner as well if it had been a better pick. That was the month I won and the pick was of the body off the truck on my kitchen floor, not exactly magazine material there. So remember if we want our winners in the mag, we need to put in good, quality pics.

I think we should stick to 3 entries per person, but the judge should select one of these for the top 10.. in other words you can only expect one of your entries to make it into the top 10, unless there aren't enough entries that month...

Mab, contact Paul Onorato and continue where I left off. I'm sure he'll be looking for more stuff for his section of the magazine. RCCA has finally opened up and is selecting winners for publication (see Todd Kerby's skull T4).
For judging, make it about helping people, not selecting one work out of three. People are trying to improve with each paint job. Good judging of each paint job helps them improve as a painter. Many painters care little of the ranking, but all of them care about getting feedback.
hijacker
10-04-2006, 07:16 PM
I agree with Piggy, I think that the rules as they are now are fine. If I only got to enter 1 entry a month and we stick to the rule that the body has to be recently painted, then I would have bodies I could never enter because they would become too old. If I enter more than 1, I know that only 1 is going to win and the others won't, but I do like to show them off and get comments from people.

I got busy last night and obviously didnt get a chance to judge. I cant see all the images here at work so tonight it will get judged. I promise!
Keep the suggestions coming. I have contacted Paul, but have not been able to start an on going dialog. I will continue to try.

well, i think that going with some of the others, you can enter more than one body, but the best one out of the 3 will be picked to be judged, as opposed to all 3 being eligible. That would give all participants a better chance at placement. Psychological or not, people like to see if they place, or 20th, just so they have an idea. I know it would be a pain, but breaking it down a touch further as well... rattlecan pro, rattlecan amatuer, airbrush amatuer, airbrush pro. It wont be hard to tell who used an airbrush, and who didnt in my opinion. Granted, that might make things a bit more confusing, maybe not...but just an idea. Its still only 4 classes. It also opens up the door to many novices who dont compete due to that reason.
again, just an idea.

So.............. Dang! Timmy got a good deal. You just lost about 20 bucks on the deal and are still not a Pro. Lol
Anyway, mabman invented this comp so we painters could learn from each other and see what other painters think. Piggy added Pro and amateur classes, so the new painter, can user, or a guy painting 2 or 3 a year can have a chance to win. The competition is fears in both classes and that makes the win sweet. If you brake it up into 4 classes and only one work gets picked for judging and so on, you'll eliminate a lot of the competition and people will *@)*$&^ about that for sure. Bottom line is, you want to win, step it up! Your one of the few people who fall into either class, so enter amateur if you're only doing rattlecan jobs. Win 2, get an AB, and go Pro! :)

I didnt forget about all of you, in fact quite the opposite. I spent a considerable portion of my night working on the judging. At around 10:30 I realised that I was being cynical and tired so i called it a night in the name of quality and fair judging and feedback comments. In the comments I am trying to point out the steps painters can take to get to the next level and become a pro painter, or be more happy with their own results.
Please be patient. I will also put up the new contest right after I post the results.

Paint - Rattle cans - Daytona yello, Grape pearl, Indy Silver
Masks - 3m paint mask tape
Class - uber-amateur
Design: 4
Execution: 2

This body is a great start as a lessons learned (it looks a heck of a lot better than my first few). When laying down the tape start at one end and carefully press down the edges with your fingernail or a credit card. The first 2 or 3 coats of paint should be a mist, dont worry about any coverage at all, your just trying to seal the tape edges. The design looks good, for your next body I challange you to do the same layout, but work on the mask lines and pick a new technique and add it. :teacher:

Looks good, but is overshadowed by fancier designs. Also the mask lines around the hood need to be straightened out a bit.

This body turned out better than the other one. It looks like you pushed the mask down a little better and misted the paint for the first few coats. Again I challange you to add one more level of difficulty.

This looks good, but it is too simple. Your mask lines follow the contours of the body very well, now go out there and add more to your next body!

While your pinstripes aren’t evenly spaced, and you have some paint bleeding this is a perfect example of needing just a little more practice and patience. The looks good, but the scallops aren’t sharp enough and don’t flow very well with the contours of the body. When spraying your first coat of paint try to do so very lightly. Don’t try to cover the whole thing in 3 coats, the first 2 should be nothing more than a mist, then start coming in and filling in the color. The one thing to avoid is pools of paint. If an area starts looking really wet then move to another part of the car. Also a hair drier helps to speed up the process between coats.

Ghost flames are a subtle way to change up a normally boring single color paint scheme. This came out very well, but they look better with some fade to the base color at the base of the flames, not just one color. Challange yourself to come up with some original flame designs and your work will improve drastically.

I need a magnifine glass to see the design on the front of that huge body! You have the basic skills (I cant see any bleeds) its time you sit down and learn how to cut your own masks or at least scale up the ones you have so they flow over the body better. Welcome to the site!

I like this body a lot. You have a lot going on and you fill up the entire body. The rips aren’t professional looking, but you get points for trying. I also like the double flames up front. Next time I challenge you to come up with all your own designs and keep working on that rip!

Read my critique of civicwil’s drip body. I have to give you the nod though because you added a little more to the design. At first I didn’t like the flames, but then it occurred to me that they are coming from the heat sink, which is a nice touch. Next time you do the marble, add more of the initial color, also you have a little bleeding.

These drips look awesome. The variation of the color and the high points in te drips looks perfect, but they are lacking a shadow which ruins the 3d effect a little. IMO the drips are too symetrical, the design appears to be very lifelike and natural flowing, but you have the pattern twice. if your going for a 3d look I believe that the design should be assymetric, but this did not penalize you

What happened to the pin stripes on the front of the body? This looks awesome except for that detail. The shadows look great and the flames flow well. It would be cool to see some color variation in the flames themselves. A little work and your a pro!

There is a lot going on with this body and it works! The colors look good and the design flows over the body well. The two things you need to work on is your airbrush skills (it just takes practice) and watch where you paint the shadows. There is too much shadow on the top of the wedge on the sides of the car. Try cutting out a piece of poster board in the shape you want and hold it near a lamp and move it around above a white piece of paper until you like the angle of light, then take note of what the shadow looks like. Try to mimic that look. The idea is to make it look like you did not paint a shadow at all, when done correctly our eyes dont notice the shadow because everything we see has a shadow, but the end result looks awesome.

This design grabbed my eye right away, but after some staring it looks like the design runs into itself in odd places, and the side overlapping graphic doesnt seem to fit with the rest of the body. The masking and colors look great especially for a 1/18 body. Try to use the lines of the body to lay out the shape of the graphics. These seem to be layed down where ever they fit.

This body looks awesome! The marble turned out great, the pin stripes are even and clean, but I had to pick a winner, and I thought the large mass on top needed something more. It needed to be another color or something. Keep in mind that this critique spawns from having to pick a winner. Great job!

If you use a rattlecan your not a pro! Mabman, make that a man law! :D Lol
yup, according to the rules, I am. Besides, I've gotten up there with some of the bodies I've painted... I might only use cans, but I can still do most of the fades, marble, carbon, rips, effects y'all do, but I can do really fine faded lines unless I cut them out or stencil it. But it wont ever compare to the airbrush stuff y'all do. NICE! I actually love trying to figure a way on how to do your stuff with just cans.

I like z man n all, and a 3rd rattle can class is up to mabman, but I would stick to the 2. My point was pro's don't use rattle cans. If you want the challenge of entering the pro competition with a can, I think that's cool.
I painted my first custom body with a can. I did a good job but the scheme had a lot of fades in it and I hated the fades. Sure, it looks good in PICS, but a can won't atomize enough for a good fade, so I set off for Dad's house to dig up that old airbrush he bought me when I was a kid.

i agree with Ad,it should be only 2 classes,if u make it into 4 classes (add 2 classes,1 for pro can n 1 for amuture can),its gonna get soo drawn out n what happens if lil timmy is the only one who enters the amauture rattle can part....i like the way it is now.maybe the guy who uses the rattle can mite beat somebody with a airbrush but this should inspire someone to get better.
i started out with a 5 buck single action airbrush not to long agao n got a double action a/b.u can get a cheap compressor from home depot for 99 bucks!u can get single action airbrushes off ebay or harbor freight.

yeah... 2 classes is fine.
OH...and it's not that I cant get an airbrush, or use one... I just dont like to or want to. The better the paint job, the more you have to charge. I keep it simple so I dont have to charge LOTS of cash for painting, that way getting more volume of sales. :D
Also: I find that the regular color paints dont atomize well enough for a good fade, BUT the flourescents do. :D

you're all out to get me, i know it!!!
hahahaha,....i use an airbrush, although my good one died, so everything has been with a $5 harbor frieght plastic single action. I look back, maybe we dont need another pro class, but some of the ametuer jobs really make me wonder why they are in that class. goes back to being honest with yourself...i could have stayed ametuer and kept quiet about selling my first body, but thats not me. now, my 2nd and 3rd sales are being shot, and even tho they are nothign fancy, its still a paid for job, so my pro status sticks.
Almuma, i have seen what you can do with cans, and i am very impressed, make sure you include "all can" in your paint description, because i think that should be taken into consideration at least when judging.

Victoryrc - you entered your body (very nice by the way) in the September competition which ended in september. You need to enter in the current month's competition. However, October's comp is halloween themed, so I am not sure your paintjob would qualify. You may want to save it until November, but definitely enter your work, it looks like you really do a great job!
