hey i just got this 32 inch v hull off ebay for 120 bucks. fine design 9xl brushless motor flex coupler and nice aluminum hardware with sharpened octura prop . It also came with a tx and rx which are junk and ill be using my futaba stuff.I have to repaint it and make sure it seals well and I need an ESC and any suggestions on esc and battery setups ? What do you think the most cells I can throw at that motor? Thanks Also the water cooling looks a lil weak does any 1 know where to get the jackets for the motor ? I thought i saw a jaket that covers the whole motor waterproofing it ?

you can get the water cooling jacket and esc here:
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/

you'll need some WD-40 to install the jacket. i would recommend the castle barracuda 80 amp controller. i've had one for almost 2 years and can't think of a single bad thing to say about it. it looks to me like the previous owner might have used that boat for P-offshore, judging by the hardware set up. ( "P" would be 12 cells, just in case you're not familiar with the FE classes.) for cells, the IB4200's available from offshoreelectrics will probably ge good too. they are reasonably priced, and good performers. i, and some other guys in my club, have the 4200's in some of our boats and they are very good cells. what kind of charger do you have? also, what kind of prop came with the boat?
you will probably want to get an additional drive shaft too, and you'll need some new connectors for the motor.

With that 9XL you will not want to run more then 12 cells. That is a pretty hot setup for direct drive in a mono that size, start with smaller props like an x438 to m440. Watch the heat carefully, watercooling the ESC is a good idea. It will be easy to get the Bararcuda 80 warm with that motor and 12 cells, particularly if you run the 4200 packs to dump. That is a great way to ruin batteries by the way, running them too long with that setup could roast them. Check their temperature often (every minute) until you know their limits. With power comes responsibility......

If you just want to see how fast the boat will go, you can try up to 18 cells with that motor and an x439 prop, but you will not be able to run for more than one minute or so. Otherwise you will overheat the cells and the ESC. Run at your own risk, and don't say you weren't warned! ;)

what about the 125 amp barracuda

what about the 125 amp barracuda

I would prefer (in general) the "Cuda 125 to the "Cuda 80.

It just is a stronger controller overall.

You won't "need" a 125 with a X438 & 12 cells.

But later you can reuse the stronger ESC on another project.

P.S. get the water jacket from Offshoreelectrics.com.
It will cool so much better than that coil you have now.

The Castle controls seem to be very fragile in my opinion. I would go for the Schulze or the new MGM controllers. They are a bit pricey,

An alternative is the BK 9920 from Fine Design. Less costly than the Schulze or MGM, it will work great in this application as long as it is watecooled. Mine has worked very well with from 8 to 18 cells, oval and SAW applications. It is far less "fragile" than the current Castles.
