Here you can see the difference between the Bruiser tires and F-350 tires. The F-350 tires measure 3.72in. (95mm) x 1.40in. (35.8mm). They're slightly larger than the ones used on the Toyota Hilux and F-150 race truck.

Here are the inner workings of the transmission. I hope you like to install e-clips! There are over 15 of them used inside. All of the gears and shafts spin on metal bushings. One ball bearing is used where the threaded portion of the top shaft exits the transmission. Make sure you use the included lube.

A dual disc slipper clutch protects the drive train from any sudden shock. It’s fully adjustable and the adjusting nut can be accessed with the tranny installed in the truck. Sorry for the bad photo; I’m an editor not a photographer.

I took the tranny out of my Bruiser (top) so you can see how it compares to the F-350 tranny. The F-350 tranny is taller and longer than the one of the Bruiser. The gears in the rear, center, and front of the tranny are protected by molded plastic covers.

Here’s a look inside the molded plastic axle housing. The diff is a typical Tamiya bevel gear unit and is locked by installing a pin in the tapered portion of the housing. The pin passes through the shaft inside and prevents it from rotating. Just like the transmission everything is supported by bronze bushings so use the included lube on everything. Sorry for the blurry photo.
KevinH
09-10-2006, 06:24 PM
Here you can see the access hole in the plastic housing for the diff locking pin. A silver cover enhances the look of the axle and keeps dirt out of the hole

Kev, just curious, do you plan to blaze this truck down the line after the review and testing of it. Kinda like what you did with this truck that you built?
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/webstat/RCCA-April1998-134.jpg
Many people on other forums have talked about you in some pretty negative ways after what you've done with this one of a kind custom that you've built and the reason still wasn't clear either, folks are suspecting that the High-Lift might go down in flames like you done with this truck. I also wanted to know if by any chance you still have the whee's off of this truck. I know they were See's wheels for the blackfoot and was wondering if you still have them and would be willing to sell em to me if they are in decent shape after you burnt this truck. Whatever you do try not to do the same to the High-Lift.

HA I couldnt help but think the same thing when I saw a gas can with a propane torch next to a Bruiser  I have a gut feeling that wasnt by accident  but whatever..if I say anything more itll just get deleted like the other thread on the custom crew cab itself, that magically went away when they couldnt handle the heat.
Regardless of who is building it, the truck looks good, Artie and I have pre ordered ours with RPP and will have them soon as they are released.

I said it before and I'll say it again.
I wasn't a Bruiser.
The axles are fine and ready to be used in another project.
It was a truck that I built out of solder, brass, and old electronics. Nothing of value was lost.
That's all I'm going to say about the "Bruiser". This Thread is about the F-350. If you want to talk about the "Bruiser" that's fine but please use another thread to do so.

"Meaty" comes to mind when looking at that. Tamiya always seems to add that extra "oomph" if you will, to their stuff. Some hard core guys say it adds too much weight, but i myself love the added beef they put into them.
ANYWAY..........Kevin, it looks awesome. I like the fact you can lock either diff up, or both. general playing, lock the rear, leave the front open for turning, or lock em up for crawling...nice touch. It would be nice if the compaines would go that little bit further tho, include a engine, made from styrene, and an interior. Make the doors operational as an option on a body like that, things like that. Its so close to bridging the gap from static to rc....think "king hauler". This is the one for "wow" factor for sure.....
ok, time to shut up..lol

I think it would have been sweet if they had used a 750 can motor like the Bruiser/Mountaineer (extra horsepower). Also looks like maybe a nice replacement set of axles for the Bruiser trucks.

http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/F350/springs2.jpg
You have to assemble the springs for the truck. There’s one main spring and four other different size springs that you can add to make the springs as stiff as you want. I went with the stock setup of three springs on each leaf.

Wedico has been doing just that for years with there rigs.
I just can't wait to hear what this new MFCU sounds like for this F-350. I've heard the sound unite for the tamiya rigs and the sound on those is incredable. I hope though that tamiya offers both a gas sound unite and a diesal sound unite....turbo charged of course.
Or maybe a 2 in one so you can switch between the two. That would be sweet.
I'm thinking I'm going to have to go ahead and buy one when they come out in 14 days.

I must admit that I was disappointed that the truck has a straight c-channel chassis instead of a curvy one that is similar to the full-size truck. After getting it together I see that this one doesn’t look bad.

I'm sure they look metallic first-hand.
This build sure is going together quickly! Thanks for doing this, Kevin. At first, I thought this truck was kinda lame, and not really that important, but as I look at it, this is pretty trick. I would love to see videos of this thing in action, and the MFU working too. Is this truck being set up with functional shifting, or is it locked into a particular gear?

Ok, did some more reading. Looks nice! However I'd be concerned if that new tranny can handle "oodles" of torque from the motor.
The ultra low-speed handling would be nice but I don't have enough crawling experience to know if a regular ESC does just fine in that role.

ok, time to get :flame: for this, BUT:
some things are better left alone. With the exception of maybe a different motor, this truck screams to be the one you bring out to make people drool. I dont think i could molest it into something else so quickly.

The shocks have an internal spring and the shock shaft has o-rings with a special lube on them. They feel like an oil filled shock when assembled.

No, you're both wrong. It's for the new, yet-to-be-released Tamiya Multi-Function GPS-G MRLS (Global Positioning System Guided Multiple Rocket Launching System). It is Multi-Function because it also serves as a horn.

Hi,
for what is this silver thing with the hole in the middle of the front end of the chassis?
http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/F350/assemblefrontend.jpg
It is behind the front bumper. I think its for a winch or something like that.
It's a small metal loop. I'm pretty sure it's there for looks. My Jug2 has them too.

What do they call it in the instruction manual? Tamiya has a habit of naming everything.
(I checked the Jugg manual, it's called a "Triangular Stay", part MF14.)

Back on the shifting issue, I plan to use a standard pistol radio with ch3 switch (Hitec CRX). I intend to rig up a system that will shift into gear 3 only when you push the switch AND have full brake on, or something similar. Without full brake, the button will give you 2nd.
I don't really want to go over to a stick radio or stop using my CRX. Anyone have any tried and tested solutions for this?
I think its worth a shot to try.

They look to be the same as far as their makup but the length of the F-350's shafts are shorter than the ones used on the TXT-1. Which is a fine truck if I say so myself. And yes, our mag does kick bad rearend.

Here’s a shot of the radio. Yes it may say skysport and have an airplane on it but trust me, you can get it on a 75mAh frequency. I picked up a 4-channel radio with the future of the truck in mind. I plan on installing the multifunction unit and I assume that it requires a 4-channel radio and I have a few mods that will require an extra servo or two once the truck is finished.

I’ve been a busy bee tonight. I finished the chassis and started painting some body parts. If you’re looking for driving impressions you’re going to have to wait a while. I have to get all the studio photos done and finish the body before I run it. Here are some photos for you.
http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/f350/steering.jpg
I went with the two wheel steering on my truck. A series of linkages connect the servo to the hubs
http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/f350/batteryspring.jpg
The battery is accessed by lifting this spring loaded doodad.
http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/f350/radiotray.jpg
The radio tray is rather big. I assume that it’s that big to give you a place to mount the optional multi function unit.
http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/f350/finished.jpg
Here’s the completed chassis. This truck isn’t hard to build but set aside some time to get it completed. I had fun building it and I’m sure anyone who buys this truck will too.
http://209.2.68.15:8011/pics/f350/mirrors.jpg
Now on to the body. Here are the mirrors with a coat of black paint. I also painted the front and rear bumpers but you can’t see that detail very well in the photos. I have filler on the main body and I will be starting the paint on that soon.

with that radio is the turning on the right side stick and forward and reverse on the left side. i remember using a 4 channel once on a bruiser and I couldnt get the feel for it becuase you had to drive and steer with the same stick I didnt like that........is that what you gotta do too on this one?

Jock, you can use any channel for any function really. You could steer with the vertical axis of the left stick if you were so inclined (and sadistic).
My question for the Skysport is to whether the left stick's vertical axis is spring centered, or ratcheted.

Take a look at Thunder Tech Racing for your steering fix. As for the light bar you may want to look at RAM products. They have some lights that may work for you. On one of the Clods that I had, I simply drilled out the screw hole and installed small bulbs in the stock light bar then drilled out and glued on the light covers.

Here’s a shot of my truck. It’s finished and I’m in love. I think I need a few more of these. You can also see my truck on the Tamiya USA site.

Good work, Kevin!! The paint looks flawless, very shiny, very clear. It came together very well, and going with a brighter color sets it off.
Initially, the Bruiser looks noticeably bigger, but I think it comes down to wheels, tires, and suspension lift. Am I right?

Yeah, your right. The tires and suspension are the big difference in size. I'm glad you noticed the paint. I spent a lot of hours getting it to a glass like shine.

Wow, looks like one of those pics that the manufactures take. Almost looks like someone from a magazine took it...oh wait, someone from a mag did take it! Looks awesome. The Bruiser looks killer too, but I'm in love with the side mirrors on the High Lift! Nice work!

Weird, it looks like there are no rear springs and there is a link bar. Must be just the angle of the pic.
Checking closer it's the rear tie-rod that I see, just hard to see the rear spring :-) And here I thought Kevin had the "Secret 4-link kit".

seeing the trucks side by side, it looks like the body of the ford is more like 1/12 scale or so.... kinda like the clod having a 1/12 scale body too but calling it a 1/10

I am picking mine up tomorrow. I really hope it comes together well.
Question, how beefy is the drivetrain? I have an HV Maxx motor I want to run on 4S in mine and I wanted to know your thoughts on wether or not it will handle the load? I am not looking for alot of speed on mine, however I already have that motor/ESC from another project sitting in a drawer and ALOT of lipo cells from my helis. Also, the slipper clutch should protect the drivetrain (I have no problem making any motor adaptor in my shop).
What was the most difficult part of the build and what was the most rewarding part?

Since the truck is so new I can't really tell you how strong the drivetrain is. It was designed with a stock motor so I would assume that it wouldn't be able to handle a modified for very long before blowing up.
I think the most difficult part of the build was the tranny. You want to pay attention to the manual when building it so you don't have to take it apart like I had to after the truck was built. I would say that the body was the most rewarding part. The truck is nothing with out it and if done right, it looks like a real truck.

I picked my truck up from the LHS today (didn't know they were open). :)
Anyway, it sure looks like the drivetrain should handle some power other than the transfer gears (lower gears that are in what would be the transfer case or lower portion of the 3 speed). Those seem to be the weak link. Anyway, I have no brushed ESCs. I run all brushless. So, I will run a brushless/lithium setup and set the throttle end point down to 40% or so and adjust the slipper to save the drivetrain. It seems odd that Tamiya would make a seemingly fragile driveline. The box, manual, and misc parts box all warn "Do not run any motor other than the 540 motor included or damage could result". I trust they know what they are talking about. So, I will go easy on it.
I am happy with the quality of the kit. Of course, this is Tamiya. They ALWAYS have good quality. Everything looks top notch in the detail department. You know, it is funny, I am so used to looking at typical RC trucks that have oversized tires (way out of scale) that these slightly oversize tires look soooo tiny! I almost laughed when I took them out of the box.
At any rate, there are a TON of tiny parts in this kit. It should take a while to build, which is of course the fun part! :D

The yota body on the Bruisers & Mounty's are wider then the Clod & Jugg. If the Clod body was just a tiny bit wider and longer or just all out around the size and specs of the yota's are then it would look awesome on a Bruiser/Mounty chassy. I mean don't get me wrong either on this but i have seen many Bruisers/Mounty's with Clod bodies topping em and they do look good but just a small bit larger and it'd look even better.

You're looking at about $650 to build a truck like mine. I have run it and it a great truck. Lots of fun. Yes I have the stock motor in it. I really don't feel that you need any more than that in the F-350.

You really don't. I put a 19T speed Gem in mine and it's useless. Keep with the stock motor and get a reletively inexpensive speed control and your good to go. I did however replace all the bushings with bearings. Looking foward to the article Kev.

I am about half way through the build on mine. Really nice detail, I must say. :)
I am planning an all black color scheme on mine. Rather than paint the wheels black, I did some fiddling around with other car stuff I had lying around and found that 10th scale touring car wheels with 3mm offset are a direct fit for the 350 tires. So, I am running a set of black HPI wheels. That should look cool with a black body.
Also, I think I have a really simple 4 link setup figured out. I will do some research on it and let you guys know.

On the last page a few questions were asked about the climbing ability and articulation for scale crawling. The issue I see more than anything is the play in the transmission. The 3 speed has ALOT of slop in it due to the nature of the transmission type. For crawling, a slop free drivetrain is VERY desireable.
Also, I asked the question earlier about the use of a powerful motor. I noticed that the drivetrain looks plenty tough enough to handle quite a bit of power except for one area, 2nd gear. In 1st and 3rd gears, the shift cogs are fully inserted into their mating gears. However, in second gear, the extended cogs to do not fully engage into the gear slots related to them. So, the long engagement cogs have a large bending load inparted to them. That looks to be the only weak link to the drive train from what I can see. Also, it is a good thing this truck has a slipper clutch because of the weight. On a lighter vehicle, wheel spin takes up alot of load. However, the 350 is so heavy that the tires will rarely spin. So, the driveline needs a slipper to help it survive (I like the slipper design, by the way).
What I plan to do is run a Novak brushless motor/ESC setup in mine. I already have that setup and I do not want to buy a new ESC for the stock motor. I will soften the slipper a bit and set the throttle down a bit to reduce the load on the tranny. Beyond that, I will make sure I do not put too much power through second gear.

The transmission does not have a differential. So, power is evenly distributed to the axles.

I was looking at the pics on the Tamiya site for this truck and I noticed that in the axle cases, it looks like the pinion gear that meshes with the differential gear only has a bushing on one end of the shaft. Isn't this the same problem the original Juggernaut had (stripping diff gears) and they ended up giving out upgraded parts before recalling those trucks and ultimatly going with the Juggy 2?

Marvet,
I am stuck in the middle of a kitchen remodel, so my 350 is on the back burner for a while.
The tranny looks like it will take the load except for 2nd gear. The shift cogs to not fully engage in 2nd gear like they do in 1st and 3rd. I plan on adjusting the slipper a tad loose to protect the tranny with my Novak. :)
I made a 4 link setup for my truck. It is FAR smoother and more accurate than the sticky leaf springs and still looks very good.
I used stock Tamiya Dark Impact rear shocks. The spring rate tooks ideal and they are the perfect length for the stock shock towers.
