View Full Version : Gear Pitch Names

I am a little confused about how gear pitch names are used.
Here is my question.
On my MT2, converted to Electric, It once used the Nitro Engine gears, heres where I get confused. Are these called 'MOD1 Pitch' or '64 Pitch'????
Because when I went to the LHS yesterday I used the Mod1 Referance and the clerk gave me a little more than a confused look, and asked where I 'came up' with that discriptive name.  :o
So any help on this would be helpfull.
Peace and Goodwill

I believe nitro clutch bells/spurs are 32 pitch, so if you're still using the nitro spur, that's what you need.

No that is not the case, I converted to 32pitch, from the nitro setup.

I believe the MT2 as stock uses Mod1 gears, like the Savage does. Slightly bigger teeth than 32 pitch.
64 Pitch is much finer than Mod1, the teeth are even smaller than regular 1/10 pinions (48 pitch). Only really used in touring/pan cars, too weak for offroad use.

Rtsbasic, ok thank you for the info.
Now why does the LHS clerk not know what a MOD1 Pitch is????????
And I've 3 of them in 2 different stores?

Yes, the HPI MT2 is using Mod 1 gears like most other Nitros
Mod (modul) gears use metrical dividing.

i feel your pain...one shop i went to is listed as an authorized Tamiya dealer...sweet. pinions for my TB01... i get there, tell him i need 48p METRIC. He looked at me like a monkey doing a math problem. For 30 minutes, i tried to explain to him that tamiya uses metric pitch, he finally called robinson racing, because he said i had no clue what i was talking about....ahem, guess who won THAT one!
advise: find someone who deals with HPI , so they have a clue.

Heh, the guy that runs my LHS is pretty knowledgeable about nitro's, won quite a few trophies for his driving, but when I asked him if he can order mod-1 pinions to mesh with a 1/8 spur, he looked at me like an idiot - didn't know what mod1 was. At least when I asked about 32P ones for my Emaxx he had the sense to pull out a Robinson Racing catalogue :)
z-man280, funny you say that..there was a shop near where I used to live that dealt ONLY HPI, as they wasn't only an RC shop. They were completely useless, went out of business in around a year IIRC. Didn't have a clue.

I believe the whole module 1 thing is used on helicopters, I could be wrong but look. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXMGY1&P=0

Mod1 is used on a number of monster trucks. The Savage (as stated) is one of them, as is the Monster GT. All 1/8 scale buggies and truggies use mod1, so it's not a rare thing.

ok, let me do some digging here...there is probably someone else that can answer you faster, but i will do my best. You have a nitro mt2, that you converted to electric. correct? and yo uare using the stock spur gear that came with the truck, and are looking for the pinion pitch to match it up? i am assuming you went brushless as well, so what motor did you put in?
thanx,

Yes Ron,
I did convert to Brushless, with the MambaMaxx 5700 with a 3s Li-po.
Though I would like to be able to find the Gears in a Hobby Shop , such as I can get through RRP, since they can order . With out myself paying for shipping (since I'am a Cheap Bastard), But I'm open to any suggestion. I know I can get (Mod1) pinions with the required hole size from R/C Monster.
But I would like to also get the Matching Spurs as well, Since 'HPI' only sells the one size 52tooth.
So any help here would be thankful, I'm having a diffcult time finding what I need.
Peace and Goodwell.
Also I have been using a 32pitch setup, But this is at the least a poor set-up.

They have worked with Mod1 gears for years, they just didn't know it. Almost all 1/8 and some 1/10 nitro vehicles use Mod1. Some like the 1/10 losi/assoc etc use 32P. (or Mod .8 which is compatible w/32P I believe)
Erik... what vehicle?
Savage gears (and some other HPI nitros) are Mod1.... I have plastic 49 and and 52 tooth HPI gears that I have used in my BL conversions. I think they are for the Savage. If those are the proper gears for you vehicle then you should have no problems.
You can get some (relatively) cheap Mod1 pinions from Tower... made by Century for helicopters. They are $7 or so.
If this doesn't help give us mor edetails about what you need

Glassdoctor.
the vehicle is an MT2. brushless, MambaMaxx, 5700, 3s Li-Po.
I want and need some larger Spurs such as 53t, 54t, 55t, such as these. As well as the Pinions. I would like to have a full complement of combinations to use.

It appears the MT2 uses the same exact spurs as the Savage. I have modded a couple of these to use in my Jammin conversion. They are Mod1... you probably knew that. ;)
I don't know what you can do about larger spur sizes... I think the 52 is the biggest HPI makes like this. IMO just stick with that and buy some pinions. The Century pinions are available from down to 9T... and they are $7.95
Why do you need "matching" pinions? Isn't the gear mesh adjustable?
EDIT: It just clicked what the problem is... at least part of the problem anyway:) You are running the 5700 with a 3.2mm shaft... so you need Mod1 3.2mm (1/8") shaft gears. www.rcmonster.com has them in 12t-15T.
If you want more gear reduction (larger spur) you will have to raise the center diff to make room for it won't you? If you can do that, then there are other plastic gears that might work but you will have to do some serious mods and there aren't many sizes to choose from. I know there is a 62 or 63T ofna gear.

I don't think you can fit a spur bigger than 52t in the alloy gearcase you're running, it's very tight (I have the same one in my brushless MT2).
Why would you need a bigger spur anyway? You can get the 1/8" to 5mm pinion adapter I told you about for $6, then run any Mod1 5mm pinion you want, all the way down to 9T.
