View Full Version : do you like how brushless/electrics sound?

Ok, I know this may "sound" silly, but do you guys enjoy the noise or should I say lack of noise from your electric systems?
For example, I like the noise that my Novak supersport does when hooked to my xxxt tranny. :flame:
In comparison I don't get the same sounds from my mamba max (I do love it) but I wish it sounded differently. Wouldn't it be cool to have an onboard speaker and circuit hooked to the esc so you could reproduce your own sounds while you pull the trigger? It would not necessarily have to simulate the sound of nitro, why not simulate the sound of a real v8, or some futuristic sound (delorean...) maybe?
What do you guys think...
or maybe it's too late and I should go to sleep now :p

Kinda off topic, but how often do you have to rebuild your diff in your xxxt? I have to do it every dozen runs or so, since I have to keep the diff super tight so it doesn't slip under the incredible power of my Mamba Max 5700 system.

I like them whisper quiet if possible...
Losi has a new diff ring design for the xxxcr. It has two rings on eash side... I would get those and see if it helps. It's supposed to be butter smooth.

I also like my cars to be as quiet as possible. I know the motor isn't making any noise so the only noise my car is making is from friction. Less friction = more speed and more runtime.

My neighbors sure do enjoy the lack of noise. :)

I like having the car nice and quiet, although there are moments when my Savage is ripping accross a field and I'm thinking it'd be nice to have the growl of an engine in there sometimes.
It soon passes though, without the sound of an engine you can hear what the trannys doing better, and being able to run it in a lot more places is nice :)

My LMT basic 5300 sounds like a top-fuel dragster on ten cells and it still sounds good on six in my b4 and tranny's fine.

I love the sound my MM 5700 makes in my MT2, it is a High speed whirl sound, similer to a turbine sound.

i assume your running that on 3s lipo if so how hot does the motor get when your running that high a rpm?

I REALLY like the sound of that ...

I gotten it only as hot as 170f, that was when I was learning how to gear it. Now it's around 155f +-

I love the way my Dagger sounds. It's not brushless, but the twin 14T motors with the twin transmissions make an awesome whirring/turbine-like sound (slightly out of phase too) as it builds up speed. :-)

Yeh my stampede's tranny is pretty loud (all the gears are eating themselves ), makes a good noise I suppose. But at the end of the day, I guess you can't beat the sound of a nitro powered, environment harmer :D

Tamiya makes this for their 1/14 scale tractor trailer trucks. Of course, it sounds like a big diesel truck driving.

If you search hard enough on www.tamiyaclub.com, you might find a video with sound of one in action.. Pretty cool.

Maybe about the same... Usually the thrust bearing set suffers the most. There'e a heavy duty version (LOSA3018 is the part, I think) but I have not tried it yet. You could also replace the stock diff balls with ceramic ones but in my experience the diff ends up not being as smooth.
Keeping the slipper not so tight also helps but a bit loose is also not good as you can melt the plastic part that's between the slipper and the spring (It happened to me yesterday!!) So it was end of the run... that kinda sucked :(

Rufus,
I have the heavy duty thrust bearing, and each grooved washer it at least twice as thick as the stock version, and the bearings ride in a copper carrier. I recommend them 100%.
I was actually having a problem with the plastic spacer between the slipper shaft bearing and slipper shaft tranny gear melting and seizing the bearing to the tranmsission case, destroying the bearing and case with it. I placed an axle shim between the bearing and the spacer, and it seemed to fix the problem.
My slipper heats up really quickly if I don't keep it pretty tight. I downloaded the xxx-cr manual to get the part numbers for the new style diff.
Outdrive set: LOSA3038
Diff rings w/ copper shims: LOSA3039
I'm going to go ahead and give this a try in a week or so, if the weather ever dries up. It's rained for almost a week straight here in Michigan.

You are talking about part LOSA3033 right? Are you running the stock metal slipper shaft tranny gear or the aluminum one? I'm running the aluminum one and have not had that problem yet (in fact, I think that LOSA3033 is not needed when you install the aluminum one, but I cannot recall correctly, I would have to take a close look again...)
Anyway, nice tip... I bet someone will be saved from destroying their case :)

That would really be interesting to see... where did you get that tip? would the stock diff balls work with the new diff? I see a different part number for those in the xxx-cr exploded view
Good luck trying them out, I really hope its an improvement... And let me know, I was just about to order some parts...
Happy R/Cing :D

Rufus,
Yes, the tranny case (Losa3033) comes with two plastic spacers of different thicknesses. The thinner one is required to remove play with the top shaft (Losa9930 is the part I have, it's all one piece). Without the axle shim, I think the friction between the plastic spacer and the metal shield/outer race on the bearing was too much for it. I suppose you could just bevel the plastic spacer and solve the problem, but that sounds too much like work.
Regarding the new style differential, I read about it in a couple different reviews of the xxx-cr. The shims allow the rings to slip instead of the diff balls, so you don't score the face of the balls which would lead to a gritty feeling. For some reason, Losi went back to the original xx/xxx tranny, instead of the mf2/bk2 one. The only difference between the xx/xxx diff and the xxx-cr diff are the outdrives and and diff rings/shims. The rest of the hardware is identical, diff balls, diff screw, etc.

remember those little wind toys that kids sometimes blow at parties? (not horns) the ones making a high pitched turbine like sound that goes higher and louder as more air gets in... I bet that putting one of these in an r/c would be cool

my mamba 25 in my 18b sounds like a jet when I get up to fullrpms, yay for weekly diff builds and supersmooth tranny's!!! :D
