View Full Version : Tamiya F350 Hi Lift 4X4X4--Bruiser reborn?

It is a kit. No there will not be a RTR of it's first release. The rails are actually similar to the ones used on Tamiya's Tractor Trucks. Oh and yes you can already pre order them at a local hobby shop that carries or stocks or can bring in Tamiya. Also the release date is somewhere around mid or late August.

Brushless motor would be too fast for the transmission on truck to handle, whole drivetrain wouldn't be able to cope with the high speeds. On the other hands if you are looking at or thinking of popping in one of the soon to be released Novak crawler brushless systems, they yeah there should be no problem for such application for this truck. This truck is really built for scaleness and scale driving kinda and really wouldn't be right to see one with a mod motor in it trying to race a few trucks/cars at a track or anything like that.

While I agree that this truck is not meant to go fast, so a brushless motor is probably not the ideal setup, I have seen people put sensorless brushless system on those 3-speed tranny and it holds up fine.. they are stronger than people expect.. these "new" 3-speed tranny (found on the semi, not the old old one from Hilux / Bruiser / etc.) probably got quite a bit of new improvements on them..
But yeah, I would not put a BL system on this truck... :)

Good news that the frame will be metal.. (just anodized / powdercoated black?)
Bad news: Price (at least it is now somewhat justified due to the metal frame, sheesh!), and what's up with the nice looking shocks (aluminum, nice!) BUT they are friction shocks?!?!?! Not oil shocks?! That's so wrong.... I can't believe Tamiya did that.... hate the fact that one will have to throw away those nice looking shocks in order to get some "hopup" oil shocks.. if you are gonna make them as throw away, might as well save some money just give us some cheap friction shocks made of plastic, not the nice aluminum ones!! Argh!!

WHOA!!! lots of info, got excited again for its release. But, wow, lots of metal bearings to be replaced: 35pcs x 1150, 4pcs x 1260, 2pcs x 850 size. Need to save up for the added cost.
Jock, just replace the shocks with the stock tlts.
cfjan
08-08-2006, 11:18 PM
Yeah, but my point was that if they are gonna sell fancy hop-ups shocks for it, they shouldn't waste money on making some anodized aluminum (cost money!) shocks just to be throw away...
They should instead just either give us the good shocks, or give us the plastic one (and pass the saving to us)...
Atreyu
08-09-2006, 02:33 AM
Fully agree with that idea.
For the price, they should go with full ball bearings and oils shock indeed.
But hey, this is Tamiya and they usually earn more bucks with hop-ups than with the kits themselves...
Anyway, I think Santa is definetelly gonna brinī me one :)

I still think that they will offer optional real oil shocks.. (just guessing..)
Yeah, different grease for different friction.. reminds me of their designs from 20+ yrs ago (Hornet / Grasshopper) where you would put in 1 o-ring for "soft" and 2 o-rings for "hard" setting... :D

I take it that you are talking about the frame rails. If so, yes they are steel. Trust me; I could knock out Paul with them. These suckers are heavy. It does refer to them as steel on the box as well.

You can buy at your LHS, Tower, E-bay, many places, just look and you will find them. Just know they are not available until the 25th, Kevin works for RCCA so that is why he has one early.
Why did you ask if he is doing an online build when the link right above your post states that??

the kit comes with one(1) bearing...why?,. dont know..anyway, you will need the following:

4- 6x12
2- 5x8
1- 5x10

The one bearing supports the input shaft and I assume that they used a bearing instead of a bushing because the bearing is subjected to a lot of pressure and a bushing would wear rather quickly. And then you'll see a blown up tranny.

About 12-15 mph which is plenty fast, no need to make it faster. It's a scale truck that is meant to be scale driven, rock climbing, mud, trails, it is not a touring car
BillH
09-25-2006, 09:05 PM
I agree but for mud hole you need some good speed. I dont think the novak crawler would make it faster but I could be wrong. I believe it is a 27 or less turn.

the crawler I think is 18.5 some weird turn, but brushless does make it faster slightly dont it? I mean a 4 turn brushless is faster than a 4 brushed? just curious since I dont know...

Normally I would agree But Novaks new Super Sport 13.5 brushless has the same lap times as a 27t stock motor so I would think the 18.5t crawler would be more like a lathe motor (higher turn)."The Super Sport 13.5 Stock Brushless Motor (#3413) performs nearly identical lap times as a 27-turn racing stock brushed motor" (from Novaks web site)

ya its slow but tons of torque i put 2.2 moab tires revolver rims because it just sits to low the diff hangs super low and some ruber tubing works great for a body lift so much torque still spins the 2.2 so glue the tires you wont need a brushless or crawler setup it crawls beauitifully first gear tops out at five mph or so second gear is ten mph third is 15 ill post pics soon as get a camera

They are standard 1.9 wheels for the stock tires with 12mm hexes, so any touring car rim will work, as for 2.2's a small body or suspension lift will be needed to avoid the "rub"

you only need the 4ch if you plan to use the multi-function unit and for shifting gears, and four wheels steering. (you can use a Traxxas 3ch Tq3 with a toggle switch for that)

umm...its more of a "scale detail" kind of truck...incase you didnt notice...lol. it was definitely NOT built for racing! lol.
scale pulling truck? for pulling competitions? you might have some fun with it and a homemade sled but i cant see this truck in a competition. there are some beasty pullers out there, and this isnt really made for that.
it would look cool as a "fake" puller though. and i'd imagine it would pull pretty heavy loads. it has a low-gear right?

I bought full bearings for it, a light kit, speed gem 19T motor, futaba speed control(I forget exactly what model, I'll check when I get home tonight) and the futaba 4YF radio (which is totaly badarse may I add) I won't go into detail about the build since there are a few online builds going on. But I will say that I love Tamyia Kits. So much fun to build. Totaly worth the 700.00 beans I spent yesterday on the kit and all the other extras. I only wish they would find a way to affordably include bearing with their kits. This is (so far) one of the smoothest builds I've ever tackled. I Plan to paint the body metallic burgundy with Dk.grey trim in a classic sophiticated two tone sceme.
PS: This is not a monster truck. Can we move this thread to the electric off road section?

I still have alot of work to do. I gotta get the electronics and steering linkages dialed. There is ALOT of body work to do still also. I have to install the light kit and I'm thinking about making the bed function off of the radio (hydraulics :D )
I have a radio question. I'm using the Futabe 4YF, and I want the throttle stick to spring back like the steering stick. Only when I opened the radio, it doesn't have a spring inside and I didn't see a mount for one like on the steering side. Has anyone tried to do this?

OK steering is dialed and I took it out for a test run and it's FUN AS HECK!! It's not very fast...but FUN AS HECK!!! The 4 wheel steering is completley nuts. I can't wait till the body is finished. I'm hoping to have it done by tonight but we'll see.

I'm running two leafs, no springs in the shocks.
The wheels are aluminum touring car wheels I picked up from ebay, under $25 shipped for all four!

Birdy...lookin sharp man!! that trailor looks hot too!
I'm running 3 leafs and springs. It's stiff, but I have fun driving it like that ;)
I got board waiting for paint to dry. So I built a, sorta crude bed lift. I cut a piece of red weave carbon fiber and screwed it into a servo horn. Then used two fiberglass wheels between them to roll along the bottom of the bed as the lever moves up and down. Then I mounted the servo in the back of the chassis to the rear chassis brace. Like I said, it's crude, but it'll work ;)

I was kinda going for a rusty burgandy color. But I was off by a few shades :o I still gotta do the mirrors/wiper blades and stickers. I'm actualy planning to buy another body (as soon as they're available) and have a pro paint it for me. I can't paint to save my life. And I also plan to get one of those 10th scale trailors.

The best thing to use is Tamiya Paint, it sprays very smooth. I go over the body with 1000 grit, wash, then use the Tamiya primer, followed by 1500 grit, then lay on 3-4 coats of color, followed by 2000 grit, then 3-4 coats of Tamiya clear and you get a glass smooth finish!

yeah im gonna get 4 more......I thought I could maybe do a party order or something then again I forgot then I gotta send it out to everyone....in the end it gets expensive.
Anybody having problems with the tranny? Mine wont go in gear the spur just spins I tightened the slipper still no go. It ran fine.

You don't need any extra equipment for the 4ws. Just connect the supplied linkages.
I'm not having any tranny isuues. But it was a bit tricky building the tranny the first time. You may just need to take a look in there. Either that, or adjust the trim on the channel that controls the shifting on your transmitter.

Anybody having problems with the tranny? Mine wont go in gear the spur just spins I tightened the slipper still no go. It ran fine.
A few days ago I took my HL out to a park and noticed that it kept slipping out of second into a false neutral. I don't have a shift gate, and was thinking I was accidently moving the stick. I looked down and noticed that the trim had been pushed over to the right, enough to make the tranny slip out of gear.
The first thing to check is the trim. Secondly, remove the tie-rod to the servo, and the shift rod should auto center into 2nd gear. The springs on either end of the rod do this for you. When the servo is centered and the ball cup is placed onto the shift rod, it shouldn't move at all.
If the tranny still has a false neutral even after removing the shift linkage, then something happened inside. Some things to check are whether the bearings on the 2nd gear shift cup came out (you glued them in, right?), or a grub screw came loose, either from the motor, or the gear in the transfer case.
Good luck.
I glued the bearings with crazy glue.

Hi Birdy
It looks sharp is the trailer wide enought to fit right if not if you want to I can make a wider one to fit and you can trade that one in with no charge. I got my truck it is built just waiting to get the body back a friend is painting it for me .As soon as i get it back I will have a hitch for it I need to see if it will clear the bed.

Hi,
Looking at getting a F350 and wanting to know a few things. How durable are they? Can you put on much bigger wheels (say just bigger than the Traxxas Stampede or something on the lines of that

The truck on the trailer a few posts up has 2.2" monster truck tires/wheels on it (same tires as on my Stampede). Dunno if you could go larger or not.

I would say it's a durable car. I have given mine a throrough workout and must say that as long as you use tie wraps to connect the upper blade to the main blade you have no problems.
I did follow the manual and superglued the bearings onto the gear in the gearbox. I have had no problems with the gearbox.
When you do go swamping the drivetrain will pick up grass from the bottom of the puddles but that is not a problem.
I must say that I am impressed with the tires. They have an amazing grip, both in the mud and on wet rocks.
