Best Paint Competition – October 2006

Please read this carefully and in its entirety!! Please note new bold section at bottom.

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of October and will close at Midnight (EST) on Tuesday, October 31, 2006.

Restrictions: Halloween themes!! Get creative. Lets see some skulls, ghosts and some other slick Halloween inspired bodies. Bodies not meeting this criteria will be removed and you may enter them next month. If the inspiration isn’t obvious please give an explanation

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.

Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.

If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

TKcustoms will judge this month’s Pro Class. The amateur judge will be judged by Rskt8kr.

Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition. This month I had to judge, and that is unfair. Failure to judge or notify me PRIOR to the end of the month will result in disqualification of future events. I don’t think this will be a problem, but I don’t want people to enjoy the thrill of victory without helping out the community If something comes up at the last second let me know, I’m a reasonable person and will understand.

Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Ok, I'll go next... This is one I did for my dad.

Proline Grave Digger truck body. Shot with all Faskolor paints, bunch of different colors. Masks were all hand cut out of blue painter's tape.
Class is Pro now, I've sold some bodies and gotta follow the rules!
The headlights are actually transparent plastic cut from a tail light lens with led's behind them. They are bright enough to see them lit in the daylight.

Nice work hijacker! The colors look great and that rear body mount idea is great.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I like the paintjob but was a little disappointed in the shadowing and some of the fading. I always seem to have trouble with fasred, it just doesn't want to spray evenly and smoothly, it almost seems too thick even though I thin it tremendously.

I can't take credit for the rear body mount idea. That is my dad's revo and body (I just painted it for him), he came up with the idea for the mount. He just cut out the rear window but left those 2 tabs in place, folded them inwards and reinforced them with some spare lexan. If you'll notice on the roof just over where the driver's seat would be, there is a "door" cut into the lexan that can be opened to gain access to the engine.

That body is perfect IMO!!!! I like the fact that it's original and doesn't follow the tyical racing theme that you often see on these paint forums. I know i'm sometimes subject of those themes but this body is absolutely killer!

I guess I'll enter something in one of these paint competitions, for once :)Here's my most recent body, which by coincidence has a halloween-ish theme because of the colour.

-1/18th HPI 140mm NSX on my HPI Micro RS4
-Krylon Bright Orange (All-purpose plastics paint from Canadian Tire:D)
-No masks used
-Amateur

It's a simple one-colour paintjob, but it looks pretty sweet, IMO ;)

5th place - z-man 280 - 1/18th Associated truck - Design 5, Execution 5 Difficulty 5, Total 15.
The scarecrow is a nice idea for a Halloween theme. The barbed wire looks too stenciled and would look better with a light drop shadow to give some depth. Keep working on your color blends as well. Good job and keep practicing.

4th place - hijacker- Protoform Stratus- Design 6, Execution 6, Difficulty 6, Total 18.
The skull is nice but the rest of the body looks rushed. Work on reducing your paint and doing your shading in several light coats, you will have better control of the final result. For example the black drop shadows on the roof and sides are far darker than they should be.

3rd place - TheGeneralG - Jammin CRT - Design 6, Execution 7, Difficulty 6, Total 19.
Your design is simple and clean, a nice race scheme. As you have already stated the skull is too dark and that detracts from the final product but I applaud you for giving it a try and I know that you learned from this one.

2nd place - hijacker - Proline grave Digger - Design 7, Execution 7, Difficulty 7, Total 21.
You get extra credit for going with full on Halloween colors and a Halloween theme. As I have previously stated go easy with the black for shading or shadowing of any kind, it tens to make things muddy. Props for having the most Halloweeny entry.

1st place - Lidz - Proline Root Ripper - Design 8, Execution 9, Difficulty 8, Total 27.
Awesome job, I didn’t think anyone could make one of those things look good. Who can argue with the Rat Fink? I really like the engine and the fact that you ran the exhaust out the pipes, too cool. The only thing that I would suggest is the same thing as for the other entries, rather than black for the shading in the rat you might try a really dark green. Great Job!

Everyone did a great job and please take any of my comments as constructive criticism.

I apologize for the delay in the judging but it was out of my control. Happy painting!

Why is it that all the amature judges seem to fall of the face of the earth at the end of the comp? What gives? this thing ended at the end of october it's almost Thanksgiving already. I know judgeing isn't the easy but there weren't all that many entries.

Ok I'm done ranting, just had to get that off my chest. Now Git'er Done!

Man, this wasnt easy at all.......

3rd place- Neon_dave, NSX

design-4, execution-6, difficulty-6 total= 16

Dave, i have painted those little bodies, and making them look clean requires the key ingredient in painting- patience. I couldnt go too high due to this being a theme month, but i am diggin' that color. Keep it up, i see good things coming from you!

2nd place- dyslexic-crowd pleazer

design-7, execution-8, difficulty-7 total= 22

This is where i had a hard time, you have so many things involved on this body..the ghosts, the marbling, skull, the overall design, so well done. The pinstriping set it off, and killed it a bit due to being a bit un-uniform. I look at the time you put into it, and its easy to see you worked hard. Well done!

1st place gone-wheelin , protoform charger

design-8, execution-8, difficulty-8 total=24

what can i say? you practiced until you nailed it. True fire is hard to lay, and yours looks great. I think you may have put a bit too much on the top, needed a bit more down the sides, so thats why i scored you a touch down,..but i have to tell ya, step on up with the big boys, you definetly have the skills to compete. the last photo actually looks like its on fire, with a ghost appearing flame in with the more defined ones. the skull looked good as well. I would have liked to seen a bit bigger pics tho, it would show the flames off even more.

to all entries: Theme competitons are hard, because there are guidelines you need to follow. That being said, you guys all need to give yourselves a pat on the back! nice jobs! Its amazing the talent we have out here, so i would love to see it even more!

Mab, thanks for the opportunity to judge.

Whoo Hooo! The suspense was killing me over here! LOL!

I thank you for all the kind words and the helpful critique, the pinstripes were actually an after thought, considering i've never attempted them before I think they came out ok but with a lil more practice I should get a bit better at them. Now if only I had the time to master true fire, hey maybe next year.

gone-wheelin congrats on the win now for the hard part judgeing. and you thought painting true fire was hard.
