Hello
1week ago, i ordered some parts for my rc from us online hobbyshop.(i live in hamilton)
So i paid $140(parts) + $12(ups standard).
two days ago, i received the parts. but they said i have to pay 62 dollars(cnd) which is brokage C.O.D.
I was so embarrased that pay 62 bucks!
do i have to pay brokage cod when i ordered parts or rc from us online hobby shop?(other than ups also?)
ps. 62 bucks included taxes, and brok fee...I think us and canada have fta.. but do i have to pay taxex always?

if you deal with someone who ships it personally, you can either minimize the taxes or pretty much not pay them by having them check the box marked gift. oh, and instead of ordering online, go to hobby hobby in streetsville. they can get anything you want pretty much and i have had nothing but great experiences from them

Try www.greathobbies.com
They are in the Maritimes, and you only pay the GST....their shipping charges are very good.
Or, like tadium54 said, try to get your US order sent to a US address, and send back to you after.
I have some relatives in Kansas, and I always get my orders from Tower Hobbies sent to them (I save 10$ of shipping). Then they ship me back, which cost about 5$...And I don't pay duties or taxes because they ship me 'as a gift'...

you paid high brokerage fee because of UPS...
with USPS (post canada equivalent) you will pay 5$ + taxes if bigger then 20$
with UPS, you will pay huge fee + taxes

juntom, Most of my RC purchase are on-line and from US sellers (towers, ebay etc.), Never ask UPS, they always ask for the brokerage fee. If possible, always USPS and if you can "ask" the seller, mark it as a gift with around $25 dollar value. Just risky if you want insurance for it.
I think anything higher than can$50, they will tax it. But from my experience, $25 and lower, they will just clear it through customs.

If they send as a gift, doesn't matter how much is that (no taxes?)??

Nope, you must really request the seller to lower the amount of the item that they will "declare" in the shipping manifesto. As much as possible, lower than $40US (roughly Can$50) ANX even with those measures, its no guarantee that they wont tax you. But based from my experience, customs just let it pass.
roots, what did you buy and how much were you taxed?
If you order product from Hong Kong (like RC MArt ) there aren't any additional fees... ever !! Very surprising.

I got charged extra to send items to myself (in the U.S.) while on vacation from Texas to Minnesota. I weighed the items, printed UPS tags and shipped them. When they got to their destination, there was a note saying that they were charging an additional amount because they had to pay more for fuel. Needless to say, I only ship USPS from now on.

Fedex and UPS are wayyyy to expensive, in my eyes. I see no problems with Canada Post or USPS as they serve the same purpose but don't have all the fancy features and "benefits" that you never use.
...Which reminds me of a funny parody pic of UPS I saw a few years back....

I think that when you get to know any hobby store, they will be willing to send as a gift so that you can skirt customs. I am sure that someone here in the states could send it to help you out as long as it was worth their time.

If you buy something and then send UPS, here is how you avoid customs charges (you still have to pay your taxes, GST and PST).
EIther have the company send you the tracking number asap after shipment, or if it shows up, refuse shipment and say you want to clear the package yourself. Then take the tracking number to the UPS depot in your city, they will give you the customs forms. Head to the customs depot...which us usually very close to the UPS depot, and pay your taxes. Head back to UPS and give them the documents, and your done and you get your package. You dont even pay the $5 that you pay with USPS/Canada post.

I'm gonna clear this up for all of you, because some guys are speculating...
when you order stuff from anywhere in the world, other than Canada, that item is subject to customs and brokerage. Having a sender check off the "gift" box means nothing. The declared value is what decides the charges.
If the declared value is under $20 CANADIAN (NOT US, because that is over $20 CAD) there are no customs/brokerage fees. Once you pay the brokerage fees, you can put in a claim to get some money back from the government, but doing so is such a pain in the ass, that it's not really worth it.
Some people are hesitant to mark down the value to under $20 for 2 main reasons....
1) it's illegal, and can result in heavy fines to them
2) if the package get's lost, and was worth $200, you'd only get back the $20 you declared as the value
There are 2 solutions to this....
1) buy stuff locally (DUH)
2) for big ticket items, ship it to the states, and pick it up. if you like, I have a place in Niagara Falls NY that takes packages for you, charges you $5 fee per box. I've done this with roughly $3000 in car/motorcycle parts now, and no problems. PM me for details.
Hopefully that clears up and confusion.
cheers.
