Great choice. The XXX-T would be a good alternative. Either way, you can't go wrong.

people also tell me that if you dont use the batteries for a long period of time, you have to discharge them..what does this require?

i would say go with a traxxas. They just came out with a new line of the Stampede and the rustler. they now come stock with better electronics and they are faster out of the box. Also chances are your local hobby shop has great selection of traxxas parts. And that is better than always having to order your parts.

heres the links
stampede: monster truck, it is a great basher but more power you put into it the more it flips, breaks etc.

rustler
stadium truck design. these types of cars ar great all around trucks. they are lower than monster trucks, so when you hit the asphalt it is better yet it has long a-arms and shocks to be superior offroad also. Always been one of my favorite classes.

these are also great basher battery packs:

for alternative trucks look into the xxx-t (stadium truck)

is it better to have more or less turns on a motor?

In the beginning, I'd say you want more turns in the motor(more turns means less motor power but more runtime), it'll give you a chance to get comfortable driving & working with the vehicle. Then once you're ready for the power, you can start to bolt in the lower turn stuff(I see too many guys start out with serious mod class motors & get burned out because they didn't understand the amount of attention those motors require, nor the kind of power they produce, hard to drive it when it spins its wheels at the slightest touch of throttle). To start, I'd suggest what we call stock class motors(they're 27 turn motors, set up to be legal for a "Stock" class by most major racing organizations, good balance of decent power & runtime, & they'll make it easier to get to know your vehicle), some examples of them are ones like the CO27 or X-Stock by Trinity, as well as older Trinity motors like the Revenge of the Monster stock(which we just call a Monster stock) or the P2K 2(though the CO27 is very similar in its pwerband & is a better motor overall), or Epic's ROAR stock(used to be called the Binary, when it had 4 magnets in it instead of 2, but it wasn't legalized, so they made a 2 magnet version & just dubbed it the ROAR Stock). But of all those, I'd most strongly reccomend the CO27, very tough motor, easy to live with & excellent power for a stock class motor....

I like electric. because it is quiet, fast(depends on motor), don't need to buy fuels(just charge your battery), lighter, easy.

i see you are in brick. tho it's not close, cruizin with rc's in ramsey is a great place to shop and the owner Ron can answer alot of your questions. he does ship too.

There is another shop in beachwood that is decent, it's about 20 mins from brick. the owner sean knows electrics and nitro. His shop is called shore hobbies i believe. His prices are not the best but his service is good.

the ultimate decider is what type of area(s) do you have to run the vehicle. Also, do you plan on racing at some point? The cool thing about racing is it'll keep your interest. Bashing is fun, but it does get old after a while, especially if you are on a budget. Competition keep things going and you have some tracks in your general area to run.

if you want a truck go with an E stampede. 180 bucks at tower hobbies RTR, and a GREAT truck, it was my first one back when it came with the mech speed control and the 20 turn stinger. i cant wait to get another one.

some other E trucks ive had are the losi xxxt but thats not a basher... i broke mine in half crashing it into a door jam in the dorms.

i just got an E savage, i like it, and i loved my nitro savage for durability.

4wd is good to have but its a little more complicated, and more expensive.

i still vote the stampede, but if you NEED 4wd, then id go emaxx or esavage.

i just saw your question on who makes a good 12 turn motor.

the 'pede comes with a 12 turn now stock. so if you want to upgrade id go to a 10 turn .

Trinity and Orion both make good motors at reasonable prices (both in 10 and 12 turn)
they range anywhere from 20-60 dollars, id spend about 40 on a good bashing motor.

the 12 turn motor in the stampede is machine wound closed endbell and just generally primitive, I would try a Checkpoint based motor, factory or otherwise, a 17 turn checkpoint could probably hang with the 'pede stocker. a 10 turn motor is insanely fast, we are talkin' high 40s low 50's down the straight in my b4.
