Team Associated’s exciting and wildly successful line of 1:18 scale trucks and buggies is about to explode with NEW and never-before-seen 18R RTRs!
You've seen the big boys having fun road/rally racing on TV Sunday mornings. Well, the new AE 18R Mitsubishi Lancer, Citroen Xsara, and the unique AE Kamino ground pounder will soon be burning up the track in your neighborhood back yards and local track!
There’s more! Shortly after Christmas AE will brighten up the New Year with more models to come. We have to keep these body styles secret, but let's just say you will be SHOCKED.
Just like their cousins the 18T, 18B and 18MT, everything is included--the transmitter, the car, motor, battery, and charger are all in the box at no extra cost. All you'll need to do is charge the included race pack, add eight double A’s and you are racing!
Features:
• Shorter a-arms, dogbones and camber/steering links
• AE AT Treaded Tires
• White narrow spoked racing wheels
• Molded tire inserts
• Choice of either Mitsubishi Lancer, Citroen Xsara or AE Kamino bodies in their own realistic race/rally liveries!
• Available in RTR form with standard hi-quality AE RTR electronics!

Actually, the inside scoop tells me that this was the first AE 1/18th scale. When the Mini-T was released and they saw the popularity of it, they quickly changed the design to include the longer arms and hense, the 18T was born.
So, this is an old design being brought back to life...In fact, it's the original design.

HPI has been doing it for years. The Nitro MT and the Super Nitro Rally were the same vehicle with different length suspension parts. The RS4 3 series shares most of its chassis components and layout with the MT2.
Tamiya has been doing it since the stone age with the TL-01 and other old-school chassis designs.
I believe some of the past Yokomo 4wd buggies shared some components with their on-road sedans.
The XXX-4 and XXX-S from Losi use the same drivetrain and basic chassis design. I believe the Street Weapon and Rally Weapon had the same basic drivetrain as the XX-4 (could be wrong on that one).
There's a conversion out there to turn a TC3 into a 4wd racing buggy.
It's not a rare thing...

IMO it looks a little strange because of the short wheelbase / wide width, but still pretty nice.

Well where was this inside info 2 years ago when the 18t was released? We all could have started telling AE how much we wanted the rally version back then! ;)
The bodies kind of look like the Cartoon bodies from Japan for the 12th scale TC's. But a little better.

I hope they're not using associated scissors to cut the wheel wells.....they look they were cut with a butter knife..
I don't mind using the same chassis for a rally car, but the Thunder Tiger influence is starting to show even more. The bodies look aaaaaaaaaaaaeweful. I think they should have included a more appropriate front bumper and body mounts. There's too much nose ahead of the front body mounts and I think it's going to allow the body chatter and get sucked under the front wheels. I'd like to see this done with a car that has a higher quality chassis and a little better execution of the body molding and mounting.

I like the "cartoony" look of the body - in this case it actually shows that the designers were more concerned about performance than just creating a scale replica of a rally car - the larger tires and wider stance will only help it's offroad capability.
I'm actually pretty bummed that the 1/10th scale rally class disappeared from our track a few years ago - we had a pretty strong class for a couple of years (actually managed 29 rally racers at one club race once, averaged 23). The 1/10th scale rally cars, running stock motors (P2K's were "the thing") clicked off lap times that were only rivalled by the fastest mod buggy drivers - just insane. I think what killed the class was the fact that the cars needed extensive modification to be competetive - at least with regards to the HPI (I raced the HPI and a converted TC3). This little rally should bring back some of the feel of the class, and may prove to be more durable without requiring a ton of mods.
Associated would do well to include a fitted foam front bumper to prevent the body from "sucking under", though I'm sure racers will most likely hack the body like we used to on the 1/10th scale cars.

Interesting... Not much of a road guy myself (at least not right now) but I applaud Associated for giving people an option.
I’ve got an idea though… Admittedly it only (further) blurs the delineation lines between the models. Put some of the 18t off road tires on and a truck body sized to actually fit them into the wheel wells and… Voila! Instant Baja truck, or would that be RC18BT... Before you start hollerin’ about just getting an 18T… I’ve got an MT and a B thank you. Besides the only thing that you need to “add” to the R to get the BT would be the body, as suitable tires “from” the T are already on the market…

I agree 100%.
The cartoony body is kinda cool looking I think. So it's not scale, that's alright. Anyone who's driven an 1/18 on-road knows the "scaleness" of them is what kills them. They useless on anything but a prepared racing surface. This little badboy should handle a few bumps and some dirt...just like a rally car should. Finally a usable 1/18 on-road...awesome work AE (well...TT)! I'll be first in line to pick one of things up when they become available.
Oh..and one other advantage to the bodies that I can see...being all cartoony has made them kinda cute...maybe the girlfriends and wives out there will like them for that "cute" look?

As in Squeezing every last ounce the 18 platform has. I mean the rc18t and b were ok. but now the rc18r. why not rediseign just a bit. i can just ell. you might as well just convert. Im not saying there slacking in other classes. just the minis. OOps. i meant to use a different word than quality in my first post. i mean to say. like uhh whats the word. slacking in design characteristics

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The RC18 platform is still pretty fresh, doesn't need much in the way of upgrades to be a competent performer. Is the competition doing anything better?

well the open spur gear can be considered broke, so could have used some fixing;)
but overall it is a good platform, and majority of owners like their rc18's.
and i think the cartoony body adds to it's appeal in some eyes. and the fact that this thing does not need a completely smooth surface to run on like the m18,mrs4 is a plus!!!

wish you would have told Associated that back when they released the RC10T on the RC10 platform :roll2: I mean, God, who wants yet ANOTHER option about ANYTHING?
BTW-I'd always assumed that Associated was working on an RC18TC3, and then Xray beat them to the punch with a very similar car, so they threw long arms on it and called it a T, anybody else?
And are these standard Mini-T/18T size tires, or are they narrower like the front tires of the B?

The wheels are the same as the front 18b wheels, with a different off-set I think. So you can use 18b front tires on them.
I don't even have a TC3 anymore, but still kick myself once in awhile for not getting the rally conversion! Probably would still have the car.

I bought it a while ago. Partly for the 200mm stuff, but also for the rally. I planned to do some rally with that, but had horrible troubles of rocks and crap getting stuck inbetween the reinforced parts of the chassis (with the triangular ribbing) and worst of all rocks in the steering assembly! Not fun, at all...
I still have the whole conversion though, I've never used it since the first time I tried rally. That was also the last time I tried rally

It seems like we've come full circle in some ways. R/C started with Baja Truck style cars. We've seen those trucks grow in width and lower their CG to become the modern stadium truck and now there are cries for the originals again.
I'd guess that a Baja truck conversion would be pretty similar to what happened with the XX-4: a new body. The truck body makes it look more realistic but does very little else. If there's more to do than put a truck body on instead of a car, there might be something to it, but I'd guess we look to Tamiya for realism and AE/Losi to push the speed envelopes.

If the bodies looked better they would be pretty sweet
Don't judge it by the pics. If you can look at one in person, it may change your mind.

Yes, any foams they make for the 18T will work...BRP, Associated both make them.

I was just concerned about the clearance under the body, even after you true them down
Has anyone tried these yet?

I run a RC18T at my track and untrued pairs of associated and BRP foams are smaller by about 1/8 than the stock 18R wheels and tires..

Looks like a sweet ride! I just can't wait until they get parts out so I can convert mine.
No, any foams that they make for the 18T will NOT work. The 18R wheels are the same width as the 18B fronts, so therefore the 18T wheels would bind in the front. Also, to make the car narrower, they changed the offset of the 18R wheels. So, the 18T wheels would stick out of the body. I got this info from Tony Phalen himself, so I'm not doubting it.

Heh, didn't think they could milk the 18T platform anymore, but they managed to do it...
I agree just a 18t with some road wheels anyone can do that...lets make the mini t a road car also...and force to pay extra.

Or how about a pic next to a radio? Maybe in the factory packaging...

um.. that pic above IS next to a radio and IN the factory packaging so if you were being sarcastic that was unnecessary ... but the box size doesn't give and indication of comparative size... the radio does a little but I would like to see it next to another vehicle....

Here's an idea.......don't buy it. What about those people that find this interesting, an onroad car. Perhaps they don't already own an 18t. I don't understand people that bitch about stuff like this. I personally think it looks great.

I love the idea but I wish they had made it a touring car. I guess the dimensions were not right for that though.
