I have recently purchased a Savage X and the shop I got it at helped me get it running. So I was breaking it in and I was on my second tank and the truck died. I assumed the engine was finally warm and I needed to adjust the needles so I did. Now it stops when ever I apply brakes or pull back on the truck which is hard because it takes off without me ever even touching the throttle. Any thoughts on my problem? Also some information that is or may be usefull it is rather cold where I live not extremely cold though and the day it died when I was messing with the needles a small hex screw fell out. Any help would be awesome, thanks for looking.

adjust the idle screw, the slide in the carb should close no more than 1mm at full brake, also adjsut your linkage length, and radio EPA's, the gap in the carb should not change if you apply the brakes

check your clutch to make sure its not dragging...

Also, check out the bearings in the pinion gears on the engine's output shaft, if they are shot it can cause this too.

I'm very new to RC's so if anyone could explain how to do these things (maybe with pics) that would be cool. I did adjust my linkage lenth and took off the spring on the spring and exchanged it with some fuel tubing. Also it doesn't seem to help when the idle is adjusted.

the idle screw sounds like your problem. its a little screw at the "base" of the carb. the one they say you arent supposed to touch really. just give it like a 1/4 to a 1/2 turn IN.
the problem youre having is (most likely) caused by when youre hitting the brake, since the throttle/brake servo is connected to both, it closes the carb opening just a little too much and cuts off all your fuel. by adjusting the needle IN, it will keep the carb from closing so much.
after this , give it a test run, and you may possibly have to adjust your linkage to the brake and throttle, but not definitely.

From what he said it seems more to me he has the idol screw in too far explaining why it wants to take off on its own and also causing the clutch to still be enguaged when he hits the brakes.
Lower the idol and adjust the brake so the brakes kick in later in the servo throw.

ooh yeah, i didnt read the full message, should have, but didnt.
try messing with the idle screw, give it about 1/4 turn OUT, and see what happens, if that doesnt work , try 1/4 turn in.
have you adjusted your carb for the cold weather?

Since you've got a shop that will help you, I would just take it there. They should be able to help you more in person, then we can over the net. Especially if you've lost a part and broken a part.
Once you get it up and running you will really like it. Savage's are great trucks!

Well I got my savage up and running, it's all broken in and everything. This truck is a beast it hauls some serious butt. I'm taking it up north today but when I get back I'll post the pictures.

i had the same problem with my hpi rush evo all you need to do is adjust the idle screw so that the hole is open 1mm . dont start the truck until you know it doesnt close fully. then start the truck . if it drives off adjust the throttle on your control so that the hole closes more start the truck and then once you are driving it open the throttle . when it comes to packing it away close the throttle and apply the brakes . this should work if you get what i mean
