Best Paint Competition – November 2006

Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of November and will close at Midnight (EST) on Thursday, November 30, 2006.

Restrictions: None!!! Go wild

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.

Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.

If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

______ will judge this month’s Pro Class. The amateur judge will be judged by ____.

Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition. This month I had to judge, and that is unfair. Failure to judge or notify me PRIOR to the end of the month will result in disqualification of future events.[\b] I don’t think this will be a problem, but I don’t want people to enjoy the thrill of victory without helping out the community If something comes up at the last second let me know, I’m a reasonable person and will understand.

[B]
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

I have been trying to get a hold of our previous judge, but to no avail. I will fill in the names when I have them.

My sincerest appologies about the delay this month. I hope you all are chomping at the bit to enter them.

Cool, thanks Mab! It is disappointing that some winners don't seem to like to judge. Perhaps we should give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe his PC died or something.

Anyway, here we go! Lets accept Fester's challenge from last month's comp and have a record number of entries, I'll go first!

Protoform Caddy CTS.
Painted with Spazstix Hard Anodized Red and Orange, Spazstix black. Alclad chrome on the window trim, backed with Fascolor silver.
Custom headlights and taillights, everything cut in Bob Dively's liquid mask.
Class is Pro.

I wanted something subtle, not flashy designs like I usually do. Unfortunately you can't really see the subtle shading in the flames very well in the digital pics. I took it to the track and had it sold for $50 within 1/2 hour of arriving, so I was happy with that. The new owner let me take a pic of it after he mounted it on his TC4.

Hey everyone, thought I'd give this a shot for the first time. This is the first body that I've done entirely on my own. I was trying to make a simple, "street racer" paint job that would still look kinda catchy.

I really wanted the back ground color to be a nice baby blue. I wanted the Pearl Blue to be just thins wisps with mostly white pearl and sprint white under it. I should have put a super thin coat of sprint white between the pearl white and pearl blue.

Also, I butchered cutting it out. Lessons learned. :) I'm working on a body for my Traxxas SRT now I'll let you know how it goes.

That TSUNAMI IS AMAZING... HOW DID YOU DO IT...did you mask the lines or hand paint them?????

wow....

Thanks! :)
They're all cut into the mask, then peeled and painted in order. First, draw the design on the outside with a marker. Trace those once on the inside with a sharp knife. The drawn lines interfere with seeing what's already been cut, so they're all wiped off with alcohol and a rag. This makes it easy to see the lines already cut; better still with a bright, even light source - it refracts off the cut lines quite nicely. Following the previous cuts, make a matching cut parallel, to make the appropriate masked lines. Peel them first, because any adjacent masking will just take 'em up with it if you don't.
The whole process isn't difficult, just tedious and finicky.

mes
12-01-2006, 08:03 PM
Here is one other tip on cutting the pinstriping. I usually cut the first side of the line out. Then I spray a light coat of white paint over the cuts. This really helps with seeing the first line. Now you can simply cut a parallel line to the first one that you cut. I find that by doing this my pins are much more consistent and even.

Spamcake is right. It is extremely tedious and time consuming but usually worth it for the end results.

First, please let me take a moment for congratulating all the participants on their entries. They are all works of art and something to be very proud of. It takes a lot of time and effort to complete a body with the detail and complexity that some of these entries have as well as courage to lay them out in front of the Internet for open discussion. Well done to all.

Here are the results, counting down to 1st place:

Flames and scallops run rampant around any track. Good choice for a buggy. The flow, however, does not compliment the body lines....nor does the pink.

Scallops always look good, as mentioned before, but like your other entry, the execution is off. The lines in the scallops could be more straight and even. The black fades in the silver are a bit chunky.

Unusual design and layout. Thumbs up for originality, however the neon and dark greens aren't doing it for me. Nice use of glitter. The cut lines could be more smooth.

If the focus of the scheme is flames, then they need to be flawless. Try spending more time on details like pinstripes and shape. Also the symmetry on the lights/ grille is off. Good ideas here, but not executed well.

Nice graphic design. The lines I can see appear perfect. I would have liked to have seen the black lines also cut out instead of faded. That seems to be the only "airbrush effect" on the body. (It's the ol' rattle can man left in you)

I'm sure I have seen the scheme somewhere. The tricks to executing these J-style paint jobs properly are perfect symmetry and straight/ even lines. Good job, but could use more time.

You found that oommph! :) This body is amazing. One of those that anybody would be crazy to actually use. The only thing I took points off for were the stray black marks (drop shadows in the white) and for the wavy flag effect. Try turning the dots in the checkers into lines at high and low points.

Spam could fart and it would be meticulous. Anything he does is perfect...the perrenial PRO. I appreciate his offering at the last second to complete this competition. I would, however like to see some more shading in the actual tidal waves. It may be there, but the camera did not pick it up.

All I can say is WOW. Mark has proven to be not only creative, but completely INSANE....and I thought I tried cutting challenging schemes. I did find 2 flaws.....can anyone else point them out? Also, the "'" in Jammin' comes at the end, not before the n :D (Bonus points for using Faskolor Key Lime Pearl....must be reading my column ;) )

Winner: Mes, by a nose.

Nice job, again, to everyone!

Josh,
Thanks man! I can't believe I put that ' in the wrong place. That was a good catch. I guess I'm gonna have to do another one with it done correctly! Where is that spell check on my masking????????

Everyone did an awesome job. They all look sweet.

I'll be back to judge the pros this month. Let's finish the year strong!

Okay, I've got the points tallied but before I post them I wanted to say congratulations to all the entries. This is the first time I have ever judged a paint contest so I hope I did okay. Well, onto the judging:

4th Place
Fester2004: Chevy Stadium Truck
Design: 4
Execution: 5
Difficulty: 5
Total: 14
Notes: Interesting paint scheme, I wasn't sure if you were going for a CF tiger stipe affect or a ripped CF affect although I am leaning more towards rips.
I think you did a good job on the CF either way.
The fades could have been cleaner and more uniform and some definition between the rips/stripes, (pinstripe, drop shadows, highlights, anything), and the rest of the body color would have really helped set it off.
http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=69100&stc=1

3rd Place
myqueace: Nissan 350Z
Design: 8
Execution: 4
Difficulty: 7
Total: 19
Notes: Nice design although the use of a third color or a darker/lighter color choices would have made the design really stand out.
I had to deduct points for the pinstiping and fades; the pinstripes could have been cleaner and you fade was blotchy and had some overspary in areas.
If you've got the resources, invest in an airbrush and your paint schemes will thank you.

2nd Place
Radio Acer: Beams Integra
Design: 7
Execution: 8
Difficulty: 6
Total: 21
Notes: Perfect design for the drifter/tuner body style well executed too.
The colors choice is nice but I think the addition of a third color, some pinstriping or even a CF paint technique on the hood would have been a welcome addition.
There were a couple of flaws in the masking but, the lines are uniform from one side to the other.

1st Place
masterchief01: Nemesis
Design: 7
Execution: 9
Difficulty: 7
Total: 23
Notes: Not an over complicated design but very well layed out and executed.
Choice of colors was good, they contrast each other nicely and the pinstripes set them apart nicely.
The pinstripes are straight and fairly uniform, very well done, super clean from what I can see.
Some additional images of the other side would have been nice though.

good job gone_wheelin. And congrats to mastercheif01.
I appreciate the notes, i'll keep those in mind for next time. I can never get my masking tape to stick everywhere though. I use the blue 3M stuff, and i've heard that others use it too, so it's obviously not the tape, but rather my inexperience. Is there some trick to making it stick or should i use lighter coats? (i usually paint only one coat for each color) I know that this isn't the place to ask, but while i was on the subject i thought i might just ask, you guys are all amazing painters, i can't think of a better place to go to advice.

hijacker

Radio Acer - I use the blue painter's tape too. A couple tips...

When you apply the tape to the body, press it down really well with your fingernail, this is called "burnishing" the tape. Don't be afraid to press hard, this seals the tape to the lexan better.

Also, you should be applying your paint in about 3 coats. The first and second coats should be just light mists, and then finish it up with a 3rd, but none of them should be heavy enough to completely paint the area in one coat. Heavy coats cause paint bleeds beneath the tape.

Hope this helps!

yippeeeee!i am getting closer to winning....oh wait there were only 4 entries! :D :driving: heheh!as arnold would say: "I'LL BE BACK!"I will get on that podium yet!

i was tryn to go for the carbon fiber rips but i should have made them a tad smaller cuz i wanted to go for the ripping metal effect but maybe next time!thanks!!

Radio Acer: Exactly what hijacker said. Burnish the edges of the tape and use light coats. I read somewhere that the light coats will also seal the edges of the tape, further reducingthe chance of paint bleeds.

Fester: Did you use the LM for the rips or was that tape?

FESTER2004
12-05-2006, 01:35 PM
everything was liquad mask

myqueace
12-05-2006, 01:55 PM
I used liquid mask for mine but i just used the masking tape for another body I just finished. It turned out pretty bad. Bled in a lot of spots. I think I'll stick the liquid mask from now on.

Try using ripped up tape for your rips next time. I have never actually done this myself but I have seen it done with good results.

All of you guys painted up some great looking bodies for this month's competition. I am impressed. I just wish more of you could show these bodies mounted on a chassis or even fake it with having the body sitting on blocks of wood and placing tires in the wheel wells. This way they are more likely to be selected to be shown in Readers' Rides.

A huge thanks goes out to the judges as always for a timely and excellent job judging! Lets have a round of applause for them.

Also, Great job to all the entrants this month. Ive now been around enough to see a few of you begin to evolve and improve. I cant wait to see where things go in the future!

The new contest should be up in a few minutes.

To reenforce what paul said:

The two of us are perusing the boards in search of bodies to go into readers rides. The only catch is they need to be mounted, or at least mounted to a mocked up wooden chassis.

Head over to the YEAHHHHAAA thread for a discussion on only allowing bodies with what appears to be a chassis.

Ummm, thanks? heh.
The shading, what there is of it, is indeed rather minimal. The piece is based, however loosely, on the painting by Katsushita Hokusai, completed circa 1830 or thereabouts. I did make a change or two, like using a bit of interference blue in the white wave peaks, and changing the shape of the breaking waters' claws; if only to make them that much easier to accomplish.

Thanks Lidz for your diligent judging work. It's always a challenge, and you stepped up to the plate in grand effective style. Bringing reference pictures to the same page as the results is always a big help.

Congratulations to Mes for his well-deserved win. Nice piece, it looks like it was quite the nightmare to keep track of all the bits of masking involved. Yow.

Cheers all!

Spancake,
Thanks!

That is totally awesome knowing that your body was inspired by actual artwork. It gives it so much more meaning. You really pulled it off. Very nice work.
