Hey everyone, newbie here looking to get a Savage... something with high ground clearance for the snow here in Canada (eh?).

Looking at HPI's website and I guess they haven't updated their site in over a year because they're showing as a new product the Savage SS 4.6 but the review for it was back in May 2005. So I don't understand how that's considered new. Product # is 871... and on their site is also an 861 which looks to be identical...

Or are they due for a new one out soon? I don't want to get this and a week later a new model comes out.

Like I said, I'm still newb here so please any redirections and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well if you want the latest KIT model offered for the Savage I would suggest you get the Savage X SS. It is the latest SS version of the Savage.

"Latest SS Version".... what does SS stand for?

Super Sport. Their SS versions are always what they call their kits as apposed to their RTR's. So if you get the SS version you will have to build/assemble it yourself, this is the way I would go personally, you can learn way more about your car/truck if you build it yourself.

Here is the Savage X SS:

The Kit also has some options, it's got a racing clutch bell, and a bigger engine than the X. It's not just a kit version, it has improvements as well.

I'm getting confused.... so this 4.6 kit, does it have the X chassis? The X chassis is the best chassis for the Savage isn't it?

Also, I'd also have to purchase all the 'electronics'? What all does that consist of? Servos (x4), receiver/transmitter/remote?

And for the life of me, I can't find if prices are in CDN or USD on towerhobbies.com

Thanks guys.

This is the X SS kit with the 4.6(.28) engine. It is basically the X but with newer updated parts.

You will have to get a transmitter, receiver, receiver pack, and two servos(one for steering, and one for throttle/brake). You will also need various tools, lubes and some lock-tite.

And the prices on Tower Hobbies are in US dollars I believe, but the have a currency converter on their site which should switch the prices to CDN if that is what you need.

I was told by a few people that upgraded parts isn't worth the price... better off to get the X RTR and upgrade from there... what do you think?

I would deffinately go with the X SS if it were me. I have the 4.6SS kit, which is the one before the X SS, and the 4.6 engine has alot of power. I liked the fact that I got to build it as well, I usually only get kits.

Another good thing about the X SS is that you can choose your own radio gear, and get something nice that will last you a while and not be junk like some stock radios are. Plus this has some better parts than the RTR which makes it a little more versitile and durable.

So, it's really up to you, but I would strongly suggest the X SS. Over all it's a nice truck.

What's the difference between this one:

http://www.hpiracing.com/kits/kitMain.php?partNo=871 (871)

and

http://www.hpiracing.com/kits/kitMain.php?partNo=861 (861)
http://www.hpiracing.com/graphics/kits/861/header.jpg

that 871 is the newer model isn't it? But it's the SS4.6 compared to the X SS.

They're both kits.... but I guess from what you're saying, the part #861 is the newer better choice?

Or.... should I wait altogether if there is a new model due out sometime in the near future? From the sounds of it, the newest one HPI has released was about 1-2 years ago now...

Yes, the newest one is the X SS and it has only been out for around 2-3 months now.
