The gear ratio is a ratio of the gear teeth. The first number is the pinion and the second number is the spur. For example, I am running 17/87 gearing in my Evader, that means I have a 17 tooth pinion and a 87 tooth spur gear. The pitch is the amount of teeth per a certain space (I do not remember the space). The larger the pitch number, the smaller the teeth are, and the smaller the pitch number, the larger the teeth are. To get the most speed out of a motor, you want the largest pinion and/ or smallest spur. In most cases, start from the stock gearing, and go up 1-2 teeth on the pinion, and see how you like the speed and power. If you are getting a hot motor, or sluggish starts, you are geared too high. I hope this makes sense.

Hmm, I though I would let somebody else answer that. It will be hard to say "use a this size pinion" without knowing your driving style and track and all that. You will have to experiment with different gearing to find the optimum ratio. Use the stock gearing as a starting point and go from there.

i've tested 78t spur and 20t pinion and notice that it has good accel but top speed sux.....what pinion should i use to get the max top speed????
Check this out

you will need to know a little more info such as tire diameter and your diff gear ratio but this will let you figure out what you want, 21/60 is xxx final drive ratio 22/60 is yyy final drive ratio, the bigger the FDR the quicker the car will be, the smaller the FDR number the faster it will go top end as you have found with 20/78 vs 21/60. for crazy fast top end you want the numbers to be "closer" my old top speed setup on my tamiya tt01 was 21/55 for example. The 21 turn motor is mild by any standard so you should not really have heat issues. if you change to a lower turn mod motor you will need to play with it again to find the right gearing. I hope this make sense lol.

Just looked up your manual online.
*WARNING!*
the T- Spec comes with 48 pitch METRIC gearing...i.e., same as Tamiya, aslo known as .60 modular.
You will need the appropriate pitched pinion for this, or you will have gear failure!
I also see it comes with the adapter to switch to standard Kimbrough, ect. spur gears. I strongly suggest you make this switch, as the metric pitch can be very difficult to find. Any hobby shop will carry the standard 48 pitch gears.
Now, on to gearing,.....
Seeing this is a spec car, you need to follow the rules if racing, if not.....then have at it. The kit supplied motor is a 21 turn, which i am assuming you have. You can go a tooth or two above stock to gain a bit more speed, but normally, the kit supplied motors are a bit weak. Any aftermarket 21 turn will usually give you added power. Remember tho, if you drop below that 21, gear DOWN to compensate! The lower the turn motor, the lower you gear. If you drop to a 16 turn, drop about 2 teeth on your pinion, as this puts the motor in its peak RPM range, allowing it to run as designed, and give you proper power, speed, and runtime.
hope this helps..

Looks like 48 to me. Very similar to the one in my TC4.
