Factory sucks, but with a lot of work you can make it go. I bought the New Bright and it will take stock size motors and all of the components can be placed by cutting out the plastic, but stock it doesn't go over anything other than packed driveway snow.

Ron, Those nitro snowmobiles are sick! They come with OS.21 engines and Rossi pipes. Plus they look really beautiful all around.

Where can you order one of those snowmobiles?

If it is one of those Blades/Polaris', they suck. I have a Blade and when the track gets wet, the drive system just spins on the track. (even with screws in the drum) Also steering draws 90% of the motors power so you are stuck when you try to turn. (I am not sure if the newer polaris models are any different)
One of those New Bright huge Ski-doos look cool, I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one. At least it has the room to mod it.
I want one of those Nitro Rev's! Alot better than those goofy art attack ones. I have been wanting to build one, but don't have the equipment or fabricating knowledge. I am going to have to save my money and hope a manufacturer picks this up.

i have one of the polaris walmart ones. THey suck. DO not buy it unless u have a good idea on how to upgrade. THey are not even worth driving with the stock setup. ill be posting a thread in a little bit trying to get some help on how to install a traxxas stinger motor on one of these

They would work just as well in loose sand. Alot more wear and tear though since the sand will get in everywhere.
sportmaxx91, look at what you can do to the drive system before you drop a hotter motor in. I had it all planned out to drop in a 540 until I realized that the drive drum will just spin on the track. Lining the track with a small chain in the center and rig a sprocket on the drive drum should work. Hmmm, I might have to give that a try myself. I never thought of that before.
I made a suspension drop bracket for mine and flipped the suspension setup for better angle of attack and more ground clearance.
The New Bright MX-Z would be the better buy. I looked at one a couple years ago when they were $200 and picked it apart. It is a much better design than the blade/polaris. A little heavy though.
Only $75 on tower.

heres my polaris snowmobile. It goes so slow stock its not worth driving. THe track has real tall tread so i don't think traction will be much of a prob. The front suspension is ok. If i get the stinger motor working then i will be upgrading the steering to an actual servo, ill get an ESC, and ill use a traxxas radio. the front suspension is simple enough that i think i could upgrade it.
THis is the pic of the SM (snow mobile) with the body off.

ANd this is a little pic of a body i have that i t hink looks kool on it. Just kinda random. Its off a nikko truck. I might be able to fit on of my nitro truck bodies on there as well. HMMMMM

ANd this one basically shows the stock motor versus the traxxas stinger 20t

ANd heres the SM with the drive gears out. The gears that u see are from the steering.

THis one gives u an idea of the scale and how big the stinger is compared to the SM.

One of the LHS has an artattack, its been there 4-5 years (was still there this summer). Wasn't completely built. If you want I can see if he still has it?

That's how I was going to lay my motor out.
I was just thinking, maybe the hex drive is the same size as the hex insert on the traxxas slipper clutches? You would have to ruin a set by screwing the 2 plates together, but it may work if the hexs are the same.
Standard size stadium truck shock springs fit well on those shocks.
I ran out of room laying my rc parts in there so thats another reason I gave up. The steering setup and final drive system are the only tricky parts I can think of.
Should make for some fun.

Sportmaxx91, thanks for the pics!
Do you think it would be possible to retrofit a high torque servo in there for the steering? Is there space?
Looks like it might be hard to fit the 540 motor in the stock motors place. How about a 380/400 size brushless?

i dont think that stinger motor is gunna work w the stock electronics. but thats pretty sweet!

I don't see the need for a fancy high torque servo. All you are throwing around are a couple of light weight ski's. Some cheap standard servo should work well enough.
I ran a 540 silver can with my RS boat's stock electronics no problem. Still sucked though. Just have to install the capacitors or you will have no reverse.
Looking at the pics, it should be pretty easy to mount a low profile servo in there with a car servo saver. Could also do some sort of linkage if you want it off to the side.
If I had an esc, I would give this a try. I was looking at mine and it looks like I may have solved the track spin.

Well, I got bored on Monday. So I decided to rip my sled apart.
Here is what I have so far.

The motor is too large. The 20t pinion is < 1/8th inch away from being meshed properly. I may have to go for a larger pinion/spur or look for a motor of a smaller diameter. I have a few more laying around here somewhere.
That's an 81t traxxas spur mounted using the slipper clutch center alignment thingy drilled out to match the piece sticking out of the stock gear. I just had to cut the mount off the right side and file a bit off to make it wide enough to fit. I also had to cut a hole in the bottom for gear clearance. I will epoxy a piece of lexan over it eventually.
The tricky-est part was the steering. It came to me lying in bed last night. So far it looks like it will work. I just have to re-do it in clothes hanger wire or welding rod and pick up some stoppers. (or deprive my tmaxx of brakes :D ) I am also considering locating the servo right behind the motor.
That last pic is showing my drop bracket and how I flipped the suspension setup. That's an old rc car tire over the rear bogeys. It helps tighten the track tension.
Another concern is battery placement and fit. I will jump off that cornice when I get there though.
I just need to buy an esc. But once I have this thing finished and I know it will work. Hopefully it does. popcorn

looks good, i haven't really done much work with mine. However there is a guy over at the traxxas forum that modded a new bright snow mobile. He made it belt drive. Really pretty kool. It doesn't look like we are going to get any snow here for awhile so there isn't much motivation in this project for me. Illl get to it though. LOL

From the LHS.

I am not a big fan of the looks of that thing. The $700 price tag at the LHS really turned me off too. I would rather have a somewhat scale looking machine. Good machine to use to fab your own though.
I stopped work on my sled since I am at the point that I have to spend money. And I really don't feel like doing that right now. :D
