Best Paint Competition – December 2006
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!!
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of December and will close at Midnight (EST) on Sunday, December 31, 2006.
Restrictions: None!!! Go wild I know Piggy had this as a concourse month, but I’m changing it up. Imaginary bonus points for anyone who does a cool holiday theme.
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry
Pro - If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Pro class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro class are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
mes will judge this month’s Pro Class. The amateur judge will be judged by masterchief .
Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition. This month I had to judge, and that is unfair. Failure to judge or notify me PRIOR to the end of the month will result in disqualification of future events. I don’t think this will be a problem, but I don’t want people to enjoy the thrill of victory without helping out the community If something comes up at the last second let me know, I’m a reasonable person and will understand.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

Here goes. I know it's not the most detailed paint job but I have gone for a nice tidy, slightly sporty look with this.

Paint = Custom Colour Candy Green with a thin layer of Custom Colour Pearlesant White backed with White.

Ok so this one is waaaayyy worse than my first. I wanted some holiday colors but wanted to use masking tape instead of the liquid mask. Big mistake... I will only use liquid mask from now on. If you can make the tape work for you, more power to you but as you can see it bled soooooo awfully on me. This is definitely a bashing body. As a bonus, you get to see the view from the roof of my building.
Anyway...

myqueace - I don't mean to sound harsh, but that is some of the worst paint bleeds I've ever seen. I think the problem is that you are rushing the masking. It doesn't look like you burnished the edges of the tape at all, probably applied the paint in far too heavy of coats, and the result is massive bleeding!
You REALLY need to take your time when you are laying down the tape, make sure it seals to the entire surface. Be careful over body lines, the tape will often have an open gap where it goes over contours or body lines in the hood, along the bottom of the sides and the window trim areas. Press the edges down FIRMLY with your fingernail, do it several times and be certain you get all of the edges.
When I use masking tape, I spend hours laying down the tape. Comparatively speaking, shooting the paint involves a very small fraction of the total time of completing the paintjob, much less than masking the body. I know you get excited about putting down the paint, and want to get through the boring part of masking it off, but seriously, if you take your time in this step, you will be far happier with the results.
Dude, I'm not flaming you in any way at all, so don't take offense please. I'm just trying to help. It's obvious to me that you enjoy painting bodies and your paintjobs look as if you have some talent there. So I'm just trying to give some tips learned from my own mistakes.
Keep on paintin'!

Chad,
I appreciate the help. I tried to burnish the edges but i think my real problem was probably that my coats were too heavy. I did take hours working on the masking but thinking back I feel like I rushed the actual painting. I'll keep trying at some point.

The first few coats should be no more than a light mist. If you cant easily see through the body after the third coat your using too much paint. Dont feel you have to make the color completely solid. Get it to be nice and evenly colored then back it with white or silver.

Myqueace,
I am totally with you on using liquid mask. It really just stinks letting the masking dry. I just masked four bodies using liquid mask so that they are ready to paint when I get the time. One thing nice about the liquid mask once it dries it will stay soft and plyable for about a month. I too have tried masking tape on several occasions but have always come back to the liquid stuff. Keep on trying new things and you'll find what works best for you.
Resp,
Really nice one. It has great colors that just pop. I like this one a lot.

The Revo body is pure sports to match the performance of the truck its for. Nice and eye catching but none too plain. Quality matched to the wheels too. Like at a lot!!!
Hijacker, In agreement about the Blue, striking and almost has a purple sheen to it, nice one fella. Would be showcased even more with a set of gleeming shiny new chromed wheels. Don't in anyway take this the wrong way but after looking at previous months entries..... If the RC is presented well, the paint job we all spend all that time and money on looks all the more sweet and eye catching.

Oh exciting! I might be able to get a body up for the competition this month. I've actualy been working on masking it tonight. I have no idea how it will turn out. I'm using some great planes masking tape for the first time (1/8" and 1/4" widths), and it will also be my first time ever with liquid masks.. so I'm sure it will be horendous. Oh well :)

I believe your refering to a comment before when someone quoted this rule. I didnt know who it was refering to. All your bodies are elligable for the paint competition because they have not been entered in the RCZONE PAINT COMPETITIONS!!! When that rules was written there were no other contests.
In the event that someone believes a body has been entered twice ON THIS SITE, please point it out and reference the month that it was used (if you think its cheating you can do the leg work, I refuse to go on wild goose chases myself).

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h163/BCP_Dave/DSC06474.jpg
Jagged carbon fiber looks good, but a consistent pattern would accentuate the blue stripe a little better than the non-symmetric look. Great choice of color and some small visual evidence of the white bleeding into the blue stripe, but otherwise well executed

Excellent job of playing on the holiday season, however the execution was lacking. Perhaps this was a rushed job, but the key to using masking tape is burnishing the edges. This way, all of the lines are clearly defined and masking tape becomes a rather effective tool for painting beautiful bodies. The bleeding is really going to hurt you with scoring.

Very simplistic yet effective racing stripe-type design. The custom yet subtle color mixing here is a very nice and effective way to make the body pop, and the contrast between the pearl white and the candy green is great as well. Some bleeds are evident in this simple masking job, but do not take away from the paint job too much.

Purple and multicolor stripes
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k300/kaotickc/Picture027.jpg
Really smooth combination of a custom, rich, candy color with a simplistic yet effective “Van Halen style” stripe pattern. In the sunlight, each one of those fluorescent colors just POP off of that dark purple body and the abstract placement of the lines add to the effect. Absolutely flawless execution of a simple yet beautiful paint job that demands a lot of attention around those tough-to-keep-sharp lines. Now-make the main color red and the stripes white, and it’ll make the Mugen “Jump!” [For those of us unfamiliar with Van Halen, please PM me for an explanation]

That pearlescent orange is an awesome color! I really like the color combination of the blue and the white and the orange. The little black and blue designs on the body accentuate the orange to white transition and help it flow. Overall a great design and superb execution.

A simplistic design with some racetrack flare. The black design on the hood really breaks up the monotony of the neon yellow, but I feel like the red was robbed of its proper exposure! There is an ABUNDANCE of the neon yellow on that body, and I think that instead of making the read look as if it was slid in at the last minute, incorporate it into the neon yellow work. With that said, that is one of the more attractive bodies in the competition, and the window, line, and other masking work shows no evidence of bleeding.

White, checkered, and flamed crowd pleazer (?)

An awesome design that I would expect to come from a pro-level painter. The masking leaves a little to be desired around the flames, the rear pinstriping, and the roll cage area, however the airbrushing of the flames, the checkers and the level of detail of even the “rivets” in the windows really add to the body. Your knowledge of shading and 3-dimensional painting is quite nice, and I suggest next time you take your time on the masking and jump to drop shadows with some thinned spray tint. This would really help to make those checkered flags and flames pop.

Very simplistic design, but it still is a nice look. The metallic green looks very rich and deep and the XXX masking is nice. While the design was really a stick and paint and the difficulty wasn’t too stiff, the execution was flawless and still pulled the body off.

Colorful body

Wow! This is like a clash of the titans on one body. I have so many different things I can look at, and they all look great! The experimentation that I see on this body is truly second to none, and it proves to be an interesting paint job. The clash of colors isn’t too incredibly appealing to the eyes, but I’m sure that blue comes out a little more in the direct sunlight. Lets see- your red scallop-esque/tribal design looks great, though it should maintain its symmetry along the roof line of the car. Your drop shadows look great, although they could use a little more consistency along each of the edges. The carbon fiber is WELL DONE. That is some beautiful carbon fiber work. The custom blended green and the well shaded, well drop-shadowed tribal/wicked flame design really compliment each other and develop the rear of the car nicely. The hand-painted headlights, grilles, and air dams are all well done, although again, try to use some more subtle, realistic color combinations on things that shouldn’t be a HUGE part of the body (like headlights, for example).

And the winner is....SerpentKing101 with his white and checkered crowd pleazer! Excellent job and with a few minor tweaks to your painting methods, I can see you in the pro class soon!
So there you have it! I congratulate you all on a good showing of some diverse painting styles and themes. I really enjoyed looking at all of your awesome work and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to judge the entries. Every last body I judged showed some excellent promise, and I encourage everyone out there to paint paint paint!

I can't really tell what is sticker and what is paint on this one. It looks like most of the design is sticker and the paint is the body color. I know this is a difficult size of body to paint but it can be done. Try to take that sticker that you want to use and execute the design with paint. The sticker will give you an end product to shoot for. It is a good way of practicing. See my comments on your other submission for comments on photos.

This one is a nice simple design without much technical difficulty. The stickers really give it a nice racing feel. I just wish that a little more creativity was taken with the design to really set it off.

This one was hard to tell for me. I couldn't really make out the quality of the design given the poor photos. I would suggest taking your pictures outside. Even on a cloudy day the lighting is much better and the colors come out much truer to real life. The classic flame design is really nice but the pictures don't do it justice.

You stepped up the difficulty on this one. It is a nice design. However the execution of the green at the rear wheel well looks a little too heavy and could have been improved if you continued the nice delicate design of the other parts of it. Try some drop shadows on the next one to give some depth to the design.

I really like this design. The tribal barbs between the colors must have been a real paint to cut out. They look almost too perfect. Nice clean design that looks tough on that aftershock. Try experimenting with some other techniques on your next one.

This is a nice design but the execution is where it was lacking. I can see that you have some bleeds at your masking edges. If you aren't having any luck with tape, try using liquid mask. It makes all the difference in the world to eliminate bleeds. You also appear to be laying down your paint too thick. The cf looks really good. Try to slow down a bit and take your time with things.

Really clean lines is what sets this one apart. The colors are also nice. I just think the execution is nearly flawless. That is the difference liquid mask can make. The headlights also look pretty nice too. Keep it up.

This is a classic design that would look great screaming down the street. The detail is really nice with the chrome and the white top. The flame design is nice but could have really popped with a pinstripe on them. Your attention to detail on this one is superb. I really like it.

I have to admit. I am not a big fan of the true fire. That is being done these days. But General G is doing them pretty well. This one is a little muddy in the lick department and could use a little more contrast between the layers. I can't quite make it out but it looks like there is 'orange peel' on the hood of the car. It may be that the paint was on too thick....who knows. Nice job, none the less.

It appears that you have really good control of your airbrush. Your shadows are really consistent and even. That is a hard feat to accomplish. Nice subtle detail of the cf pattern in the hood scoop area. To me it just seems like there is a little too much space in the white area and could have been filled in a little more with the flames. Not major just a picky little thing. Nice work!

The colors are simply amazing. That blue is one of my favorite colors to use. There apears to be some random stray streaks on the hood that distract from the body for me. I would try to selectively use the streaking technique in isolated areas until you get the control down. The drop shadows are also a bit heavy and could use a lighter touch. With those thing aside, I'm sure you have a very happy client.

The colors on this one just grabbed me. They really work together. The tribal design kicks butt. The shadowing and the streaking are way too heavy though and distract from the rest of the design. I've never attempted a micro body but I'm sure it is tough. You get extra points for always doing the small ones. Good job!

This one really pops out at you. The colors are a little bit much but the detailing in the drop shadows and outlines is stellar. You have some of the most amazing daggar strokes at the edges of your shadows. They really fade away nicely.

This one really has a ton of subtle detail in it. The streaking is really nicely done and the colors work great. The design of the tribal could have been a little different for my taste. I like the fact that you caried the color of the body to the wing. There is so much depth to the paint that is is amazing. Nicely done!

This is a really clean piece of art. I just love the skull on the hood. The fading and choice of colors is perfect. The orange pinstripe is the only thing that bothers me. It detracts from the classy nature of the paintjob. Perhaps a different color would have worked better. It also appears to conflict with the rear wheel well rather than flowing around it. The carbon fiber detailing is flawless. I would love to see this one on a 1:1 car. Beautiful!

This one is much better than your other entry. The depth in the fire is really there. I just love the licks of flames that are flying out of the side flames. The detail is really nice. Some of the flames on the hood could be a little more random. There appears to be some hard edges that catch your eye at first glance. Mike Lavalle eat your heart out!

To tell you the truth any of your bodies could hold up in second place. They really are nicely done. This one though just caught my eye a little more. There is more shadowing and the colors really pop. The orange, red and yellow compete a little with one another but it still looks nice. It is a little hard to see the streaking out of the star on the top and could have been a little heavier to make it stand out. Nice work!

I felt that this one really deserved first place because it was out of the ordinary and that it had an extreme amount of work put into it. We've all spent hours cutting out our designs to only have half of the detail that went into this one. The figures look just like they popped off the TV screen and onto the truck. The linework is all very consistent and even. I could spend an hour looking at all of the characters on this one. Couple suggestions...some added detail like drop shadows or window outlines could help to add to the body. Also the roof section seems too blank given the amount of detail around the body. I know.....like you wanted to spend any more time on this one than you already did. Very nice work. and Congrats on the win.
Well that's all folks. What a way to end the year. We'll keep it up for 2007. Happy New Year to all of you.
