View Full Version : Question about Motors
Hi, I race nitro now and have pretty much maxed out my GT. And now I would like to get into electric racing because most of the tracks around my house run electric only. I am planning on getting an XXX KE and I already have an M8 radio. SO I want to get the best setup I can so then all I have to do is learn to drive it very well. I was thinking about getting the Turbo35 BL charger, Cyclone C2 speed control and some Trinty Sanyo matched sell packs. But I dont really understand how motors are rated.
The real question...
Whats the differntce between say a 11 turn single and a 11 turn quad? Or like a 12 turn triple? I know a lower turn gives you more power and less run time (I think).. But what do the number of wires do?
Any info would be great.. p.s.. think that setup would do well at the track? thanks

n20,
I would see if stock is a more popular class at the tracks near you before you go mod.
The lower the turn the faster the motor is going to be (it's more complicated than that), but for off-road you really don't need to go below a 12-turn. A single will have more lowend torque, but a quad will have a smoother powerband and slightly higer RMP. Go to the Losi website and checkout some setups of what motors they are using.

hey vex... I would go with the C2 if I were you. Most of the fast guys are running Novak, and I just think it's a better esc.
I'm plenty open to ideas though, it's very important to have a good setup. Because in the end, Brian Kinwald will lose with slow junky stuff.. ;)

i agree i can not stress enough on how important setups are..
BTW from doin a few reading it sounds to me that the c2 is a tad bit better choice as far as esc goes, ive read sumwhere it has a lower resistance.
i assume ur planning on racing the xxx buggy.. u plan on getting a com lathe?
o yea u might wanna check this out http://www.balakracing.com/ it has good info for the "new to electric" crowd like ourselves, lol

vex.. yea, I plan to race the xxx a lot. Because thats pretty much the only thing that people race around here. When we race GT's there will be like 4 or 5 people in the whole race. The other night when I went to the buggy races, there had to be over 40 people.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.. I think if you go to www.teamnovak.com (http://www.teamnovak.com) you can read more about the C2..
As for the comm lathe, I know a few people that heve them. But if I need one, I'll get it..

I just raced electric for the first time on Sunday. I only finished building my FT T3 Sat morning, so I had little practice with it. Ended up winning stock truck B-main , fastest of the slow. ;) I had a few laps that were close to the fast guys, I just need to string em all together. Had a blast. I could get used to the low maintenece. A couple guys remarked about my good throttle control. I credit that to driving my GT with a CV-R.
Currently I'm running a cheapo $50 duratrax esc, and $23 1700 dynamite packs. Don't be so quick to jump in full force with the Visa or whatever. A few guys there spend more money on one pack than I spent on my motor, esc, and a pack. They are still beating me, but I promise you it isn't their $140 Novaks or $80 2400 packs. Some tracks are more competitive than others, however. Larger, more open tracks make electronics a bigger factor. I think it will take me a long time to truly appreciate the really high end stuff. When I can go the full 5 minutes without needing a turn marshall, and still not win, then I'll be shopping for the good stuff. I don't think that will be in the next couple weeks, though. :(

The 7.1 is just as good as the C2. If the fast guys had poop on their cars, would you say that the poop was fast?

Well... Yes, that would make it fast poop. But it would be driver skill that made the poop fast. :D I think I should get back to work now. I've got some users, err umm, I mean computers to fix. It'll make me feel smarter. My ego is hurtin'.
True.. However, I bet the fast guys will be slow if given a slow truck.. I mean, a LOT of it has to do with your driving.. But there was one kid at the track the other night with those dynamite packs and some redy motor. And he couldnt even make the triple that everyone else was clearing with no problem. I like to just get the good stuff to start with and then work on my driving. I took my GT to the track the other day, and there was a Team driver there from Losi. We talked a little about setups and all and then I offerd to let him drive my truck a lap or two. Now in no way could I have beat his Losi XXXNT around the track, but he said that my truck was faster than his and without seeing me drive said I would be able to beat him.
So now my GT is all clean and sitting on the desk like a champ.. ;)

Hey guys, that is cool you are gettin XXX's. we have a huge forum going on in the Vehicle Forum. Fast guys only use Novak http://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/nixweiss.gif Then who is that Matt Francis guy, or whatever his name is... or Mark Pavidas? Are they just nobodies?
Very similar in design, one has lower resistance, that i doubt any of us could notice, when set up the same. The Cyclone2 can have replaceable wires, the 7.1 does not, the 7.1 uses 14AWG wire, whereas, on the Cyclone, you can use any gauge you want...

N2O you are the kind of guy I like to see, get the good stuff in the beggining, and save yourself frustration. Whenever I want to try a new class of oval, I always go with the good stuff. I would go with an C2, and XXL reciever. For batteries, I would try PRO-Match cells(Pro Match (http://www.promatchracing.com)) they are very reasonable. I would probably get like 3 2400's and 3 SMH 3000's, as that would give you plenty of practice packs and race packs. Go with the top cells of course. The T35 is an awsome charger. You may also want to get a Pit Bull so you can have 2 packs charging or use the motor run feature on the T35 while a pack is Charging on the Pit Bull. For motors, I would contact Todd Putnam at Putnampro@aol.com, he can set you up with either stock or mod motors. I would also invest in a nice soldering iron, like a Hakko, They can be bought at null (http://null)Stormer Hobbies (http://www.stormerhobbies.com) and work very good. I think that is about everything you need to know. Also get a good assortment of pinions and spurs so you can work with gear ratios, and get whatever the hot tires are for your track. Just remeber, don't skimp, because in the end you will want the good stuff anyway. cya.

anyways good luck

Thanks a lot for all of the help guys.. I'm pretty sure I know what I need to get now for my XXX. Electric racing is a whole other world from Nitro in a way. But it sounds like it's going to be pretty fun..
thanks
