View Full Version : Micro RC Crawler interest?

Okay, so I have a Micro-T and the thing is way too much fun! But I've always wanted to design a Micro crawler or "Peeble" crawler if you will. I will go 3D with solidworks on this one, but I don't want everything to be custom. I've searched a little and found some different custom rigs people have done, but I'd like to take it to the next level. I'm looking for part you feel could work for a very small scale crawler just a little bigger than the Micro-T. What's out there people?

Thx,

John

I did a little research when I started this project (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?t=222964) and had a hard time finding things that would be small enough. I wanted to keep the same look though, if you don't want to it would be easier.

You might take a look at the Venom Mini-Giant solid axles. It's a 1/20th scale truck, and they are pretty narrow, and you could always run a smaller wheel. I will compare my VMG axles to my Micro-T this weekend and see how close they are.

HCRG, you could look at the Tamiya stuff (supposed to be used for straight line "AA" battery operation) and build your electronics around that. I have actually seen one that was completed with that size body and parts and it had working lights as well. Otherwise, I just sold a New Bright with SkiDoo on a trailer that would have fit your bill. It already had a powered rear axle and steering up front but it wouldn't have been too hard to fabricate parts for 4wd.

thanks for the hints guys. I think axles are going to be my main focus, as the overall size will be determined by them. I'm now staring at my micro-t and wondering what I can do with those parts.....this could be dangerous...
the more I look at what's available off the shelf, the more I want to abandon the idea, and think Mini...not Micro...anyone want to join forces on this one?

I just dont see how a 1/18 scale could do rock crawling. It doesn't have the wheelbase or height

Cheers

Actually, the truck that I want to rcasize is big enough to crawl. It's probably close to the size of some of the minis, I just wanted it to look like the toy did origonally.

Kinda thinking.. the car is so small, how dose it crawl on the rock, without just like driveing on it? =P

Are you serious?? :roll2:
That's like a 1:1 rock crawler owner asking, "How do you crawl on rocks with a 1/10th RC?"
People build 1/24th crawlers/trail rigs with static model bodies and do in scale, axles and all.

1/24 crawlers are quite fun to build and run. You guys need to go here:

I use my X-mod F-150 for some pebble crawling sometimes, it actually does pretty good with 4x4 and a lift kit.

The x-mod trucks are interesting. I might steer clear of the cars, but small scale-ish 4x4 vehicles are hard to come by. I wish Kyosho would make a 4wd Mini-Z Overland!

Whoa. Those ssmt axle'd trucks are awesome. I am going to have to search for something similar to build my own. I have a model perfect for it.
I have always wanted to rc my models, but never thought it was possible. I am going to have to do more reading.

How do you know if a radio control truck has the 'ssmt' axles? How do you identify them, or do they say 'ssmt' on the axle or truck somewhere?

MAtt im hooked now, i was reading this forum and after starting a 1/24 scale road car project im going to start a 4x4 1/24 scale project, ive been reading up for the last hr or 2 on the subject, a SSMT axle is a AXLE Out of a Toys r Us truck, yea the parts are very cheap. The toys r us truck they get the axles out of is called Super Slicks. read up on them they are crazy,

stomperxj

They are actually quite hard to find now; they have been discontinued in the US. Some Canadian Toys R Us stores still have a few left but they are pretty much gone now... I'm glad I stocked up when I did ;)

Super Slicks Monster Truck 1/43 scale is what you are after if you find any...
The 1/24 ones they have at TRU now are not the right ones...

Good luck guys ;)

Mat did you read the preivous posts??? the 1/24s are the Wrong truck man, you need the 1/43 scale :(

I read that, but then read that they had been building them from the 1/24th scale axles as well. I don't know what the difference is between the old ssmt and the new ones, but I guess I will find out. As long as they are 4x4 and have the ability to be steered, I should be able to do something with them. Hopefully.

They are considerably bigger and they would probably work well with a 1/18 build... about the same size as a Mini Z monster truck i think...

Hey stomper, how much bigger is "considerably"? I guess I'm a doofus and not following everyone's thoughts on this, but are people now using 1/43rd scale ssmt axles under a 1/24th scale model truck? Is it because the old 1/24th scale ssmt axles were smaller than the new ones? Hope everyone followed what I just said... ;)

Yes matt- the old 1/43 axles are a perfect size for 1/24 models; the newer 1/24 SSMTs are way bigger, and would fit a 1/18 body better, and they are not as scale looking either....

Here's some pics of the new ssmt's I ordered. The axles are way bigger, and kinda dorky looking, but some dremeling has fixed that! I am going to close the axles back up and streamline them a bit with some styrene and epoxy.

I mocked up the chassis and springs with a Chinet paper plate. It's very stiff and easy to work with. I will then transfer the design to styrene. I'm going to try and make the leaf springs out of a 2 liter plastic soda bottle. I have no idea if that will even work, but who knows, right? Oh, and the body is an Xmod F-150 that I'm using.
