Best Paint Competition – January 2007
Please read this carefully and in its entirety!! There are a few changes for the new year.
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of January and will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, January 31, 2007.
Restrictions: None!!! Go wild
(See accompanying thread for this years schedule.)
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry (Now three classes. Think of it as creating a higher class then Pro. Intermediate is the old Pro.)
Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.
Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.
Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro and Intermediate classes are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.
Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
TBD will judge this month’s Pro Class. The intermediate class will be judged by MAXXTRAXX. Finally, the amateur class will be judged by SerpentKing101..
Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition. .
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

This is a 1/18th protoform Mazda 6 body I painted in a Evel Knievel theme for a customer to use on his XRay M18.
Paints used are Fascolor, SpazStix. The 2 stripes running down the center of the body are Mirror Chrome, it is hard to tell in the outdoor pics, but you can see it in the last pic.
Graphics cut out of blue painter's tape and liquid mask.
Class is Intermediate.

Im glad we have more than 2 entrees in pro. There maybe a few months until we weed out all the pro guys from the intermediate class, but give it time. I would rather have someone feel their earned the promotion, than feeling cheated into an impossible challange.

I see all these awesome bodies, but are there prizes given out to the winner?
sometimes you get published in the magazine. :D NOW that's ego inflation when all your buddies see your body in 1st place paint title.
There is nothing quite like seeing your paintjob in the magazine. I was published in the February issue and it was just awesome. There are always a lot of great paintjobs done around here and it is a great honor to be selected for the magazine.
What a great community to be a part of. We all share a great talent and love of creating art........The real prize is creating something original and with your own hands that others can appreciate. Making a little money on the side to pay for the hobby doesn't hurt as well........

I have always been against material and monitary prizes for the winners. It was one of the big decisions when I first went about creating the competitions.
Here is my logic:
1) the better the prize, the harder someone will try to cheat or find a loophole.
2) Who is responsible if the prize does not show up at the winners door step? Some people may not care, but others may become angry and/or feel cheated. I dont want to create any unneeded animostity between members or this competition.
3) I dont feel that it is fair to give away a prize one month and not another.
4) Im sure it violates the advertising clause in the RCZone rules.
Having said that, if a reliable company who already has an advertising contract with Airage (or wishes to enter one) contacts me PRIVATELY maybe something can be worked out. Until then I will not allow prizes publicly given out to the winners. If you feel like rewarding a winner, contact them privately and do not bring it up here.
A few of the winners' bodies have made it into the magazines. I am trying to get all the winners in the magazine, but space is always at a premium. Having had a few bodies in magazines before, there is nothing more cool that looking at a printed page with your pride and joy shining on the glossy page. I feel that this and bragging rights :D should be enough.

Ridiculously awesome.
Killer job Respo, but obviously you dont need me to tell you that. Your skills are unmatched, and the funny thing is, they are constantly improving (I've made up my mind that this isn't humanly possible, so you must be an alien or a superhuman of the airbrush or something :D )

Well, so this is my first comptition body. I figured a 6 color race style would be ambitious enough for one night, so I decided against trying to learn to use my liquid mask and trying to get clean window border pinstripe things. I might attempt some liquid mask in a week or two. Anyway, this body was a lot of fun and I'm really happy with how it came out. What do you guys think?

I am a Jeep owner so its nice to see that you knew enough to stray from all the bright colors and wild designs! Nice clean pinstripes. Though the design isn’t extremely difficult you did a nice job on it and it looks good!

I really like this design, looks like it should be on the cover of a magazine! Great outlines, they are nice and even throughout the whole shell and the colors really work with each other! Nice to see that you took the time to paint the lights and grill, it really adds to a shell. Beautiful fades…But I would like to see better pics of this shell. It would help bring you more customers, and help us judges out.

I have to give it to you, you seem to have true flames nailed, though I would like to see some more vibrant colors, especially in the yellow. I have tried and tried to get true flames down and its extremely hard… Nice work!

I like the overall concept of this shell, but its just something about the tan/goldish color… It just doesn’t do to much for me… I believe white would have tied the whole shell together much better. Good work with the drop shadows though, it’s a nice detail that most wouldn’t notice at first… For me the black lines and rivets are a little heavy though. And there are some places where there is overspray.

Overall I like this shell, though there are some areas where it could be improved… For me the black for the shadowing is a little heavy, the pinstripes vary in thickness, and there is some bleeding. But I have to had it to you, it’s a nice looking shell, especially for an 1/18 car body! Nice work!

Very unique shell design, something you don’t see everyday…. Great work with the shadowing, not to dark, nor light, but there are a few spots where there it has two shadows… The outlines look great, nice an even throughout the whole shell. The blue tribal design on the sides is a nice contrast to the red graphics down the center. And I have to say the window trim is nice….

A pretty simple design overall… A nice outline around the graphics and window trim would have brought this shell up a notch or two! The fading in the graphics up front is great, nice and even! Is there a blueish/purple faded around the side windows? And I’d like to see the ghost flames painted darker, to me it just looks like overspray…

I really like this shell, though its not the most difficult or busiest… Its just classy… It was planned out well, though I would have liked to see the chrome stripe wrap around the entire shell. The marbling up front is beautiful! Nice color choices!

Though a dark shell I like this scheme a lot! The tribal design works well with the colors! From what I can tell the outlines are all nice and even, but I would like to see the checkers go father back on the shell, behind the rear wheels… Nice matching of the purple, and anodized aluminum!

Beautiful dragon, definitely shows a lot of time and patients! Though I would like to see its body wrap around the shell. The smoke is a very nice touch! The scales on the roof look great, but I would have liked to see more of them else where on the shell. To break up the pure black. Great job man! Like I said, the dragon is awesome, I just feel that more could have been done to take 1st place.

This is another shell that I really like… Colors work together great! And personally I like the streaking in the blue. But that’s just me lol. The drop shadows appear to be a little heavy in some spots, but that may just be the pics. I especially like the pattern on the hood. I also like the unique window trim.

The colors of this shell work nicely with each other. I really like how creative you got with your dremel accident! And the design looks to be pretty symmetrical! But the thing that sets this shell apart from others for me are the lights and grill! They look great!

Overall I like the design and color choice with this shell, looks like something you’d actually see on the streets, but there is some room for improvement. The lines aren’t as straight and crisp as the Jeep shell. This is another situation where better pics would have helped the shell.

Another nice looking shell from ZMan! I really like the front half of the shell, nice and clean. Good work with the stars, those can get really tedious! I would like to see more detail in the rip. It would bring the whole shell together! The number pod area seems to have some overspray issues though. White and black and what looks to be chrome are all mixed together, same with the wing. Nice touch to paint the roll bar, it’s a detail that some painters overlook. It really helps bring a shell to the next level. May I ask what shell that is?

For your first airbrush job, that is pretty impressive. I've done a few and still have problems ruining bodies. It also helps that I'm a DSM fan.
That said, the only gripes I have paint wise is the stripe design running down the middle of the car. The side designs and the body are pretty curvy and those straight lines kind of breaks all of that up. I also would have really liked for it to join with the side designs alot better also.
The hugest thing are the pictures themselves, theyres way too much compression going on. I couldnt make out whats there and what isnt, and it would be unfair to just give the benefit of the doubt. That in itself hurt the score significantly.

Heh, patriotic goodness is always awesome.
This body definitely has the stars, but the stripes are lacking here. Also, how the red was painted kind of gives it a odd trim look on the sides, and dare i say it, that "junker look" with the hood, as if it were borrowed from another truck. I also noticed some uneven masking, and I wouldve liked to see some cleaner lettering and more even star spacing as well.
A nice set of red and whites would have done wonders, I think, similar to z-mans entry.

Its true fire! Whats not to like?
I would have liked to see the flames a bit more bright and vivid. It has more of a bright smoke look it it than flames. Also, I feel that the licks would have been more consistently shaped, like the roof and the front of the hood is.
As it is now, it kind of has this surrealness to it(esp the side), which is all kinds of awesome in my book, but I'm pretty positive that's not what you're going for.
Each time you try it, it gets better. I say keep at it, then maybe you, adcrc and zielke can take over the world or something. :)

I got to see this body completed earlier elsewhere in the forum. The before and after with the decals is pretty amazing.
This design is pretty simple, yet it does the job of complementing the car very well. That, combined with tastefully applied decals and near-flawless execution, and I'd call it a job well done.
There was only one minor painting error I could find, which was the orange stripe at the left front. Also, one of the CF stickers looked to be stretched to meet the wheelwell, but I had to really reach to find something like that.

More pics!
I like all these little details in the body that i think are pretty awesome, like the checker flag getting its own pinstripe. The color combinations not only complement each other, but the chassis itself, that keep it looking good on and off the track.
I think an outdoor shot would have brought more out of the yellow, that would have really made the color pop. But other than that, I say good job! I just wish we could see the front of the body.

Sure you didn't just buy it? And why isnt it in intermediate?
One word: Clean! Colors are all nice and even with no bleeding, the shadowing looks to be about flawless, and it looks like your got your mirror chrome working nicely. I need to give my bottle a stern talking to.
The design is angular, just like the body, and they complement each other well. The stripe throws it off some, but everything still all coherent. Overall, an excellent paint job that would be worthy in higher classes. Congratulations!

Hi all,
Mab asked me to judge this competition and I didn’t realize how difficult it would be given that they are all great bodies!!! I don’t see any mistakes in any of them (judging this on a laptop but even so, I don’t seen any real mistakes)vso most of my judging comes down to personal preference for design and how difficult I thought it was to paint. Keep in mind, I know this is subjective judging and realize any of these cars would have won just a year or two ago. What is even more remarkable to me was how many intermediate bodies I saw that looked pro level.

The window treatment really ups this one. I get the feeling this is supposed to be a full size replica but its missing something for me. While whats there is great, it doesn’t feel complete, almost as though the Coke designs were add ons rather than intended focal points. Something to enhance those would have brought more out in the over all paint job.

Simply awesome work! Your skills have really grown over the past few years! You’ve always had a great sense of color but its amazing how well executed this body is compared to the way they were when I was last running the contest. My only knock against it is the design, which is crazy by intent but a little too many design elements are included to make a cohesive design.

I think outfitter540 hit the nail on the head with the difference between the Pro's and the Intermediates. It seems that the Int's have the know-how, but just haven't reached the level of the Pro's when it comes to laying the paint down.
Oh well, just more practice!

Thanks hauntedmyst!! I realize just how hard it is to judge these bodies and I hope people can look back on how you judged and use it in future competitions (especially the pro class).
Im estatic that people are interested in breaking entrance records and im even more happy that the difference between the pro and intermediate class is being understood. Im working on some ideas to move the competitions to the next level. I feel that they have existed mostly unchanged for years. Other websites have taken up the idea, but now its time to lift it above the fray and make winning the best and most coveted honor on the net.
