I was wondering if it was possible to paint (w/ airbrush) the body parts of an RC car with chrome paints (Spaz Stix and Alclad II)????

You would have to remove the parts to paint them but what i'm wondering is would you get the same chrome-mirror finish on the black plastic car parts as you do with the lexan bodies?

How about durability? What about topping it off with something?

Has anyone heard of this being done?

yes, it will "plate"....but as far as durability, i dont think so. Even clear-coated, i think it would flake off.

The SpazStix Mirror Chrome would give the parts a chrome look, but unfortunately it is a very fragile finish and scratches/scuffs easily.

What about using something thats made for plastics exposed to the outside.... such as Plastikote Bumper Chrome Paint which comes in a spray can.

What do you guys think??

shiny aluminum....not quite chrome. spaz stix is true chrome, thru and thru. If you are going for a shelf queen, you can do it, but running it??? i think it would be a mess in no time.

I think no matter what you did, it would come out looking lke shiny aluminum.

Not if you use Alsa chrome paint. :p It is probably overboard because you would have to clear it with an automotive clear. Are you wanting to paint the lexan parts or the plastic parts on the chassis?

Did you read the previous post?

He specificically said that he wanted to paint the body parts of his rc car.

I agree with z-man entirely. If it is a true chrome finish you want, it is better left to a shelf queen because it would almost certainly flake off. The plasticote or other alternatives might bond to the plastic parts of the car better, but it might not give that realistic chrome look. Either way it is a compromise, but if you still plan to do it I'd love to see photos and hear about the results.
