The 5th annual Radio Control Car Action Monster Madness race will be held at Wolcott Hobby and Raceway in Wolcott CT. We’ll post the dates as soon as we have them.

... and we now have the dates: June 22, 23, and 24.

Oh man, this is awesome. Even though I'm in CT, the old place was a little far to pay to race, but if it's in Wolcott I will definitely show up.

I know it's still early. But do you know if there will there be an electric MT class again this year? I'd like to try something different.

Will there be a big jump competition again also? I have some toys I'd like to send into orbit :D If not, I can set up the big jump competition.

Anyway, regardless of the location. It should be fun. I plan to attend races at both locations this year.

I think we're going to have the same classes we had last year. Everyone seems to like it that way. Wolcott has a ton of land to play with at their shop and we do plan on having other events besides racing during the weekend.

There's plenty of space for parking and pitting. They've had several big events including the Pro Series and there with no problems with parking and pitting.

At Wolcott, the "paved" area next to the existing pit space can be used by guys like me who bring their own tables. This more than doubles the available pit space. Remember, while RC Madness is a fantastic track, they have no outdoor pit tables and don't allow the off-road guys tp use the indoor pits; you always have to bring your own table.

MarkWesterfield

Seriously? You think the pit area is small? You can pretty much pit anywhere on the property. Most of the track supplied pit space isn't even used during the big races because so many people bring their own tents and tables.

I see the value of the event but cannot see copyright laws protecting the name of an event. There really is no ownership to it, other than the event being held and run by the track not the magazine. I'm sure somewhere in this country some other track has held a "Monster Madness" race by that name.

By the way Madness lets you pit inside the back. Don't get me wrong, I like Wolcott and race there alot, but the race way co created by Madness and Car Action years ago. Let's be realistic, if it was created at a different track and not RC Madness, would it still have been named "Monster Madness"

One last thing, why no copyright fight over the 1/18 scale nationals that you also lost to RC Drvier also. Still sounds like spite to me.

Smib
01-05-2007, 12:12 PM
Ok, now that I think about it the pit area is pretty big, and is fairly empty even on race days. However, on those race days the parking lot is packed. I haven't been there is a little while, but unless they opened up the right side of the track up behind the existing dirt lot, I still don't see how an event this large will be able to fit all the entrants. On the other hand, I don't think that wasn't thought about and dealt with.

Back to the race:
> Would anyone be interested in a possible rock crawling competition?
> Anyone know any possible trophy girls? If not, then it will be Kevin and he doesn't look too good in a bikini!
> Would anyone be interested in a possible showdown race between the winners of a few of the classes? This would put electric vs. nitro in a race.

Basically, let us know what you want to see.

How exactly do you judge a crawling competition? It's not like they're racing across the rocks, or are they?

I think I'll be entering the electric MT class. And one of the truggy classes for sure.

A judge records certain penalties such as using reverse or hitting a cone. In my opinion, we should just have a non-judged exhibition. If there's rocks there, we can set up a course and even let people try it out. I'm sure the local club ( CT Rock Crawlers (http://www.ctrockcrawlers.com)) would love to put on a demo.

I know it won't be a popular thing to say but I too think that 1/8th buggies should be removed from the line up. Having competed in 3 of the 4 Monster Madness races, I've always wondered my 1/8th scale buggies and 1/10th scale trucks were run at a "Monster" event. Don't they have enough races? Can't we have just ONE race where it's all about big tire action and Monsters not playing 2nd fiddle to any class? Don't get me wrong, on a weekly basis I LOVE the diversity of vehicles that this hobby brings - heck, my primary class is itself a red-headed step child (Electric MT/truggy) - but for this one event, I'd think some boundaries are in order.

To save the race? It doesn't matter if 100 or 10 people show up. This race is about getting together and having fun with our monster trucks. The 1/8 scale class gave people another class to run if they wanted to. I don't know where you get your information but you might want to make sure that it's correct before posting.

I'm totally torn on the 1/8-scale buggy class. One, I'll race it. And two, it's good for the track because it's a large class. In contrast, I like the idea of a monster only race. In the end, I'm fine either way, but think it's best to just keep 1/8-scale buggies in.

For those that want to ban buggys, why not ban those truggys too. After all their just buggys with training wheels :)

I use to run my nitro MT with electric MTs. Hanging out all day for a 5 min race, not my idea of fun. (sorry Dave, no offense) Yes, I know your saying if you can't get it done in 5 min..... Well if your truck can't run for over 5 mins........

There are some debates that will never be won....

I see it kind of like one of those rides at a theme park...you know...you must be this tall to ride this ride....same thing with this race, your tire diameter must be this large to race...so truggies would be in. Not to flame, Matt/Kev....but at this point in time, there isn't much for anyone to talk about. At least not until you guys or Lester makes a definitive decision as to what is being run and sets a date in stone (rain date not withstanding) for us. You did ask for people to post as to what they wanted, and while some have been more aggressive with their opinion, they have responded to that question. Personally, I will likely be there no matter what runs, unless that date coincides with one of the RCPro dates. Given that, I know I will want to get as much track time as I can, therefor, I would vote to keep the buggies in.

I forget which track it was, but one of the tracks near Wolcott (maybe in Jersey or NY), split their big event between two weekends. Maybe the same can be done. You know put the buggies on the first weekend with the electric trucks or something. Then put the MT's and Truggies on the following weekend. If i'm thinking correctly the MT class had 25 entries last summer.

I would definetly be satisfied if RCCaraction hosted a day of MT endurance racing. One race $65.00 buy-in 4 person teams and a 3hour main :) That would be cool. It could be called "MT Supremacy Race"

it's all about the money. the 1/8 buggies are there so the track owner can make more money.

also the Monster Truck class has been on the decline the last couple of years so if they didn't have a big enough turnout a few years back then they definatly wouldn't now.

RespirologyRC
01-07-2007, 11:46 PM
Who says MT's are in a decline? If i'm not mistaken they are the hottest things selling. The reason why people chose to race buggies over a traditional MT is because of handling. Buggy racers can't handle or figure out an MT's suspension; it's too difficult for their tiny little brains. SO as a result they go out and buy a buggy. :) LOL

MarkWesterfield
01-08-2007, 09:22 AM

You know what really burns me and may be just may be KevinH or MatH can fix this: Every year it's obvious that more buggy racers turn out for this race than MT's (I'll admit to this), but why are the MT guys constantly being put last in the lineup to race? I think the MT guys should have OUR qual before the buggy quals.

Every where i race the MT's are always placed last and then when it's time for marshals to come out there are none. All the buggy guys just pack up and go home. I guess this explains the why the class is the way it is.

Now with that said dont you think if you made the race more appealing to people who buy Monster Trucks either for racing or Bashing might come to the race just for Monster Trucks.. I mean really people were talking about one race with the name Monster MADNESS.. If Monster trucks are selling isnt that a way for RCCA to get more advertisements.. By hosting a Race for the Hottest Selling Product they Advertise.. again it's only my opinion..

This is from R/C PRO rules...

Monster Truck

Scale - 1/10-1/8
Description:
To be a Monster Truck, the lowest point of the engine must sit at least 1.5" inches above the lowest point along the front-back centerline when compressed (usually the "skid plates").
To tech questionable MTs, remove the wheels, place MT on flat surface, compress the vehicle fully and a ruler (or 1.5" gauge) could be used vertically to measure the engine above the surface.
The following trucks are examples that fit within the above definition: T (and S) -Maxxes, Savage, MGT, Revo, TNX/TC and LST providing no modifications have been made to make the vehicle not meet the Monster Truck rules.

Minimum track width - - - - - - - - - - - - - Continuous 10 feet (same as 8th scales)
Wheel base - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Minimum 12 inches
Wheelbase -------------------------------------- Maximum 16 inches
Vehicle width maximum ---------- outside tire to outside tire ----------- 19.5 inches
Transmission - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Must be multi speed gear reduction. Diffs inside the transmission are allowed only. Front and rear brakes allowed.
Engine - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - .12ci to .28c
Carb ------------------------------------------------- No size restriction. Carb must mount securely to the motor.
Exhaust ------------------------------------------- Pipes must meet the 85 decibel limit and have no movable parts in them.
Minimum weight - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - .12ci to .20.999ci Small blocks: 7lbs. 6 oz.minimum weight.
.21 to .28 Big blocks: 4300 grams (~9.5 pounds) minimum weight
Maximum weight for the safety of turn marshals ------------------- 13 pounds 6 ounces
Fuel Tanks - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Single fuel tanks only.
Fuel Tank Volume Rule ----------------- Based on motor size. .20999 or less will be limited to a maximum of 150mililitres/cc ------------- .21 and over is limited to a maximum of 175mililitres/cc. This includes fuel line from tank to carb and filter(s).
Bodies - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Truck or SUV (no buggy or car bodies allowed )
Bumpers - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Bumpers are optional. If used, must not extend further than 1" past the body on the front and rear.
Rear Spoiler/wing - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A spoiler/wing is optional.
Skid Plates - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Skid Plates must not extend further than 1" past the body on the front and rear.
Wheels --------------------------------------------- Must be manufactured for Monster Trucks.
Wheel Mounting -------------------------------- Wheel mounting - Must be securely mounted at all times.
Tires - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Must be rubber only. No tires created for other vehicle types even if they fit the specifications will be allowed. Cutting or modifying the tread is allowed. Modifying the tire carcass by sectioning or narrowing is prohibited. Due to the varying sizes of wheels available for Monster Trucks it IS legal to trim the mounting bead of a tire produced for the Monster Truck class to make it fit a Monster Truck rim. Example - Bowtie on a REVO wheel. All tire measurements reference the carcass dimensions and does not include the tread depth or width.
Tire diameter- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Minimum - 5.1" (mounted)
Tire width - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Minimum - 2.75"(mounted)

I could copy out ROAR's MT rules but there basically the same. As you can see there's more to the MT class than BIG TIRES. Like NO center diff and engine mount hight. So truggys should be out, too.

So are Proline Crowd Pleazers not allowed then because they don't look like truck body or SUV body? And shouldn't Revo's NOT be allowed in with the BB class because they obviously weigh less than a normal MT? Man i should be more of stickler when i go racing. That would make it easier for me to win :)

I can see it now; "All of you MT guys running CP bodies; hmm Ya, their not allowed, oh and all of you guys who are racing Revo's that don't weigh 9.5lbs or more--ya your out too!" LOL that would leave me and a couple of LST2 owners to race in the BB MT class. BUGGYS. I have also raced MT and plan to run it again next season. My tiny little brain can figure out MT suspension and handling just fine. I just choose to run a vehicle that's made for racing. I got sick of having to dump a bunch of $ into a MT, just to make it race worthy. When it comes to durability, I"ll put my 8th scale buggy up against my $3,000 suppermaxx any day. Or any MT for that reason. I prefer to spend my $ on tires, fuel, engines, racing. Not rebuilding my MT.

I run mostly at Wolcott Hobby. Hope to meet you and run against you at Monster madness. I hope to run both MT and Buggy there.

Most of Lester's events (save for RCPro) have been sign up on day of, but you could call em to be sure. Dunno if I'll get to go to MI, so if I don't, I'll get to meet you there which will be cool. Even if I don't race, I know I'll still go, just to hang out, help pit or corner if needed :)

In all honesty I had a great time at Monster Madness. I will be there also. In regards to those Staten Island guys; there crazy, but cool. They were pitted directly in front of Team Suckfish, and couldn't get any of their MT's to run for more than 5 minutes if that. Good group though. They swiped the concourse trophy from me because RCCA decided that trucks also had to have a lot of bling bling under the hood---WHO KNEW??

As for my SM.
1. I don't like rebuilding my tranny every gallon or so and I'm not spending over $200 for a used OTB.
2. Sick of the pins on the dogbone end of the cvds falling out. And not spending $120 for 4 new ones.
3. Arms wear out and you can't get new ones.
4. I like to race something I can get parts for.
5. I could go on forever, but we're getting way off topic.

It will be rebuilt for monster madness and for the pro-series.

gangsta; I run at RCMadness and sometimes (sometimes) practice at rc excitement. I don't really care for rc excitement because of thier track. tons of rocks sticking up out of the ground. Coming down and hitting a rock doesn't sound like fun to me. I race regularly all summer long in the BB class with my supermaxx. I have a 100% UE Supermaxx (thunder chassis, rc-x, vbs, 8 gear spyder, strobe slipper, 16tooth bell, 4 shoe ue clutch, otb 1st and 2nd gears, 3 sets of SUper6's, dace 23's, titanium 6mm cvd's, SSaver, strobe limiters, tony screws, Respiro custom paint job :),titanium UE pillow balls, set back arms, UE supershocks, and plenty of spare parts to keep me going for a long time. The only thing I do not have on my truck is the Strobe Sprong. I feel that the strobe slipper is more than enough for the job. I like to race with a GS 25 engine. Everytime this thing breaks i rebuild it and use it. I'll use it until the sleeve is dead. I have a RB 728 as a backup but don't particulary care for the torque or lack their of.

I know my truck is some what antiquated but it handles the track at the madness very nice and can take a licking and keep on ticking. I have it dialed to the point where i don't make many changes to my setup unless it's changing clutch shoes, rebuilding my engine, or cleaning my truck. I check the OTB and super6 3-4 weeks or every 2 gallons. I don't race with any super hyper modded engine in it so the super6 and otb aren't being abused. Now if i had a VG30 or something huge in it i would probably do break down checks a hole lot sooner than my normal 3-4 week intervals.

RespirologyRC, I look forward to running against you and your SM. I run the Thunder chassis, with UEs older style diff (ultra lites), supper6, UE top shaft, strope slipper. I run the moded traxxas 1st 2nd gear (just replace it every gallon). I busted an rc-x arm and at the time could not get a new one so I swithed to RPM arms. SSaver, UE shocks, dace 23s, UE cvd's (with plenty extras). I guess you could say it's only 75% SupperMaxx. I'm planing on going back to a small block. I also have enough spare parts to keep me going for a long time.

The 2007 RCCA Monster Madness event is going to be a great race. I am looking forward to it. It looks as if the changes made are going to breathe new life into the already fun monster truck event.

I personally would like to see it more monster truck oriented, since it was designed to be more for the MT's. I wouldn't go as far as excluding everything else, but I would definitely put more focus on the MT classes. If it were a buggy event, I wouldn't expect focus on the MT's. There are plenty of buggy races all over the country though.

Now, on with the Monster Madness. Traxxas will most definitely be there. I myself, Mike Battaile, Bobby Tillman, and couple others may be there to help out Traxxas racers and to also have fun in some of the events there. I plan to do more than just race at this one. Not sure what yet, but I want to try out one of the other contests that Kevin H and the rest of the RCCA crew is planning on. I can't wait.

Mark your calendars, because Traxxas will be there. :)

LOL, I love the enthusiasm. I'm sure they will get a date worked out that will make everyone happy. I don't want any excuses for any MT racers not to show up to the Monster Madness. This is 'THE' monster truck race to hit in the northeast, and I have a blast at this event every year.

I like hanging out with all of you monster truckers in that part of the country. You guys (and gals) really dig it. It's cool.

Bring whatever MT you got, just don't bring it weak.... ;)

You might want to check into our contingency program that we are offering for the Monster Madness race this year. There will be cash money up for grabs in the standard monster truck class (or the small block MT class - depending on what classes there will be). We will have more details soon (on the Traxxas site), and RCCA will get all of the info too as soon as it is all lined out.

I hope to see everyone there!!!

We here at The R/CMTRA are very excited in joining RCCA in this great and exciting event coming this June 22-24, 2007 @ Wolcott. We have a track layout for this event on the side-by-side R/C Monster Truck portion of the event.

If you wish to race on a Monster course designed and detailed just like the tracks at a USHRA event. We will do just that for the 1/10th scale R/C Monsters. We are determined to help make this RCCA event one of the best events possible. So, don't miss it. If things work out for the best The R/CMTRA may be a part of this awesome event from here on in. Help support the hobby and your local race track.

A couple of "Q's"
1. Can I run a 1/8 scale wing on my Jato for the race?
2. Can I run the TRX 3.3 engine for the race?
KevinH - I just got off the phone with Walcott and they said that the date hasn't changed. When I asked, they said it was still June 8 9 & 10. So what is the date?

Thanks,
JJ

I just went to the WOlcott web page and couldn't find any info about this event. I'm guessing they don't want to promote it. When i traveled down to NC to race at The Farm 2, their web site recommend hotels and things to do around the area. THat was an awsome track, which i will be attending this year. Com'on Wolcott put some info on your web page for those of us that haven't been to your track before

I don't see why you couldn't run a 1/8-scale wing and a 3.3. This race is all about having fun. There really aren't any rules. The dates that you have listed are correct. June 8, 9, and 10. See you there.

Lester is one of the coolest and easy going track owners out there so pitting a trailor shouldn't be a problem. Aycoth and Danny Morse have pitted there trailers at wolcott before.

I had a great time at all (4) monster madness races held in the past and looking forward to another weekend hanging out and racing. Wolcott has alot of pitting but if you want to be up front (get there early)

Hey Steve, time to gear that revo higher for wolcott !! Have to keep in front of KevinH....hehe

There will be designated areas for trailers and Campers if needed. Please call the shop in advance so I will be made aware of who needs space.

Thanks guys,

Just trying to avoid total confusion...hopefully Kev, Les, and RCMTRA can all get together here...In a post on Wolcott's forum, dated this past Fri, March 9...Les posted the 2007 outdoor schedule he has planned. I offer this direct quote...
"June 22, 23, 24 Rc Car Action and Wolcott Hobby present Monster Madness 5 Friday practice from 11am till 7pm, Saturday qualifying, Sunday mains!! "
On a positive note, Ive heard that outdoor club racing may begin as early as Sunday, March 25, weather permitting. Let's get ready to burn some nitro :):):)

I have to check on a few things tomorrow to see what the real dates are. I'm a little confused on the date now myself. We'll put a final stamp on the date as soon as I can get all this straightened out. It looks like the 8, 9, and 10 are not the correct dates as a Pro-series is that weekend. I think the later June dates might be correct. Sorry for the confusion. I have a thousand things going on right now. Wolcott Hobby, RCMTRA, and I have a meeting next weekend to figure everything out so I have to make sure the dates are correct by then. Again I'm sorry for the confusion.

The correct dates are: June 22-24!
