Alot of people at my LHS have deans plugs. I am thinking of upgrading as soon as i get my new car. Which ones should I get.(2-plug or 3-plug, pigtails etc.) And how do u install them?
I have Deans 2 Pin Ultra plugs and they are great. Get the 2 pin. The pig tails are the female plug already soldered onto a 5 inch piece of wire. On the back of the 2 pin package it says how to solder them and put on the heat shrink tubing.
Hope this Helps

female on batts, male on ESC. If your charger has the Tamiya style connector replace it with a male Deans. If it has the gator clips then I wouldnt worry about changing them. They will clip onto the Deans plugs with no problem.

when u go to get them, the male will be called "ultra plug" and the female will be called female.

The best way to wire your electronics to prevent shorts is...
ESC - motor(female) batt(male)
Motor - male
batteries - female
charger - male
This prevents the esc's motor leads to short out (if you use a motor connector) in case you power up your electronics without a motor connected. Using female connectors on battery packs prevents any exposed contacts that could short out on any number of things. (tools, graphite?, hardware)

You don't have to use connectors on anything. Some people solder their battery and motor directly to their ESC. I use connectors on my motor and battery just because it's easier to remove the motor and clean it, rather than setting up my soldering iron and everything.
So, no, you don't have to use connectors, it's just easier. If you take good care of the connectors, I don't see why people still solder all their connections. I think RCCA tested the resistance of some connectors and deans ultra plugs had LOWER resistance than the 12ga wire they used for the tests... hehe
