I was trying to think of how to make "cracking paint" almost like having a car that's from the 70/80's and the paint on the hook cracks from weather/sun/age. I want to try cracked red paint with chrome backing (so the cracks would actually look crome) Anyone got a good tutorial for cracked paint ? haha (if you tell me to paint it red and crash it a couple times I'm gunna scream)

I'm guessing this is done with a sponge ?

after you get the base ready. if painting properly from the inside, pending body type. try a stencil withcracks, ie:skull masters. spray the cracks the colors and positions desired then base it with a lite yellow or white prior to main coat. also i've used primers. remember haze it lighly as your creating a faded look. then put your base on.

Yeah they have been hitting every forum lately with the "R/C stencils" a.k.a. airbrush tattoos. Dude give it a rest.

I wasn't looking for a stencil however. This looks more like a sponge technique...

did anyone actually look at the screenshot ?!?

That definitely looks like a sponge job, but nothing like cracking to me. If you like that look try a few different sponges, maybe a foam brush, or even something like a steel wool pad, but obviously not actually steel wool.

Maybe use a paint that doesn't flex with the body real well like the polycarb stuf does. Maybe a latex spray paint or an enamel spray...(someone else may know better). After it is dried (use hair dryer and let it dry REAL WELL, not just hot and damp), bend and flex the body to see if the paint will crack. Then back it with your chrome you want to use. Try it if you feel like it. I've never tried it but it is an idea.

paint the inside of the body chrome, then paint the outside of the body with a thick coat of red, then hair-dry it before the paint has a chance to cure. Theres your cracks. :D

I asked around on this and had some painters suggest that if you spray a water based paint, and then before it's fully cured, back it with lacquer paint, it will shrink and pull cracks, similar to crocskin or dried ground.

Hope it helps. Let us know if it works.

:D That is a pretty cool idea...

However I would stay away from paints with latex - while they will crack, they will also pull the body in weird positions and especially the sides, will not be straight down like the bodies' sides are intended to be, but curved inwards towards the chassis. I remember my first few bodies, I painted with a blue auto paint, because I didn't want to pay the $7 for polycarbonate paint :roll2: It was.... a mess :p

Use Parma Faskolor paints and put too thick a coat on. Heat it with a blowdryer and it will crackle like you are wanting. Back that with chrome or silver to show "metal" behind the flaking paint. The pic that you linked looks like sponge or it can also be done by wadding up a plastic bag a lot and then pressing it bunched up into fresh paint. Back that up with a darker color and you get the effect you were looking for.

Heh, late is better than never.

I got my hands on a micro-t as well (fun as hell on the foam track and messing around at night) Now I'm trying to figure out how to make a body for that which matches my revo. Little difference when your going from 1/10th (really 1/9th) to 1/32 ;)
