I have been looking around for a good rock crawler and I ordered the parts to make a SW2 crawler a couple days ago. I am going to model it after me and my dad's real jeep. Here is what I am using:
1. Proline Masher 2000 tires with HPI Black Spike wheels
2. SW2 Chassis
3. Integy 55 turn lathe motor
4. Hitec 645MG Servo
5. Mtroniks waterproof esc
6. Stampede Transmission
7. TLT Kit
8. Jeep body
There is also some other stuff. I will post everything I got if anyone wants me to. Also I cut the tire foams down.
Here is a pic of what I have now besides the tlt. I am still waiting on the tranny and motor. It should come today.

Here's what I'm going to get it to look like. I'm getting as close as I can.

Also if you want me to post a pic of how I trimmed the foams then just say so. This is my first build so go easy on me. And i'm only 15.

If anyone is looking at this thread then I will keep posting pics but if nobody is interested then ill stop because i don't have the time to do 2 if nobody looks at it. I also have one on rccrawler.com.

those are IMEX tires,, they look like your dads ones.
can you post a link to the chassis ?
what are you using for the driveshafts and links for the axles ?
savage100
01-14-2007, 01:06 PM
The link for the chassis is www.bendercustoms.com but I got it from www.rcpcrawlers.com. The axles are stock tlt ones and i'm using jato driveshafts. Ill post pics of them soon. And i got my pede tranny but motor didn't come yet. I have a rustler laying around and since i can't get the pede tranny together yet im just going to take the tranny out of the rustler and use that until i get the other one put together.
savage100
01-14-2007, 01:18 PM
Here's some pics of the axles and the chassis. The last one is the rustler tranny. I haven't cleaned it yet and i should have it on the chassis in a little bit. And i got the pede tranny from www.bbyracing.com.

I am going to mount the battery in the front. I am not quite sure how yet but once it gets together a little bit more ill figure it out.

I am stuck on what screws to mount the tranny with. I can't find any ones that are long enough.
savage100
01-14-2007, 03:32 PM
I figured out the problem. My chassis didn't come with them. It is supposed to come with 2 other screws but i didn't get them. Ill pick some up from a hardware store or hobby shop.

01-14-2007, 10:20 PM
I got the pede tranny done. The motor won't be in for 4-6 weeks! I can't stand to look at it for that long. Here's some pics of the tranny.

I dicided to use my rustler motor for now since my other one won't come in a while. I should get the screws that i need to mount the tranny today then ill be able to get going again. Hopefully i can get my dad to take me to the hobby store so i can get the jeep body. And when i'm done i plan on making a video of it.

Im curious what you mean by "trim the foams"? If you mean tire foams...I am no crawler, so don't take this as Gospel...but I believe most crawlers do not use any foams at all. This allows the tire to wrap around and grab rocks better.
savage100
01-16-2007, 05:25 PM
Some people run without foams but I don't like how the tire is always flat. I just cut the foams so it still looks good but performs better too. And I plan on making a video of my neighbors and my savage x's today and post it sometime tomorrow maybe today. Here's how i cut the foams.

Thanks..i actually just made a deal for a nice brushless mlst for the sw2 roller.
savage100
01-17-2007, 11:20 AM
So you got the brushless kit? Nice. That crawls dang good as it is. I keep asking my dad to take me to the hobby shop to get some parts but he won't take me. Hey James did you get the screws to mount the pede tranny with the SW2 kit? I never got them. Here's the list i still need to get:
1. 2 3/4 inch 6-32 allen head screws
2. 4 #6 flat washers
3. Steel diff output yokes
4. Aluminum tubing for the links does anyone know what size would work?
5. Jeep body
That is what i think i need left. I am gonna try and find the screws somewhere today.

savage100
01-24-2007, 05:52 PM
Ok I just locked the pede tranny. I first scrubbed all the parts in soapy water with an old tooth brush. Then i installed the 4 gears and the black one like the instructions say. Then i put in some of the JB Weld and mixed it around. First i mixed it by rotating the gears and then i used a skinny wooden tooth pick. The tooth pic worked really good. Then i put the other black gear in and added a little bit more JB Weld. Mixed it up again and then assembled the top and put the screws in. It went together more smoothley than i planned. Here's the pics.

I found out how to put the link brackets on. I used a dremel and ground some more down from what i had done before. I got the slipper clutch and drive yokes and the motor is at the post office. Ill get it on monday. And i also grinded down a little lip off the bottom of the axles so it doesn't get stuck on the rocks. I will be able to get most of it done by the weekend and i will finish it by next weekend. I don't know if ill have the body done by then but i should. You can see the difference of the lip on the axles. Here's the pics. And i will keep going on this thread.

savage100
01-27-2007, 09:47 PM
I am going to figure that out a little bit later. I can't position it until i have it almost put together. I have a question. I don't want to put the driveshafts onto the yokes because im afraid the yokes will break. Is there any special way to do this? They are traxxas plastic yokes with jato driveshafts. Once i figure this out then ill be able to start putting the chassis together and connecting the axles to it. Thanks for any help.
SS Pede
01-27-2007, 11:55 PM
You can probably just pop them on, might have to bend things a bit. But despite owning a Stampede (looks like a similar yoke setup) I have never had to attach the yokes to the shafts. Someone who has experience with Jato shafts should be able to help hopefully.
The real reason I replied is I have a question. Are you using the aluminum idler gear in the Pede transmission? In the pictures early in the thread it looks like you did not install this (optional) part. I don't own a crawler, so maybe this won't be an issue. But the aluminum idler gear definitely makes the Stampede transmission tougher. I guess you'll be going a lot slower and hitting fewer jumps than my Stampede, but I just wanted to mention this. Good luck with your project. :)
savage100
01-28-2007, 12:31 AM
Nope i am not running it. I was thinking about getting one when i ordered the drive yokes and slipper clutch but i forgot. I think i have a little chip in mine anyways. It spinns perfectly for about half way around the whole thing then it is tougher for the rest of the way. And i got a tip on rccrawler.com about soaking the drive yokes in hot water for about 30 seconds and trying it then. I should have them on tomorrow.
savage100
01-28-2007, 01:12 PM
Hey jamesbernatchez or anyone else i need your help. On your sw2 how did you get the axles into the drive yokes? I tried drilling it out a little bit more and still won't go in. Any quick responses are great because i want to get it all assembled besides the motor today. Thanks.
savage100
01-28-2007, 10:15 PM
I decided to go with the pede shafts since i already have some of the parts together. Hopefully i can order them tonight.
savage100
01-29-2007, 03:41 PM
I ordered the pede driveshafts and an extra set of yokes last night. They should be here on Wednesday. My motor is coming today also. It is a brand new hand wound integy one.
savage100
01-29-2007, 11:44 PM
Im so mad right now. Ok so i get my brand new motor, everything looks great. So i go to put the pinion on everything is working good. Then i start to put the pinion nut thing into the pinion to hold it onto the motor and i twist it maybe 3 times before it strippes. I looked at it for a while and tried another allen wrench and nothing. Completely stripped out. It is a robinson racing one too. I thought those were good quality to. I don't know what im going to do. At first i thought it was supposed to stick out a little bit so i try putting the motor in the tranny and sure enough the nut is supposed to be in more than that. It feels like everything always happens to me. Not just in rc either. I always get the worst of everything no matter what im doing. Ill try to make it work more but im not going to wait another week for me to get another one. I am right now willing to do anything to get this done by the weekend. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get it in or to fix a stripped head then any help is great. Thanks.
savage100
01-30-2007, 11:28 AM
I found out that it isn't stripped but it was in all the way. I took apart my tranny and found out that there are supposed to be some little teflan washers in it to space the metal pin out more. I never got those so ill have to order them unless i can find them at the hobby store. Looks like im going to be done in about 2 years if i don't get these soon so come back then. Really, im getting tired of ordering things and finding out problems. But this is my first kit so it'll take longer. I thought i had everything and then i need something else. Im going to be glad when i have a job and can actually make money. Anyway hopefully i can order them tomorrow and have them come before the weekend. If i get them by the weekend then i can get the tranny completely done with the motor in it. Then i can get all the rest of it done if i don't need anything else.

I just called the hobby store and said they have 3 packs of spacers in stock so im going there today. I also need some info on how the motor connects to the esc. In the pics above i think i need a wire to attach to each side on the motor. What wires are they? I know someone on here that is into electric has to know. Any quick help is great because i want to get them at the hobby store. Once i get these spacers and the wires then the other driveshafts will come tomorrow and i should have all the parts for sure this time. I might see if they have a steel idler gear there too since mine has a little chip in it. Thanks.
fasterthanspeed
01-30-2007, 11:13 PM
Take your motor, speed control, and battery pack, measure how long the esc is froom your motor, and your hobby shop should be able to wire it up. It would be best for you to have everything on the car,and have you hobby shop wire it up. This way itll have the correct length of wires. I would also recomend use deans conecctors on all connections.
savage100
01-30-2007, 11:18 PM
I went to the hobby store and got the teflon spacers and the deans wiring and plugs. I also got the aluminum idler gear. The tranny is a lot smoother now. I will probably be able to wire it but if i can't then ill take it to them. Thanks for the tip.

Ok thanks a lot. My driveshafts should be coming today. Then all i have to do is attach the links and then ill have a roller. I might be able to paint the jeep this weekene. And one good thing about this is my dad is getting interested in this. Now he doesn't complain about driving me to the hobby store.
jamesbernatchez
01-31-2007, 12:23 PM
Yeah, use pede driveshafts and metal yokes. Plastic yokes will usually just break when a tire is stuck. Wiring up is pretty simple. I can probably get a few pics tonight of how its done on my 2.2 rig.
savage100
01-31-2007, 04:18 PM
I actually got the plastic ones because im out of money. Then they will break and maybe my dad will buy me some metal ones. Who knows. Yeah i'd like a pic of the wiring a lot. I am waiting on my driveshafts to come. Hopefully ill actually want to walk out to the mailbox 3/4 of a mile away up and down a big hill and actually get them. Then come back. If not then ill get them at like 7:30. Ill probably go get them though. And ill try to be carefull and not get a tire stuck.
savage100
01-31-2007, 06:02 PM
And any idea how much less the motor will last if i run it in water? I don't want to ruin it.
Edit: The only thing holding me up right now is how to solder the wires to the motor and connect to the esc. If i get that done and get the driveshafts today ill be able to finish up the roller tomorrow if i don't get it done tonight and then just wire the esc and reciever. Jamesbernatchez i have a question too. How did you mount the battery on your SW2? Thanks a lot and i should have this done by the end of this weekend.
savage100
01-31-2007, 08:17 PM
I am still confused as to how these can connect. The ESC uses a different type of connecting as the deans plugs. Do i have to take the rubber thing off of the ESC and put the deans plugs on there? I haven't opened the wiring and plugs yet because I don't want to not be able to return them if they can't work. I am using a mtroniks ESC. Here are the pics:

I appreciate the trouble you've been going thru - I think thats the nature of assembling a rx crawler. Looks like quite an adventure just to get one put together.
About your questions - just from regular electrics, the tamiya conn that has red and black leads on your esc - thats the batt connection, that's the one that get the deans - a male. The batt is always the female to prevent shorts. The ones with the rubber grommets go to the motor and I solder those direct to the motor tabs.
Keep on, you're getting there little by little!

I don't even know right now if ill ever finish this by myself. I got the driveshafts on and got the whole front end on and guess what, driveshafts aren't long enough. I got tons of problems going on right now. The suspension is all weird, links are not moving very good, and other stuff. I will probably try and get someone else to do this since it has taken me almost a month or so to get not even half way.

02-01-2007, 03:32 PM
Ok thanks. I think something is wrong with my suspension or something. It is really stiff. It might just be the stock shocks. Also i might have to redo some of the driveshafts. I might have to make them extended by using a female with the end cut off so it is just a tube and then slide both males into each end.
Edit: i got the suspension working. I put the screws to the lower links in backwards so the nut was hitting the link and stopping it from moving very much. Now the only problem is the driveshafts.

I have a question. My driveshafts aren't quite long enough. They are but they are wobbly and are only in about 1/2 inch at the max. If i got female shafts on the tranny and axle side and used a male with the yoke part cut off would that make an extended driveshaft? Here is a little thing i made in like 5 mins. Thanks for the help.

Edit: Jamesbernatchez, do you have a body off shot of your SW2? I am trying to figure out how to mount the battery.

I used that way and it seems to be working. I am waiting for the glue to dry and then ill have all the front done. I am out of screws for now though. Ill have to pick some up at the hardware store.

I actually do have enough screws and will be getting the whole thing as a roller by tonight for sure. Then all that is left is to wire the electronics. I am still not sure how im going to mount the battery though. At least it is one of the last things you do. Hopefully i will be running it by mid next week, assuming i can get the wiring on the motor done in time.

Ok, I got it a roller. The shocks work a lot better than i thought they would. I am not sure how to mount the battery yet so ill wait on the electronics for now. If anyone knows a good way to mount the battery then could you tell me. The wheelbase it 12.75 inches also. Here is the pictures:

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p176/Savage_100/IMG_0518.jpg
And here is the driveshaft layout that i did. I glued the right part together and left the left side unglued for the slider. I also cut about 1/4 inch off of each female shaft so make sure they would not hit eachother. The male shaft is in the right female end about 3/4 inch and in the left acout 3/4 inch.

I got the battery in place and am trying to find a balloon to put the reciever in. The esc is mounted and most of the wiring is done, except the motor. I hope to get it done tomorrow and maybe have the whole thing but the body done tomorrow.

I have a problem. I wired the electronics and the steering works. The motor won't go though, i have used two different motors too. But when i turn the power switch on the truck off, the motor gets slight power, enough to turn the pinion about 1/5 of a turn. I think it is that the esc is not programmed. Do you HAVE to program it or can you program it if you want. I tried and can't get it to work. The directions say to turn everything on and the red and green light will flash for 2 seconds, in that time push and hold the set button. But when i turn the stuff on, no lights flash. I am so confused now. I have tried diff. batteries, switching the plug that goes into the reciever, tried two motors, nothing is getting it to work. The ESC is a M.troniks Viper RV15 and the reciever is a traxxas 3 channel one with the TQ3 controller. Any quick help is great. Thanks.

Ok i got it done. The layout is temporary untill my dad has more time to get the plugs done. I took a short video of it in my room. I will take somemore video of it out on the rocks with out a body tomorrow, unless i can fit a different body to it. Here is the video.

It is the little nut that holds the pinion on. It is just barely hitting the inside of the spur gear. It should wear out in a couple battery packs. I plan on making one of it out in the rocks today.

It isn't done yet. I just got throught cleaning it and am waiting for my mom to go get some masking tape from their work. I will have it done by about 2:00 for sure. Then ill make the movie.

My extended driveshaft popped out, the middle male shaft came unglued and fell out. I used lots of glue this time and it should hold up. I just have to take the shocks off and stick it back in. Depending on how long it takes to dry i might not have a video of it today. But i was driving it around the backyard and where ill be taking a video of it and it climbs great. I cant wait till i put the body on it.

I painted the body but im still waiting for it to dry all the way. It looks pretty awesome, just like the real one i showed. It looks more like it when we have our bikini top on though. I am going to cut it out and put decals on hopefully tonight if it dries in time. If not ill do it tomorrow and have it running tomorrow afternoon and then take a video of it out in the dirt. Im not sure if i have long enough body posts though.

Thanks. I finished the body but im not sure how to mount it, the posts aren't long enough. I know you can mount them on the side so they stick out the sides of the body but these posts won't work like that. i'll probably have to get longer ones.

Ok, got another couple videos of it out in the rocks today. The second one isn't working so ill just post this one for now. Still no body but i should be able to go to the hobby store soon. Sorry about the clicking noise again but im going to shim the motor out a little bit so it stopps. Here is the video.

Thanks, i am going to get a couple body posts either today or tomorrow and i will make a full movie. My neighbor is getting one and we are making our own little rubicon trail. It is too long to film all the way but we'll do the best we can to get all the hardest parts. It crosses all the way on both of our propreties. It is a big long uphill stream with lots of rocks and water holes.

I know you wanted to make it as realistic as possible and you have done very well, but watching your video's I can't help feeling that if you added spacers to the wheels to widen your track, it'd make it more stable.
As I am in the process of building a Crawler I have followed you build closely and am very impressed, I do not have much experience and don't even know if it is possible to widen the track of your SW2.
savage100
02-14-2007, 05:18 PM
It is actually. I don't do it since i didn't have the money and don't like the wide look of it but you can get some G-made wheel wideners from http://www.thecrawlerstore.com/tires_wheels.html. I think that is what people using tlt's use most. Thanks for the compliment by the way.
