Go with any of the mamba systems, and the castlelink. that way you can program it for whatever you want

That was way I started, I got the Mamba 5400kv version, called the performance pack. That was a good place to start, plenty fast and controllable at the same time. It doesn't run hot either like some of the higher kv motors do.
The link is a must have, it makes setting and updating the software on the mamba esc very easy.

yeah, the mamba systems are hard to beat. Just go for one of the lower kv systems, since you're just starting out. The mamba systems can be had for around $100, if you look around.

Any Mamba package will be a good choice :) IIRC the Competition package is the 6800kv version, which is what I'd go with personally. I used to run a Comp X in my Mini-T, it got me hooked on brushless :D
Its essential you pick up fairly decent quality batteries though or you'll have poor performance, and cogging (stuttering at slow speed) issues. GP1100's and upwards with Deans Ultra's on do the job nicely.

I am new to brushless also, aside from no brushes whats the diff? Can you program the Esc? Up keep diff? I am a old school R/C guy from before the stealth trans in RC10's you know. So if you can give a sorta newbie some advice that would be great!! I want a RC18T we'll see.

I clocked my rc18t with a mamba 8000kv motor and 3 cell lipo at 50 mph with stock gears
