I got a cheap roller TT-01 from a friend so I decided to make it into a drifter. I have a HPI Sprint that I currently drift, so I figured I'd have another. Car needs some work, but I'm up for a little project. I need a new ESC, motor, battery and servo to get it up and running. Later on I'll add oil filled shocks, a few carbon fiber parts and some other stuff. Then I need to find a body to top it off! Here's what I got now:

Going to my LHS in the morning to get my electronics and possibly some other parts.

Nice score Serp. I tell ya, for a drifter, the TT is awesome!!!

Dotn forget to fill the rear diff to lock it up!

Fill the rear diff with what? How do I lock it and what does locking it do? I have a Sprint drifter and I didnt touch the diff and it drifts real nice.

well, "locking" the diff keeps the diff from un-loading, or doing the one wheel peel. I filled mine with play-doh, but hot glue will work as well. If your sprint uses a ball diff, that could be the reason, but overall, you wil lfind a sweeter drift angle can be had if you can keep the back end stepped out further.....hence the "locking".

got any pics of how I can lock it? so by locking it, the gears in the diff dont spin?

zman, do i suggest I get a new Tamiya servo.esc combo. I forget what they call it. Or should I get an ESC and servo seperatly?

no not the play dough. the pics right below where it says "3 gear diffs, pretty straight forward, and bullet proof.." 3rd pic in post 28, 3 gears mounted on another metal piece. Two pics above the play-doh pic.

im not very good with electric rc's. i notice you have a traxxas TQ3 receiver on your car. How do you have that setup? Do you have a ESC also?

z-man280
01-16-2007, 12:28 AM
actually, i used the supplied Tamiya kit esc. Using a TQ3 was strictly for added features, such as the remote lights. for drifting, about any ESC will work. Reason? You dont need a fast motor to drift. A 19 turn motor will be more than enough, especially if you put the car on "drift" tires.

The Tazer 15 by Dynamite is a very straight forward ESC, set up is very easy, and fits well in the TT chassis. If you are looking for a good radio at a low price, check your LHS for a simple radio and servo, or even one with an ESC and servo combo. The futaba magnum sport with ESC and one servo can be had for about 75 dollars i believe. That would be an excellent set up for your needs. Pick up a 19turn motor, or a stock motor even, put on your drift tires, and start sliding!!!

Ok, sounds good. I have a 15T in my Sprint drifter right now and it works good. I'll see what my LHS has and i'll go from there. Do you have a site where i can find tt-01 hop ups. Tower has a few, Id like to find more.

Goodnight for now, update tomorrow!

Dropped in a Venom 15T and a Futaba S3305 metal gear servo. Going back to my shop tomorrow for other various parts and hopefully getting an ESC. I hope to have it up and running by the beginning of next week. Pics will come tomorrow morning!

Just got back from the shop, I picked up a few more things for the car. I got a Novak XRS esc, venom battery, drive pins and hexes. I hooked it all up and it works. Now I just need a set of shocks and it'll be driveable. I want to get it up and driving, then I'll add some aluminum and carbon fiber parts. I drove it for like a minute and it spins out a lot. Will locking the rear diff make it drift nicer? Pics tonight!

z-man280
01-18-2007, 12:24 PM
well,...

here's he deal.when the car spins out...it comes to a stop for a second. Thats the diff's un-loading...or, the same as lifting one side up. The wheelspin overcomes motion, and it "stalls" for a second.
Locking the rear diff keeps that moments moving, thus not alowing the diff to un-load. when you spin out, it will continue going around, as both wheels will "pull" thru the corner.
once you lock the diff up, you will notice this immediately,..now the trick? keeping the back of the car "stepped out"...while steering with slight, or small steering input. Between throttle control, and steering, you will be drifting like a pro in no time.

Sounds good, I'll take my diff out tonight and put in some play-doh. Fill the diff case all the way with play-doh?

well, more or less. you want the cover to go back on. It wont take much to lock it

I ordered the rest of my parts today. I got a foam bumper, bumper mount, alum drive shaft, and alum shocks. I stopped at my LHS and picked up an HPI RX-7 body and some yellow paint for it. While I was there, I picked up another Novak XRS ESC for my other drifter. When the rest of the parts get here, i'll post up some pics. In the meantime, I have to find some play-doh and lock that rear diff!

Good snag, man! Now, be sure and keep us updated on your progress. I have just acquired a TC3 which will be my drift project, and I know that hellbilly is also doing a TT01 drifter. Heck, after the inspiration Zman fgave us, how could we NOT?!

Yea, z-man is def an inspiration. I have 1 drifter already, its an HPI Sprint chassis. I just finished the RX-7 body for the TT-01. Let me go snap some pics and i'll post them soon!

Snazzy makeover SerpentCTS4, great job. Have fun drifting.
Do race anywhere in Queens?

SerpentCT4S
01-26-2007, 10:31 AM
Dont really race 1/10 cars. More into trucks. During the spring I bash at Cunningham park with a bunch of guys. They set up a track and we bash every saturday and sunday.
Heres a link:

Square RC makes a nice spool for the tt01, like $18 from Champ RC in japan, some people have good luck with the silly putty or playdo but I prefer the idea of being locked.
STD-50H is the part number, they have a drift pack with springs also.

its probably not completely locked. my rs4 used to do the same thing when i thought i had locked it. just go back and make sure you pack the diff completely.

wow.... looks really nice, what tires are you using for drift

SerpentCT4S

Ok, I'll take it out and pack it nice and tight.

Thanks balang, I'm using Yokomo drift tires.

Ok, i re-did the diff. All 4 wheels spin now but now I have another problem. It drifts if I turn right, but doesnt drift if I turn left. It will turn like a normal car to the left. Any ideas?

XXWoodmanXX

Check the camber on the tires. Ensure that the plastic surface area of the tire is making contact with the road surfance, and not the rubber 'lips' on the Yokomo drift set. :)

Hey, I figured out what the problem was. When I took the diff apart, I forgot to put back in the last gear over the play-doh. Not sure the name of the gear, but its where the dogbones attach. Anyway, its up and running and did it's first few drifts before. Thanks guys!!

cool. Glad you were able to troubleshoot and fix yourself.
