has anyone ever ventured off far beyond novak velocity fdr starting points? for my onroad touring, novak suggested 10.5 to 11.5 for the 3.5r. i've gone to as low as 8.7, but have testing and tuning between 9.7 and 10.5. the system seems to be handling it rather well and nothing gets hot. am i overlooking something here?

Numbers that manufacturers give are A) on the safe side (so they don't have to service A TON of products), and B) are merely "suggestions" in that if you run a TC with the 3.5R in Arizona during the summer vs. somewhere else where the outside air temp is 30, 40, 50, etc. degrees cooler, running in Arizona will mean you're more "confined" in your gearing choices while not overheating the motor.
Equiptment being used plays a factor too; how free your drivetrain is, bearings, wheels/tires combos, how heavy the vehicle is, etc.
Too many variables to consider! So I'd say it's fine to go outside the "norm", but you still need to monitor things.:)

Use the temperature of the motor as your "gearing Guide". We go for "final" temps at the end of the run on the motor of 160-175F. I hate gearing recomendations because as soon as everyone reads them, that's it, they stop reading. There's a sentence before and after the gearing recomendations that states the temps stuff. Also, there's now a label inside the newest boxes..... :)
