I am planning on going brushless with a Mamba Max 5700 Combo kit on my Traxxas Rustler.
I am hearing that I will need to change my gearing.
Can someone explain to me exactly what I will need to do to make the switch to brushless as smooth and risk free as possible.
Do I need a bigger/smaller pinion or other gear?

I hardly know anything about brushless motors, but with the extra power, i would suggest you have to gear down...
You can do this by fitting a smaller pinion gear, or a larger spur gear...or both!

I run 20/87 in my Rustler with IB4200s. The system (both motor and ESC; the ESC doesn't break 110 degrees F with a fan during the day time, and the motor hovers around 150 degrees F) handles it fine. I'm also running road rages which are about 3.5" in diameter. If you plan on using larger tires, you'll need to go down on the pinion a bit (maybe 3-4 teeth for something like Masher 2000s or Moabs and a 90 tooth spur gear).
I suggest you get an aluminum idler gear as well before you run the 5700 in the Rusty. And 5x11 bearings at all 4 corners.
