i want to create a gallery of overkill machines... Brushless, very few turn, lipo, 12 cell nimh???... you tell me... just want to see some pictures of ride that will make me feel less crazy... here are my rides...
over kill doesn't need to mean expensive or fast (it may) but really any idea that was just taken too far.... 1/4 scale servo.... gyro steering.... twin gas... custome chassis... just looking for some cool pics of stuff that isn't stock....

I have a serious question... how can any 18th scale drivetrain hold up to something like a MM 5700???
Same ? regarding the rest of the vehicle... doesn't it pretty much get destroyed???
elmo_cecil
01-28-2007, 10:46 PM
lots of upgrades... alloys gears, steel diffs, steel cvd's.. custom cut 3/16" CF chassis, titanium reinforcement plates (mcmaster-carr)... and wheel slip... wrecks are bad though..also try to minimize friction asnd reistance and align everything.. plus wheel bearing grease in diff cases... andlowest motor timing so far... and ratio is 26/60 so torque is limited... i actually find the dual mamba a little harder on drivetrain as gearing and tires apply more shock to drivetrain and wheel slip is limited... with wheelie bar

Interesting setups forsure. My most insane vehicle is a 10th scale Losi Jrxs with 3S LiPo and a Mamba Max 5700. My RC18T has a Mamba 8000 and 2S LiPo, its already as fast as I need it to be. My M18 has a Mamba 8000 and 2S LiPo for fast tracks and a Mamba 4200 for tighter tracks. Mini Inferno has a Wraith 7000 with 3S LiPo. I absolutely love fast cars but I also want to be able to control and race them.
I think you may have more fun putting some serious horsepower in a 10th scale car so it can take the power and still perform well. I could be wrong though, nothing wrong with some insanity in a very small package!

I don't have any really insane stuff... mine is all rather practical race-oriented :)
My 1/8 buggy will do almost 60mph with the right motor/gearing combo but normally I have it setup for 35-40 tops for racing.
But I do have some ideas in mind so I can say I have an insane r/c.... something 1/10 scale with 1/8 BL power is all I can say for now. We'll see what happens if I get some time.

Hi,nice truck. And a q?.Where did you get those nice red battery straps?
i got some just like that at walmart. they are for bundling cords. can be found in electrical section as well as some other places in most walmarts.
I have a bandit rustler conversion, using a MM 7700 and an orion 4800 LiPo.
I had to build a wheely bar, and make new mounts for the body; the body and the body mounts were destroyed by the brushless power. I had to replace the rear shocks with aluminum, the axles and drive shafts with MIP CVDs, the plastic idler with aluminum, the plastic spur with aluminum, the plastic differential with aluminum/steel, all the hub carriers with RPM pieces with 5x11 bearing, all the A-arms with RPM parts, and the caster links with RPM parts. Even the servo had to be upgraded to a metal gear part, as well as the steering links all the way through had to be replace with stronger parts.
I have picts on photobucket but they dont work here...

I got them from the Home Depot. The are for wraping up electrical cords like
one85_db posted. I made the battery strap from a piece of Lexan, also from the Home Depot. The 3s2p lipo is about 1.5cm thicker than a normal NIMH pack. This setup seems to be hold the pack very well.

Let's try again: xb8, 9xl, 125b, 2 x 3s1p A123 li-ion cells, stock gearing, and a theres rubber mounts for the esc to isolate vibrations. It's dirty and it's a wiring nightmare but I just wanted to see what it'll do. Just like everything else, it's an ongoing project. Also, note where my antenna is ( 3pks with 2.4 fasst ) with no problems at all.

Is that pinion something you got from Finedesignrc or did you make it yourself?
If you made it yourself, I would be interested in how because I need one too.

I made an aluminum arbor inside of the clutchbell with 2 screws on the front and two 1/4-28 set screws on the o.d. It's not pretty, but it's functional and wont' come off. I wanted to keep the stock brakes and there wasn't enough clearance with the pinion I bought, so I just used a 13t clutchbell that I had laying around.
PM me if you need something made.

I might have asked this before but about the dual motors on a common spur gear.I was told at one time that they have to be set up very carefully because the two seperate esc's would have a hard time synching the two motors timing precisely.Something about the esc telling a motor one thing and the spur driven by the other motor forcing it to do another.Maybe things have changed since then but did you take any special steps during set up or encounter any obvious problems when you ran it ??
Thanks for your time

01-30-2007, 07:03 PM
wow... brushless semi.. that rocks...
twin motors... hmmm... setup.... well i matched the systems 16/60 gearing, 8000rpm/volt mamba with matching ESCs and 1320 3Clipo's.. i set up the throttle curves... i made sure they were aligned and there is not drivetrain resistance... i spoke to a couple people (none from CC) and we all are under the impression electric motors produce a constant torque when electricity is applied the idea being no matter what rpm they are running they will aplly an ammount of torque... so splitting the load between two motors should effectivly double the torque and not be detrimental to the motors... the first time i set it up i actuallyused a 6800 on a 3C and a 8000 on a 2C and it didn't run hot at all... i decided to match things up to make sure here would be no problems... it did seems to chew up spur gears quickly (even AL spurgears)...
video... as soon as time permits my digital camera sux for video (does quicktime videos that are hard for me to modify plus the wife is kinda not in the mood to watch me play with my expensive toys) a guy from work is kinda interested and helps me make videos but right now is not good for us to shoot videos at work (big wigs in from europe and we have to look busy) so maybe once they leave and weather gets a bit warmer plus everytime we shoot a video i wreck bad... always trying to show off...
side note... i am always hearing about people melting or stripping diff gears in rc18ts with BL motor or any high power motors... i have had no such problems since switching to AL gear boxes with shimmed super diffs... (in fact i am running the same diffs in the maxx that orignally ran in the first twin motor set-up and have never rebuilt) anybody else running crazy rc18s with no diff problems?...
anyway thanks for posting and hope to see some more rides....
one last thing.. what is up with the abc123 li-ion batteries... they are not explosive? do they have similar capacities?... i saw the one ride with two pack and thought cool.. plus with such small car and six lipo cells wrecks and the fear of explosions really worry me...

Here is a couple of mine my brushless crt I'm working on and my 80mph 18B notice the 2 broken pinion shafts on the Wraith motors :( 14.8 volts is to much for the Wraith's I found out to bad if they held together I think 90mph plus would be posible. :D

^ wow thats some serious torque-age there lol. Especially when you start breaking an twisting motor shafts. Makes you wonder how on earth the magnet can be attached to the shaft good enough to handle that much torque, even more so imagine the strength of the electromagnetic field inside that motor can :wow:

Earl- Is that a 2s2p lipo? I see it fits under your stock battery retainer. How tight is the fit? I am thinking of getting the 2s2p 6000 or 8000 pack next month. Thanks
I had a Novak 5.5R in mine for a couple of months. It was more power than I could use in the dirt but not as fast as I wanted when running in the street. So I switched to the Mamba 5700 I only use the 3s lipo when playing in the street or a large parking lot. I am guessing it runs about 50-55mph. Earl, I have the same setup right now(with the 5.5). I have a 4.5 also and a let me just say that the 4.5 is way faster than the 5.5. The 4.5 will pop it up on two wheels with a 21 pinion but is just too hard on the tranny, thats why I have the 5.5 in there now.
I just got back from the LHS since I slamed it into my mailbox and busted the front kick plate and a shock when the lipo low volt cutoff kicked in.
And Boystoys, the 6000mah lipo fits in there just fine ;)

The MaxAmps 2 cell lipo fits near perfect in the XXX-T. I flipped the battery strap over. I also notched out a divot in the battery wall so there wouldn't be any stress on the negative wire coming out of the battery. Easy job with a cordless dremel.

I was thinking about getting the 3.5 myself. The 5.5 was the fastest they had when I bought the motor system last year. I only run a 16T pinion and it is retarded fast already. Can't imagine a 3.5R motor on a 20T pinion. I might find out though. ;)

There is a cogging issue I had to push it to get going I here Castle is comming out with a update soon I still need to see if I can reprogram the ESC and see if that helps?

here is a question for you guys.... i am looking for a basher... i want 4wd, decent ground clearance, supply of hop-up parts and ability to handle 2S lipo with 7700 mamba max... i am going up to alaska for a vacation and wanna some bashing/rock climbing... i was thinking a rustler but it seems traxxas isn't a good choice... was considering an e-max but it is kinda pricey and has that dual motor set-up... any recommendations?
With the Mamba max 7700 motor keep it small and light a Associated rc10t4 or b4 buggy or mid motor rc10gt? You can get Associated parts just about anywhere even Alaska LOL

Sell the engine, pipe, and tank on Fleabay, make it brushless and add lipo. Where to mount the battery and how to make the motor mount are the biggest questions I would have.

Its currently powered by a mamba 4600 on 4s lipo. The FLM trans case is flipped around backwards to give it about an inch extra wheelbase, and to move some weight forward. Combined with the jato suspension with backwards mounted front arms, its about 2 inches longer than a stock rustler, with the stock chassis. That is a proline desert rat made for maxx trucks.

elmo have you used those rally tires before? If so how do they hold up? I've got a tc3 shortened and lifted to convert it into a 1/16th scale offroad and I keep destroying tires...
At the moment I'm using mini quake split-block tires but on grass they last about 4 packs before they become slicks. I'm only using a novak ss5800 on 6 cells at the moment but I've got some a123 3s li-ion packs coming (when they arrive I'll put the car on here; I think it qualifies). With the li-ions I think tire life will only get worse.

My TC4 has not had a drivetrain problem with the exception of one broken diff screw. But, that was not horsepower related, merely a bad screw. :)
I htink most super high horsepower cars rely on wheel spin to save the drive train. I have seen 84MPH in 2 seconds with my TC4 without breaking anything.
I am currently building an RC10L4 with a "Big Block" Neu 1512/2Y on 12S TP Extremes (4HP at 4 pounds). I will post pics of that car as I get it together.

elmo_cecil, how did you figure that you'll get 910watts out of a 2s A123 pack? At 100amps each cell will be at about 2v. I could see each cell putting out a maximum of about 250watts, for 500watts in a 2s setup. Although that will still be too much for an 1/18 .

here some real-world-data, 4s1p A123 in my Heli,
batts were charged with 8A and had time to rest for 30min

so i would say, the 500Watt tcolesen mentioned for 2s are more on the right side

Reinhard,
There is a different feel with the gyro than without. Actually, a heading hold gyro increases steering sensitivity. But, it also increases steering control. It is almost like supercharging the steering. I have a 64 MPH Tamiya Dark Impact with a GY 501 in it. That car has very sloppy steering, but runs fantastic in HH mode. I would highly recommend running a gyro in an off road car. In fact, I think it works better in an off road car than a road car.

I run an Eagle Tree on board data logger ($69) that gives actual amp draw, voltage, and the related watt reading in real time (10 samples a second). You can download the info via USB to analize the data. Once the actual wattage reading is obtained, you have to take motor efficiency into account.
Here is some specific data from my TC4;
Total wattage drawn 2212 watts. Motor efficiency at that load would be roughly 75%. So, my total motor output on that particular run is 1659 watts. Then the output wattage gets devided by 746 to arrive at the horsepower output. In this particular case, my horsepower peaked at 2.22HP.

WOW gota love that for 70 bucks it's well worth it and it will do RPM and temps. :D I saw the larger version awhile back and the size was the only thing I didn't like but this version is what I was looking for. :)
Elmo you are right about flying with Lipo's and if the TSA see's them they will not be allowed on the plane. Put one in your checked bags and chances are you will get pulled in for a bag inspection and probably miss your flight when it goes through the XRAY it looks like a bomb in your baggage if you leave the packs in the chassis. This happend to a friend of mine he got stuck in the airport for about 12 hours before he could get another flight. :(
A123 cells? I have not seen to much info on these cells but from my understanding they are safer and in your case with a 10th scale motor in a 1/18th scale car and the weight and load difference the amp draw should be much lower then running it in a larger car? Anyway the car is looking nice with the wide track kit and I'm curious to see how the aluminum diff gears hold up to the max motor? :driving:

yeah I'm not that big a fan of these batteries either... both due to the companies practices like why are the cells so expensive in the rc packs but much cheaper in the dewalt? cordless drill packs?
and these cells don't have the energy density of Lipo's, and they are also a funny size and a funny voltage..
they do have some good parts to be sure, like the high charge rates possible and their supposed safety, but they aren't for everybody...
still I'm using them because they happen to fit perfectly (I hope, I haven't received the cells yet) in my 16th scale and running 3s with a novak ss sounds good... going over the specs enough so I feel like I'm pushing it to its limits, and hopefully not enough to blow anything up (or more likely melt something)

I have looked into it. I made a liquid cooled amplifier for my car audio system 8 years ago. So, I am familiar with small pumps, radiators, etc. The issue is parts size and weight. On a 1/8 scale care, it is doable. On a 1/10 scale care, it would be tight. In your appication I think it would not work. But, that is my opinion. I think it would be cool to do. I just think the parts size is prohibitive for such a small scale car.

"c" hubs
knuckle bearing carriers
gyro
1/10 touring shocks...
just looked at my pinion and found out i was wrong gearing is only 30/56... gotta stech uppe motor mount slot and notch chassis for 35T pinion... thinking about doing that... on the gearing note i found a "600" can size brushless air motor that is rated for 5000 rpm/volt and capable of 6S lipo... way to expensive for me now and not sure how to mount a pinion to that thing but it is cool to dream... but wouldn't it be cool to run a motor that big... oph yeah cut another flat chassis with integral bumpers

Not quite as modified as some of the others in this thread.
RC 10 T3 with Mamba Max direct to a @s lipo via banana plugs, a 7700 KV motor, GRP wheels, MIP CVDs, stiffer springs and shocks, hardened spur gear
I have a dog bone on one side because the pin spun out and jammed on the A-arm and split the CVD. New one on order.
The GRP's are slightly slippery and I don't flip as much but can still get top speed out of the motor.
Hardened spur gear because I melted the other one.
Sorry a couldn't take a smmaller enough pic to upload

well heres my mini tc3 I said I'd post. Using 3s a123 li-ion and a Novak ss... I think its fast enough, although a mamba max 5700 is tempting.
It uses a tc3 chassis which I cut in half and took 80mm out of, which makes it about 1/16th scale (the body I'm using is a Trinity NEXT body which I think is 1/16th). I've been waiting months for this superglued chassis to snap in half so I have an excuse to make one out of carbon fiber. Hopefully the new battery should accomplish that... With any luck I'll melt the esc so I have an excuse to get a Mamba as well.

Tower's current price on the part number 34970 (what Nitro-House sells for $299) is $275. Tower always lists items at the suggested retail price until they get close to getting them in. Plus, if you order now there is a $30 additional discount code that can be appied to this, making it $245 from Tower.

really like the motor plate... just taking a closer look.. you are using all four screws... godd qualiy design.. plus to looks like you got slots widfe enough to do ANY gearing... whats the maximim pull you can get from that pack.... you might be able to do some insane speed runs if you gear that thing like 1:1 pinion to spur... the biggest pinion i found was 35T but i think you might be able to bolt this to a 35T pinion to make 55T pinion... that would get you INSANE speeds... http://cgi.ebay.com/TEAM-ASSOCIATED-RC18T-BLUE-TITANIUM-MAIN-GEAR-55T_W0QQitemZ320016775710QQihZ011QQcategoryZ44029Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem anyway great lookin ride... like the idea of modding gas powered cars too they seem tougher from the start..

Thanks I was going to lower this car and make a high speed onroad car like my 18B but after getting it I decided I want to play around at the track with it and see how competitive it will be with the gas cars on dirt. Elmo you are right gas cars make the best brushless conversions because they have stronger chassis and drivetrains to start.
The Maxamps 3s 4000mah pack is rated at 80amps constant 120amps sustained and will burst at 200amps so power is no problem.:)

Not much to say really... I just got back from my easter break at my parents shack and was tearing along dirtbike tracks and gravel roads with it. We also had one road that was paved 2 weeks ago but still has lots of loose rocks on the sides. I did some speed tests along there and I got showered by small rocks a few times when I went strayed too far from the center of the road... need some goggles :) . I don't know how fast it goes... fast enough thats its difficult to keep straight long enough to hit top speed (ballooning tires make it a tad unstable).
my camera is real old so it can't take videos unfortunately.
My biggest issue at the moment is keeping the tires glued on their rims. They are miniquake tires on HPI vintage rims and seem to fit well, but still come unglued. (didn't have that problem on 7.2v nimh) I need to buy a decent radio, and do something with the steering because the tc3 steering doesn't handle the dust and rocks real well but other than that its working really well. The superglued chassis held up even doing some decent sized jumps and crashing once into a tree at about 30mph (only broke a suspension arm :) ). The motor and esc do get insanely hot but it has survived probably the 15 or so packs I've run through it with these batteries.
So it was tonnes of fun over the weekend, and even held up to the driving of my 6, 4, and 2 year old nephews.

To be honest the 18R is not all that great of a car you would be better off getting a 18B or 18T and lowering it with some foams for onroad fun. The handling with the narower 18R suspension is not as good as the wider 18T or 18B on road. For some stupid reason Associated cant get parts for the 18R out there I have been waiting 3mo for some dogbones I snapped running a 4s lipo. Just my 2 cents on the 18R

D box is a drift box. It is basically a relabeled (and over priced) heli gyro. A gyro is a component originally designed to stabilize heli tails. However, a few eyars back a number of us heli guys started running them for our car steering. It helps the steering control of the car tremendously!
The best gyro for the money would be the JR410 or (if you have a third chanel) a Futaba gy240.
