Best Paint Competition – February 2007

Please read this carefully and in its entirety!! There are a few changes for the new year.

The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the month of February and will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, February 28, 2007.

Restrictions: Concourse competition All bodies should be painted (or should I say modeled) to appear as a real life car. The more realism the better. This includes not only paint, but added features like tail pipes, rear view mirrors, seating, dash boards, etc.
(See accompanying thread for this years schedule.)

The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.

RULES for Best Paint competitions:

1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.

Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered

Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.

Classes of entry (Now three classes. Think of it as creating a higher class then Pro. Intermediate is the old Pro.)

Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class and people who have previously won 2 Pro classes are required to be in this level. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.

Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.

Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.

Judging
Each of the following areas will be judged with a maximum of 10 points. After the points are tallied, the highest score wins.

1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.

2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.

3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.

The photo and background will not be judged but a clean, well-lit photo that clearly shows the body is needed. Too often, muddy or poorly lit pictures limit the car’s chances of winning and lower its score. Keep in mind that a better picture will attract more attention.

Remarks from the judges are highly encouraged. Remarks help the individual painters see their shortcomings and help them overcome them. Judges of the Pro and Intermediate classes are highly encouraged to be very critical in their judging. However, tact and an objective viewpoint are paramount when judging. Malicious or spiteful remarks will not be tolerated.

Rules for the Judge - You will have to judge within 5 days of the end of the contest. If you are unable to do so, please contact mab_man20 via PM within 24 hours of the end of the contest.

If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.

Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.

ADRCRACING will judge this month’s Pro Class. The intermediate class will be judged by Mel*E*Mel. Finally, the amateur class will be judged by JeffEmbracedDC..

Winners of this contest will judge the next contest. If you have no intention of judging the next contest, do not enter this competition. .

Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

I know its already the the 9th of the month, but I like to have all the judging in before the new one starts, and the last few days have been busy. If you really want me to start it on the first of the month please post in the General paint competition thread (http://forums.radiocontrolzone.com/showthread.php?p=2185090#post2185090) and if a decent number of people request it ill do it.

Awesome, one crazy suggestion though... paint the outside black trims on the outside and let the paint stipple. Makes it look like the grainy black plastic on real cars.

Hey Ron- I showed my Dad the pics of your rides, and he asked me with a twisted face "Those are RC cars?!" Of course I said yes, and he then went on to say that the 2Fast2Furious Skyline reference picture was the one that looked like a toy. He also said that that the photography work was superb, and the backdrops you have really launch those cars into another realm of awesomeness.

Good luck in the competition!

Nice work calvin, You would think that driver would be smiling :). Nice 57 HG did you use silver paint for the chrome? It doesn't seem to POP like it does on the Bug.

Ron you forgot TWO major things on slidewayz bud. Bugs on the windshield and a Police car parked behind it.If concourse is judged on authentic looking i would say you have it nailed hands down.

These competitions are very inspiring I have been wanting to try it and i cant even paint a WALL.

balang 479: i customed the tl01 chassis just for the mini
bodyshells and i wanted a 4 wheel drive based kit.

lidz: the nos bottle i used came from the tamiya wild willy
kit.

jayboy: the chassis was measured first to know exactly
how much to trim away from the chassis and the
portion removed was between the battery and motor.
i just epoxied them back together and have used it
several times without failure.

regarding the class category, since i do all my work
just for personal use only, upon reading your guidelines,
i felt i'm in the intermediate class. but its all up to
if you want me moved to pro.thanks

I believe there needs to be a new standard established for the classes. Its getting WAY out of hand (just free reign for anyone to enter ANY class regardless of their skill or not)

We are in the second month of the new classes. We need to be a little patient until we can filter everyone into the correct classes. I strongly disagree that things are "way out of hand" and I am curious what your specific cases are (please PM me and we can talk about it)

If anyone objects to the class a body is entered in, please contact me PRIVATELY and I will look into it and determine where I feel they should be.

I have changed HGcolors to the Pro class, but am giving him a chance to argue against this change if he feels it is unfair.

I have been drooling over all the entrees this month. Lets not have this get in the way of having a good time and enjoying everyone's display of skill.

well said Mab,.....

everything new usually requires "tweeks" before it runs smooth. Us in the r/c world know that all too true, so we should understand completely where you are coming from Mab.

HG, where or what program are you using for those decals?????

wow, those really look incredible.

No its because this month is CONCOURSE. So I'm guessing Mab is giving him the chance to withdraw that body from the competition, before he gets graded poorly for not being a realistically-aimed body, and before that body becomes ineligible for future paint competitions[once you enter a body, you cannot enter it again].

So, unfortunately Tommckay, even though that body looks stellar, it just doesn't fit this month's guidelines.

Gen G.. Hummer
Design.7 The Added little graphic in the paint really sets it off!!
Execution.9 Looks really good,Handles and lights painted in gives it that extra touch!!
Difficulty.8 the extra touchs had to be alot of time involved Sweet Job!!
total...24 even tho i think it's a winner . seems no one else does.. so there ya go

Z-man SkyLine
Design.9 Not alot of design here but looks great!! Looks just like the model (real car)
Execution...8 The added lights look great
Difficulty...8 again adding the lights had to be a pain!
total..25

Z-man Bug
Design...6 Love bugs!!
Execution...9 scaled sweet!!
Difficulty...7 still love BUGS!!
total...22

HGcolors 57
Design.8 Looks Ol' School!! Nice!
Execution.7 if the flames were pinned it would have looked killer!!but still Nice

Ok i looked at the rules here is the main part

Restrictions: Concourse competition All bodies should be painted (or should I say modeled) to appear as a real life car. The more realism the better. This includes not only paint, but added features like tail pipes, rear view mirrors, seating, dash boards, etc.

Now I agree the painting detail in the tears on the hummer look neat they Dont appear to be real. I am not trying to put the hummer down but its NOT in the same category as the Skyline an Bug.

The 57 has some awesome detail and looks sweet but i wouldn't expect to see it in town.

Very disappointed in the judging. Sad to say im sure the paint competitions are on the way out. I really enjoyed them alot.

well to be honest .. the sky line doesn't look all that great to me ..yeah the lights add to it but to me it's a paint comp not a sticker comp...like the stickers for handles
it looks like the model but it just doesn't do it for me ..
I look for paint .. sorry to say .. the sky line is two colors..and you can see cut lines on top of it all
the hummer has two main colors and ALOT of detail work..maybe it's just me but hey .. I did what i felt was fair to judge a Paint comp...
but don't get me wrong the bug looks good too.. but it's a kit .. one color I still I like it alot but it's just one color no detail to it but add the bumpers
the hummer has everything painted ..handles.. wipers.. hummer logo on the grille..lights with detail in the lights not just painted red..to me that set it off and the small details in the paint like the rips can be done to a real hummer with no problem not too crazy but just enough to make it look like a company truck

Well, I Sorta think how it was judged was beat also, I mean both people had a ton of time into both projects, Both were going for seprate looks though, Ron was Going for scale, Just because it looks 2 colors to you and it doesnt do anyhting for you doesnt mean much, Well i guess it does being ur the judge :D , Maybe Next time we Should have a Majority Vote, So the people of the server can decide which one they like best.. Just a thought, Ne ways nice bodys guys

Also i dont know what it is with you Pro guys dropping back, Its kinda sad people sink to that level just to Win Nothing, But hey thats just another opion. I Honestly think people who drop back should be DQ, I mean that 57 was Entered intermiediate What is that, if thats intermiediate i could imganie Pro.

I was only in the pro class because one comp before i was told i had to move up.. and i also said in that last comp .. if they wanted to bump me to pro feel free but they didn't .. i don't paint as much as i use to so it's not like i'm winning anything
if you look at the one i did that won .. it's only a few colors nothing crazy like TK would do .. so how could you put them in the same class?

nothing against the hummer but the skyline spanks it by far.....come on he has aswitch on the transmitter that turns the lights on and off.....for crying out loud.i think the skylline has more realism as so does the bug.like someone said,if it had no body posts u would sware it was real!(re:bug)

Amateur Judging!

So far, this months competition has been a bit strange :).. but there were some real nice entries!

So to continue with the Amateur contest:

Fester2004
Body:tamiya midnight pumpkin metallic special
paint:body came factory painted shiny metallic
mask:none, used kit supplied decals( i wanna give tamiya big thumbs up,they came pre-cut,yippeee)

Design: 3, This is a little difficult to judge seeing as how I don't think any design really went in to this aside from placing the decals in the correct places. Seeing as how they seemed to be placed in good places I'll give a few points for that.

Execution: 6, Good job on getting the decals to wrap nicely without creasing. They also seem to be placed quite well and fit against edges well. It may just be the photos, though it looks like a lot of the transparent edges around the flames are either not completely adherant to the truck, or there may be dust/debris stuck between the decal and the body. If it's dust/debris.. gotta make sure that the body is clean and your hands are freshly washed before you apply decals ESPECIALLY if they have any transparency to them. Any imperfections will show through especially in direct sunlight or in this case - flash photography.

Difficulty: 3, Not too much painting, masking, molding, or any such things here. Decal application is pretty straight forward so I had to score this a bit low.

Total: 12
--------

Calvin3
Body: HPI 190mm Accord
Paint: Pactra metallic green backed with flat black (cans)
Mask: Just what came in the bag

Design: 4, Nice realistic color. Single color scheme is generally pretty realistic although it may have been nice to at least see some pinstriping down the side. It's possible something could have been done with the wing stand-offs if you weren't going to be mounting a wing. You could possibly cut them off and patch it with a piece of lexan from a wheel well. Just an idea.

Execution: 7, The body seems to be cut out pretty nicely. Nice smooth edges. All decals seem to be applied properly with the exception of the window borders which are good - but they're a little wavey. The mirrors are a nice touch although the actual reflective glass part definitely could be better. It might even be cool to try a piece of aluminum foil attached properly if you don't have any reflective/silver paints. I've never done mirror detailing so I'm not even sure what would be normal procedure on that. Anyway, the antenna looks real nice. Just don't roll that car or you'll never see that thing again! :)

Difficulty: 4, Overall looks real nice!

Total: 15

Congratulations, Calvin 3! Nice looking stuff.

Thanks to everyone who entered this month. This was fun! It looks like Calvin3 will be judging next months Amateur competition as long as haven't moved to a polling system. Let's keep judges! Maybe ad polling but don't take away the judges! Anyway congrats, guys. Thanks again.

First please read this part of the rules.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.

I was rather disappointed to wake up this morning and find such a crazy thread. So Im stepping in. I have always tried to stay an impartial moderator and stick my nose in as little as possible, but now I feel it is necessary.

1) Z-man is the winner end of discussion and controversy. Per the rules of the concourse competition he added all the details he needed to mimic the real car and did so better than anyone else. Gen G's hummer is awesome, but in the concourse competition just paint doesnt do it.

2) If anyone has a problem with the class they are put into, please PM me and we can discuss it. I want everyone to feel they can compete on a level playing field and want to enter as often as possible. (Did we push you to Pro last month? Shoot me a PM)

3) In the future, will everyone please read the rules. I usually bold new or different things each month.

4) Next month we are going to start polling for the winning body. I hope this will remove the chance of something like this happening again.

I will now finally get around to judging the pro's. If more negative things continue to get thrown around I will lock the thread.

adrcracing cuda:

This body is stunning. The engine is perfect (I love the flames on the block!), the open sunroof, the masking for the crome bumpers and the open window make this a great concourse body.

Design: 8 It looks great, can you push yourself to come up with some more ways to use your awesome flames skills? Everyone does flames, how can you step it up a notch?

Difficulty: 8 Im being really tough on you because I know your so good. More concourse detail would have gotten you more points.

Execution: 9 The window cut out is not absolutely perfect, and in the front your airbrush farted giving you a nice little candy red splat. (Yes I looked at it that long to find a fault).

Total: 25

adrcracing Charger:

This body is cool, but the design on the cuda looks better for a street machine. I think these is a great themed body that would probably win in a best paint competition, but in this case it is the lesser of your two greats.

Design: 7 Its an awesome design, but like I said, not as good for concourse.
Difficulty: 7 Lots of tough masking, but again I want to see more concourse details for the concourse months.
Execution: 9.5 There has to be something that is not totally perfect, I just cant find it. :D

Total: 23.5

hgcolors fit:

Where do I start? The LED euro lights? The Ipod subwoofers built into a custom speaker box with carpet and a nitrous bottle? The roll cage? The wheel choice? The hinges on the opening hatch bacK? What about the paint?
You are truly a gifted craftsman. These are the details that every concourse body builder should think about. It is beyond masking, it is about moving beyond the 2D space that is our canvas of choice to create a real functioning model of our favorate cars. After 15 minutes of staring im still noticing new details.

Design: 10 This design is spot on for a show winning import tuner car. Not only is the detail fantastic, but it flows cleanly over the entire body.
Difficulty: 10 The difficulty level of the paint combined with the fabrication of all the custom details makes this a 10. How many hours did it take you?

Execution: 9.5 There has to be something not perfect in your eyes. I know when I paint things I can always pick out every single little error I made, I know you feel that way about something on this car.

Total: 29.5

For your efforts you are the winner HGcolors.

It's funny how this is a "concourse" competition but everyone is very focused (overly)on the paint. To me it's all about the detail not about the paint.

Congratulations HG, as always a killer body! That's two pro wins for you buddy, so no more crashing the intermediate class. OK? Your a pro class detailer now!

Concourse will mean many different things to many different people. I think good paint and good realistic detail work will make a good concourse body. Especially in the pro class. Take HGcolors bodies and if, (a big if) you could paint it to look like the water slide decals he prints along with all the added detail, you would have a better concourse body. IMO I would have picked Zman's Bug to win the intermediate class. It just looks the most real to me, and that's why HG's Bug won when I judged it, and that's why Zman and HG walk away with wins this time.

Thanks for judging Mab.

Hi guys,

I'm sorry that I have been away for quite some time. Looks like I missed a good one. Congrats on the winners and on all that entered. Concours'D Elegance can have many meanings but I've always felt it meant the best of the best. Whenever one is held at Pebble Beach, the winner is invariably the "BEST" example of it's class. I agree with adrcracing's point. I was hoping that there would be more entries. Perhaps a suggestion would be a longer time frame since the winners are based viewer's polls. This would attract more entries. Just a thought. Anyway, congrats to all. Best regards...Mike Villena

adrcracing: I already have that one saved. lo

10 months out of the year we do paint, so I like to switch it up and have a focus on the modeling aspect of our hobby.

Hgcolors: Yeah I did forget. Because it didnt win the intermediate, and was not quite as cool as the fit, it was more trouble than it was worth to move it around. The intermediate people should know that it doesnt really count. What do you have in mind for next time?

Mike: Are you going to be trolling around here more often? Id love to see some of your work in the pro class.

TheGeneralG: That hummer was killer, keep up the good work! If you enter something with that level of detail in a regular paint competition you will score very very well. If you want to go the concourse route, pick a real monster truck or similar idea and work towards it. I cant wait to see your future work.
