View Full Version : Still looking and saving for a new truck

Hi all,
I, after checking out the forums, have changed my mind on buying the DuraTrax 1/8 Nitro Warhead EVO Monster Truck 27 RTR. I really liked the look of the truck but I really didn't hear anything positive on that truck. Thanks! I have a new question. Which of these you all think is a better truck or better value?
Associated 1/8 Monster GT 4.60 SE RTR
or
HPI 1/8 Savage X 4.1 RTR w/2-Channel Radio
They are about the same price as the Duratrax and that is just about what I am looking to spend. I will appreciate all feedback.

I'd go with a Savage X. It is a proven basher and has tons of parts available. Alot of people recommend the MGT, but I don't see what the big fuss it about. Can't go wrong with a Savage...

I'd go with the MGT, I should have mine at the end of next week. My brother has a savage x and he breaks something litteraly EVERYTIME he runs it....and it's a PAIN to work on. I asked these guys here what to get and most people said that the MGT is = to the Savage as far as performance, has a few more features (reverse, nicer radio, pull start or roto) and is ALOT easier to work on. I for one am not in a hurry to try anything HPI, my bros Savage leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I disagree about the Savage being hard to work on. Also, if he breaks something every time he runs it, he should calm down with it. What are some things he's breaking?
I'd go with a Savage X over an MGT any day.

I have a similar question my choices are:
Associated MGT
T-Maxx 2.5
both kinda close in price.
I like the EZ start syatem with the T-Maxx and people rave about the technical support (important to me a nitro newb). But I have gotten little feedback about the MGT. I am a big fan of Associated, always have been, so I was kinda leaning in that direction, With the comments I got in the nitro forums, I am now leaning toward the T-maxx, gonna try to spring for the 3.3 version.
Can anyone give any feedback on the MGT, positive, or not. I would just like to be informed a bit more before I dive in.
The only reason I am not including the Savage, is that I really dont like the look of the verticle chassis plates.

They are not hard to work on at all, i took the chassis off with only about 10 screws, it isn't that hard unless you aren't a good mechanic. Go with the Savage X, way better and TOUGH. I have one and it is awesome.

from personal experiance the savage is very tough, i dont think it is hard to work on, like someone else said u take off some screws and u get the chassis plate off and its easy to clean or fix, its easy to "get to know" and figure out ur way around. plus with all the new x rtrs u get metal diff cases. i dont have any experience with the mgt but it looks decent. it just doesnt seem appealing to me. hope i helped

Dude, calm down. I don't know a lot of threads where people went with the MGT and said they are the best ever. I have never seen a MGT go but i have seen a lot of videos. Just go to http://www.beatyourtruck.com/beatings.html. There is about 70% Savage's and the rest are other trucks or truggies. They do break but if you look at what they are going off of, it is incredible they only break as much as they do.

Well, look at it this way. Whichever you decide to get, You'll be more than happy with :)
In any case, the Savage is reknown for its durability and the MGT is known for it's all around... goodness :D
They have made considerable improvements in how easy it is to work on the Savage with the new X's design, and yes, both trucks will be around the same as far as performance out of the box.
The MGT is more geared towards the racing platform and will be more of a competitor if you ever decide to go racing, it just has more potential. And a Savage is not even designed for it. It's designed for all out bashing, and it's darn good at it ;)
Both have nearly unlimited upgrade potential and great manufacturer/aftermarket support, for years to come, at that. They are both popular trucks, and the bottom line is, you will not go wrong with either.
Cheers
Dave ;)

Well, when he first got it, it would not hold a tune at all and he finally figured out that there was a problem with the carb. HPI sent him another one no questions asked and that solved that problem. He went though 2 plastic spur gears very fast and the 2nd one was installed by supposedly the best rc guy at the lhs. Then he upgraded to a steel one, it lasted about a month of good bashing and then it broke in half. Besides that, the dogbone pops out all the time when jumping (I think he might have fixed that problem though by replacing some pins somewhere). I have a Jato 3.3 (with Moabs)that I put through the same stuff as he does with his Savage and his is broke WAY more than mine and that is saying something because everyone would expect a Savage to be WAY more durable than a Jato.

YES those dam dog bones, i remember, everytime me and my friend jumped, jeese, and he bent his chassic one time when me made a fricken 3ft jump and hit 1 wheel, i did that frm a 9 ft jump with my LST2 and i only broke a upper a arm, i still drove it like that, soem CA glue fixed that :D

I am thoroughly impressed with all the feedback. Thanks to all. I am now kinda leaning toward the MGT, I like the looks and I do go to some races here near my home. The races are on pavement and we share the same track (at different times of course) with many 1/10th scale and some 1/8th scale cars, nitro and electric. I spent last year trying to drive a 1/10th scale electric, but while I was there I really enjoyed the trucks. I am going to try and get some of these truck guys together and do some dirt racing. That would be awesome.
Thanks Again,

EVERYONE KNOWS THAT THIS IS A SAVAGE X RIGHT? NOT A SAVAGE 25. The other ones might have broken a lot but this is a savage x, they have all been figured out and fixed. There is almost no flaws in the x now. HPI has made it a lot better than before. Trust me get a Savage X, way better than the MGT. It is more durable in every way. And about the jato being tougher than a savage, there is something way wrong with his savage. No jato is tougher than a savage. Believe me since this is coming from a basher. I have gone in 3rd gear off a ramp going 45 + mph and flipped about 10 times and just cracked a gas tank, gone off a 15 ft. cliff with a ramp on the top. About 20 ft. of air and nothing is wrong except a hole in the fuel line, which is the same on every car. Don't even say that the line is better on a MGT because it is all the same. I have gone in second gear down hill and hit a rock with the front left side, just broke a bottom a-arm, bent a dogbone. I bent it back and all it was was a quick $10 fix. I have had my stock engine for about 1 year now with it still going as good since the day i got it. And as far as i can see, you have to look dang hard to find some good MGT hop ups. Team Associated doesn't make them like HPI does. There is a whole page of parts on HPI's website. And if you have looked at the videos on the website i posted, you will see a total of about 5 videos of MGT's. Get a Savage X. Trust me. If you want a pic of mine, ill put one up tomorrow. I have lots of upgrades on mine. And for those who just said MGT with no reasons, that isn't very convincing. No matter how big of font it is in.

02-13-2007, 09:37 AM
All I know is that according to UPS.com my MGT will be here tomorrow and come springtime I will be able to form a solid opinion on both of these trucks and trust me, if I'm wrong I'm big enough to admit it. And by the way my bros truck is an X and he bought it new last July. And I wasn't really implying that a Jato is tough than a Savage, just that my Jato is way less problematic than his Savage (and we do the same stuff with them).

02-13-2007, 11:17 AM
Well, hpi had some mistakes early on with the x but fixed them after a couple months. I got mine last january so they were fixed already. One big one was the spur gear mesh, they stripped really easily. And i want to know why seanmanibog thinks the savage x sucks. Have you ever had one and had experience with it before?
SerpentCT4S
02-13-2007, 12:20 PM
That's what I want to know also, why does he think it sucks? Give us your experiences with the truck and tell us what you didn't like. I used to have a Savage 25 and I wasn't that crazy about it. I eventually sold it and I had liked the X, so I decided to get one. I like it a lot better than the 25, no problems with it yet. Its tough, fast, durable. Its got it all you can ask for in a RTR monster truck.
I also have 2 Jato's and I've never broken anything on either of them. One is a street racer and the other is a basher. They're durable but can't be compared to a Savage.

I think it sucks because it has a stupid frame, and there is no breakign point in it either to protect it, since the a arms are like ficken 7075 aluminum, they dont flex or anything, instead on hard impact, it bend the side rails, i mean litterally! its fricken 2 pieces of soft aluminum wedged to plastic. WOW what engineering, the MGT atleast has a mroe realistic frame design, that is FRICKEN bullit proof! and the Associated products overall i find are amazing quality, i got a MGT and it should be heere soon, but for now, ill play with my cousins :D So basically what im trying to say is...

Have you ever driven a Savage x? They have a great chassis set up. More tough than anything out ther. Don't say MGT is tougher. Just ask these guys. www.beatyourtruck.com OK?????????? So if you have never had any experience with either one then i don't think you can say one is better. I have had experience with both so i know what the heck im talking about ok? Just because you think it sucks, doesn't mean it sucks right? Just because someone doesn't believe that China is real because they have never been there or something does it mean they are right? Of course not. So why don't you drive a Savage and come tell me about which is tougher. And you are basicly saying that the a-arms on a savage are too tough am i right? Yea i am. And like ive said before, i drove straight into a rock about 2 ft high going at least 35 + mph, and my chassis is perfect. If you dont have some of these screws in on the upper sides, then it is weaker. If you have them in then they are perfectly fine. The chassis is dang tough. So here is what im saying to you. GO GET SOME REAL FACTS ABOUT THE SAVAGE AND MGT INSTEAD OF WATCHING YOUR COUSIN DRIVE IT AND SAYING IT IS BETTER THAN A CAR YOU HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN GO. OK?

I have the MGT and I can truly say it is one durable truck. I also have a Losi Aftershock, another good truck. I want to add the Savage X to my collection of very good durable trucks. Also, XTM from Globalhobby is coming out with a new MT that is probably going to be the biggest truck available (25 inches long, 17 inches wide and powered with a .28 engine). It will have 8 shocks, reinforced shocktowers. 2speed with steel spurs. Check it out.

AND I HAVE REAL FACTS I LIKE 90 percent of the time play with my cousins MGT and he USES MY LST2 OK SO DONT TELL ME MY FACTS AREN'T STRAIGHT. And the rail design is so stupid, when have u seend a bend MGT chassis, other then one i saw, that got hit by a car. But a head on HIT IS TOTALLY different then what i said, what i mean when u hit 1 wheel on hard impact, it is very likely to bend the chassis, you knwo how many times i hit somethign head on with my LST2? PLENTLY OF TIMES, one time doing a full speed run, and my servo lost power(burnt out) and no brakes, and i hit my dads trucks pretty good, all i broke was part of the bumper brace, although it isn't a MGT it is still equal to the MGT in other ways like, umm, HANDLING, power(pretty even power band range wise i mean) But i fidn the MGT has WAY stronger A arms, my cousin hit a wall at 1 wheel the first day he got it doing a speed run beside a school, and hit the wall, all that happened was the tie rod popped. I can argue all day between the two trucks, or three :D

save, i did that with my LST1 nothing but a money pit it turned out to be, diffs were ran with broken casing(guy never did the alum diff case upgrade like 99percent of people did) and bearings were going left right and center, and the guy NEVERR cleaned this truck, it was awful to look at, and the mud was HARD in the plastic, man i went nuts, but i eventually got it all fixed 200 later

You just don't know when to quit do you. I have a 3 speed so mine goes about 50 mph. Don't tell me about tough. I have set up my truck for extreme bashing. And i have seen plenty of bent mgt chassis. Look at www.beatyourtruck.com, again and check out the gallery. Im not going to sit here and argue with someone who knows nothing about what are good rc's. Anyway it all depends on what this guy wants to do with the truck. So here is my suggestion. Savage x, bash t-maxx, mess around buying stuff all the time siice it breaks. LST's good racers. MGT, good at a little bit of everything. MGT is an alright racer, not as good as lsts. Not as good as basher as savage, just sorta tough. So it is a combo of both. I still recomend a savage x. Here is my huge list of reasons why savage is better ok ericem.
Savage X:
Tons of easy to find upgrades.
EXTREMELY TOUGH!!!!!!
Has the ability of a 3 speed, mgt doesn't.
Metal diff casings on new rtr's
Comes with roto start, which is easier than a pull start. MGT has a pull and shaft but you have to get your own drill.
Easy diff access.
Not hard at all to wrench on, if someone says that then they arent good at working on cars or they do not have a savage x.
Electronics are much more protected.
MGT:
A-arm geometry like a t-maxx, which breaks a lot. I have a t-maxx also.
Slow and slugish, even with a .28 engine. If you got a .28 engine in savage, it would go about 45-50 mph. Without the 3 speed. MGT's top speed is about 36 mph. Stock Savage x is 40 mph.
Good things about the MGT:
Has pull start and shaft start
Good racer. Racing monster trucks is pretty stupid, they are meant to be bashers but companys like losi and associated make them weak.
Has cool flag thingy.
That is about it. Everything that is good on a MGT is on the Savage x also, if not better on the x. Hope i helped.

WOW!!! 4mph DIFFERENCE IN TOP SPEED! I SEE YOUR POINT!! My brother infact owns a MGT, hes had it for almost 4 months and the worst thing is he lost a screw. And he does NOT treat that thing nice when he drives it. I mean it scares me when I watch him its so bad. Even if the mgt is a stunning 4mph slower, I would definately sacrifice that for the much much MUCH better handling. Plus, the MGT is cheaper. And to tell you the truth, I think the MGT you had/used was made in a shady factory. The A-Arms are extremey durable. POINT IS~ They are both good trucks, I just like the MGT better.

That jump was rigged. There were no screws that i was talking about in the upper sides of the chassis. And 4 mph is a lot of difference in acceleration and when the speed and torque counts. And for all u who think the savage x flipps over every 1 degree turn, i have lowered the shock position 1 hole and it no longer flipps over when i turn. I have a rc-solutions roll cage on it also, that makes it more top heavy.

02-13-2007, 10:59 PM
No its not, atleast for a basher.
savage100
02-13-2007, 11:00 PM
I use the acceleration on my savage x a ton. If i have a sweet jump spot with a amall runway, i have to have tons of torque and acceleration, 4mph slower and i wouldn't make any air at all. but i don't see what all the fuss is about. Just get the truck you want. They have their differences, but when it comes down to it, does it matter that much? If this was a real truck, then yes. They are 400 dollar hobby cars. It isn't going to make your life horrible if you can't get as much air as another one. It could affect your life if it was real though.

You see how much air people launch them off of to get those to bend???? I'm seriously getting tired of arguing about this. Just get which you want. And there is only 1 thing better for me about the MGT. THE LITTLE FLAG!!!!! It is pretty cool.
Edit: And my brother crashed my t-maxx into a tree going about 20 mph and broke the whole front end basicly. I never let him drive it anymore. Probably because it was it's last run for a couple months. It still is in pieces.

The only thing that attracts me to the savage is how funny it looks, because the engine sits SO HIGH and affects CG so much!

Actually the savage x is pretty awesome when it is going good. I should make a video of mine sometime. I get some pretty big air. I have also done a double backflip off a tree! :D It was like about 10 ft. of air off a tree!!!
Edit: Oh and ericem, have you ever DRIVEN a savage? It isn't that unstable.

Well, you guys are right. This is turning into a bashfest more than a civilized point-counterpoint "I recommend this truck because..." thing
The bottom line is, you will not be dissapointed with whichever truck you choose to buy. They each have their advantages, and they each have their disadvantages.
In any case, I do think it's not right to bash a truck without truly experiencing it yourself... let someone who actually has one do it  You can make recommendations and share your thoughts based on what you have heard, but remember - opinions are not facts ;)
And what bothers me sometimes is how people go "___ truck is not durable - I launched it off a cliff..." One must remember these ARE 10+ pound solids travelling in excess of 30 mph into other solid objects. We're talking a lot of force here...
Anyways, good luck with your choice :) It helps to see both in person and possibly even in action if you have that option available, to see what they're like and see what they're capable of if you haven't already.

Steering on the Savage X is alot better than on the Savage 25. All you need is bearing and a new servo and it'll turn even better. I dont know why you're so in love with the MGT. Steering doesnt have to be so tight, its a monster truck!!!!! If you want good turning go get a 1/10 touring car. I'm SO glad I bought my Savage X and not a MGT! There are tons of Savages where I bash and only 1 MGT, owned by a young kid. I wonder why there are so many Savages, maybe because theyre better!

Maybe its because most LHS have spare parts for them, but they are to expensive, and the parts can be VERY pricey at times, even for just A-Arms. And hopup support, well its there, but not at your LHS. And alot of people who look at the savage, just want to bash it, and dump it, people who buy the MGT or LST's, they don't want to be serious bashers, just want to have a impressive vehcile, that can still take a hard turn, and not flip. Still, there is something about that MGT, and its just the frame design to be honest, its a more realistic design, from like a full scale vehicle, just the engien is mounted in the back :p. I owned a LST1 and LST2 but i don't go on bragging about it :D

I must say thank you all again. Although some complain about this being the same question asked again and again, it seems that the most of you all really get off on giving your opinions. I used all the opinions expressed, and just this morning, I ordered the MGT. It should be here by next weekend. I can't wait!! I have to especially thank yellowbeejato for the great pictures. 03-12-2007, 11:45 PM
Well, I hate to dig up this awesome thread again but I finally broke in my MGT today and all I can say is Damn, I love this truck!! I followed a break in procedure very similar to Traxxas' procedure and after I was done I found a very good tune by just leaning it out 1/2 turn. I stayed in a big parking lot until I was done with the break in and then I was on and off the lot. I know I didn't buy this truck for on road purposes but I will say that it handles a TON better than a Savage X. The suspension works awesome and articulates very well when turning and I think you would actually have to TRY to roll it over, turning. The speed and power is GREAT! Most people say that the X is a little faster than the MGT but I will have to race my brother soon and find out for myself because if it is, it's not by much. Besides that they say the FOC really dumps alot of weight making the truck faster and so far I can't really see me needing reverse too much.
Now for a couple negatives:
-Do not buy this truck for the pull start, I tried to start it several times after break in with the pull start without success but it would start immediatly with my Craftsman drill.
-Also, do not buy this truck for the cool little flag.............cuz it doesn't last long. I didn't wreck once during the break in or the 4 tanks I bashed around after..........and then I came home and decided to run it around my yard and street and ended up flipping it over 3 different times and now my little flag is pretty raggedy looking and beat up. Oh well.
All in all, a great truck that I'd reccomend to anyone.

Great to hear you love it, today i lost that flag :p and the pullstart broke on the 3 pull :p but i use a losi roto starter, works perfect! on the first tap of the button the engine ALWAYS starts. Ya and remember the savage IS FO if the MGT was a FO ill bet it would kick ass, even in my LST2 IT MADE a BIG difference in performance. Have fun!

03-13-2007, 11:08 PM
Hey all, got the MGT, lovin it, still have the flag, the pull start works fine, and broke lower A arm (right side front) twice. First flipping in a gulley by the side of the road. Second by forgetting to stick antenna out through the little hole (left it inside) went out of range and slammed a concrete curb. NO BRAKES!! when out of range. Drive it almost daily. In changing front A arms I noticed that only one of the two front shocks are dampened. One doesn't seem to have any oil in it. Is this a common thing or does this shock need some oil put in? There are no signs of any leakage from any part of the shock. I believe that putting oil in it would make it stiffer,Right?? That may not be a good thing - it handles great. Maybe I should open a new thread?
Thanks Again All,
Rich W.

yeah, I'm very particular with my hobbies and I made myself wait for a 65 degree day and got it done on the first one. I went offroad bashing today and it was AWESOME! I got to tell ya, I was really expecting this to be alot slower of a truck due to it's size... but this thing flat out moves, and this is coming from someone who's second ride is a Jato 3.3.

called defective product, ive seen and heard about ALOT of defective LST2's, and AFT, ALOT of AFT's, and its a totally different price range. Also the MGT IS NOT a copy of the T-maxx you know, yes it has 8 shocks, but its very popular with alot of MT's, and the a arms architecture, is still a VERY strong, ajustable design you know, and the cahssis is NOTHING liek the T-maxx, the layout of the engine, and the transmission is different, and all internals are MUCH MUCH different. Have you seen a MGT at the track? They kick ass, and all they needs are a few things just like ALOT of vehicles.
Id also like to add this a MGT chassis

ya defintily, people at local tracks don't like to complain though, but there is a guy who made a one way bearing system on the LSTforums, named 2D, and it almost acts like a center diff and works great! Really helps in the corners.

lol i just need to add something else about those problems, a broken pullstart is likely with pretty much any vehicle if they flood it and/or pull it to far. The radio, i think alot of rtr's need the trim to be reset, and the wheel nut, you just need to make sure all the wheel nuts are tight and locktited, just like any vehicle.
