Well this is a project which i am dying to do... ive always wanted an electric big (1/10 and over) machine and finally decided that i wanted to make a sort of crawler....
But as we dont have rocks and things round here to crawl on, i thought why dont i make a hill climbing machine using crawler axles and links? and also to make it a bit more fun, have it geared lower than a crawler so i can go faster and get those wheels turning as fast as those Iceland Hill Climbing machines.
I want the engine to be placed in the chassis and i thought of using HPI Wheely King axles....
Their abit not wide but when i add the 17mm wheel adapters too them for MT wheels they will be wide enough...
My first main question to start thinking properly about this project is, Are the differentials in the Wheely King metal or plastic geared? and if plastic does any company make metal gear upgrades?
Thanks
Ben

I am guessing metal geared, because i don't see why they would be plastic, but i know the tlt uses metal gears. I'm going to check on hpi's website real quick. Oh, and one more thing, you should make it waterproof and make it a hill climber/mud bogger. That would be awesome!
Edit: Yeah, they have metal gears. Go to the parts list at the top of the wheely king page on hpi's website. Scroll down to drivetrain and you will see the metal parts.

Ok thanks alot savage100, so both inner gears and outgears are metal..
Well Ron its gonna take a while, i need to find funds to make it but i got a steady 60 bucks per month coming in and more from wherever i can save, but itll take a while to dont expect for this to happen in one month... ;)

Yeah sorry about the time that its gonna take but if i had the money i would build it in one day, and i wouldnt sleep, nor eat...
More questions... For the drive train i wanted to use steel gears for maximum durability but i can only find steel spur gears in the same pitch as nitros.. so do they make pinions which have pitch similar to nitro gears??? or would it be wiser to stick to plastic spur gears for some reason?? i have no idea, im no electric guy, i run only nitro, so any tip can help
Also i cant find the Wheely King differentials anywhere, and their not I any spare parts lists on any shop... could this mean that it uses the same diffs as other HPI models?? just cant find them.

What transmission are you using? I know the pede tranny has a cover for the spur gear, but i'm not sure which one you plan on using. And are you planning on buying the whole wheelie king or just trying to find the axles?

A steady $60/month. What I wouldn't give to be able to spend every last penny on the hobby and not have to worry about other things like bills/mortgage/food on the table. All I can say is spend it while you can and show us pics.

No i just plan on buying the Wheely King axles and the rest i will buy seperately, the chassis i will cut out myself using inspiration from other crawler vehicles.
Transmission wise, im not using anything, i was wondering whether it would be best to go durable and get a steel spur gear or normal and go with a plastic one?
Im used to nitro where everything is super durable so im not sure if plastic can handle the torque?

Well i figured out that the diffs used are RS4 MT diffs.
So the parts that im gonna need to complete two axles are:
HPI RS4 MT Final Gear Set

HPI RS4 MT Bevel Gear Set

HPI RS4 MT Diff Case

HPI 5x6x29mm Gear Shaft

Hpi Wheely King drive shaft

and then the bearings
knuckles and outdrives to finish it off. and of course the axle cases.
thats will be just to complete the axles.... luckily the parts are not that expensive.
I am also looking for aluminium knuckles for extra durability? does anyone know if the Tlt ones fit?

I love those Icelanding Formula 4X4 beasts....can't wait to see yours.
I have wondered why no one makes ones already.

Hopefully its gonna go like this....
Im not aiming for a scale look at all, i Want performance, able to climb and crawl over anything, but this is gonna be my inspiration.
