Best Paint Competition – March 2007
Lots of changes this month, please read all!! .
The Best Paint competition will be open for entries for the first 3 weeks of the month and will close at Midnight (EST) on Wednesday, March 21st, 2007. At that time I will create a poll which will last for 7 days. Each forum member can vote once for a body in each class. Please vote in all 3, not just the pro. The member receiving the most votes at the end of 7 days will be declared the winner. When voting please take into account the design, the difficulty, and the execution of each body.
Restrictions: Open
(See accompanying thread for this year’s schedule.)
The best paint competition is an opportunity for people to express their unbounded imaginations on an R/C car body. Realism is not required. Let your imagination loose on a piece of plastic to create a work of art.
RULES for Best Paint competitions:
1) Any body may be submitted to the competition (Truck, buggy, touring car, etc).
2) Any body submitted may NOT appear in another RCZone Paint Competition.
3) Photo editing the pictures (other than cropping and adjusting brightness/contrast) is highly looked down upon and may result in disqualification.
4) Anyone may enter a body (professional painters and Modelers are welcome!)
5) Insulting entries or painters in any way will not be tolerated.
6) Restrictions: None.
7) A maximum of 3 entries per person.
8) Recommended 3 photos per entry are submitted.
9) Cars must be painted within the last 6 months.
10) Imagination is key and fun is a requirement.
Each submission must include the following:
Body and chassis manufacturer and size.
Paint used.
Masks used (hand or precut)
Class entered
Failure to follow the rules or failure to submit the required information will result in a disqualification.
Classes of entry (Now three classes. Think of it as creating a higher class then Pro. Intermediate is the old Pro.)
Pro – This class is for those of us who are truly the professionals, the guys who are sought out for their exceptional skill. If you make a sizeable yearly income from airbrushing car bodies or anything else, regardless if it is your full time job or not. If you paint a few bodies a month for local guys at the track or sell to a few people through the net you fall into the Intermediate class. If any one person wins 2 Intermediate class competitions they are moved up to the Pro class and people who have previously won 2 Pro classes are required to be in this level. I want this pro class to gather the best talent around to build their reputation (and customer base) and show off their skills.
Intermediate – If you paint or have painted for money, you must enter into the Intermediate class. If you have won 2 contests in the amateur category, you are automatically moved up to the pro class. If you’ve been painting for years (not for money) and people look at your work and say, “how’d you do that” or "holy crap, that’s awesome!”, then you belong in this category. This shouldn't be a guessing game.
Amateur – This class is designed for beginning to slightly below intermediate painters. If you have been painting RC bodies for several years and people ask you “how’d you do that” or “holy crap, that’s awesome! Do one for me”, then you don’t belong in this class. 90% of rattle can users qualify for this category. If you are confused, the masses will speak out and place you accordingly. If you enter this class and it’s discovered you have painted for money, your entry will be disqualified. Be honest with yourself and to your fellow painters.
Things to think about when voting:
1) Design: How well does the design fit/flow on the body? Is it visually appealing? How are the color choices? Originality does not count, but naturally something that every painter has done will not score as high as something unique and new.
2) Execution: Regardless of how complex or difficult it is, how well is it executed? Are there paint bleeds? Are the lines straight (or correctly curved)? Are their obvious mistakes? Fingerprints in the paint or paint bleeds? How well executed are the fades and other basic painting techniques? etc.
3) Difficulty: How hard was this body to paint? Is it one color? Is the entire thing 5mm checkers with 4 different colors in each square? Are the mask lines through difficult areas of the body (i.e., wing mounts or stadium truck beds)? It may be 2 colors, but is one marbled? Is one color a candy that requires a special backing technique? This is where experience as a painter helps the most.
If contestants have problems, discrepancies, or disagreements with the judges’ decisions, contact Mab_man20 via PM. The judges are just doing their jobs, so please leave them out of the argument.
Viewers of this competition are encouraged to keep their comments to a minimum. Negative, derogatory, or inflammatory comments will not be tolerated. If a contestant makes the aforementioned comments, their entry will be disqualified. Additionally, they will not be permitted to enter the contests for a period not to exceed three months.
Let's show off your talents and above all, have fun. Let the competition begin!!

LOL thanks Nidaho, Im not sure the color i orgianl thought i srayed it pearl purple but it may be Candy purple, i know i bought one can of paint and it was Horriable. the color looked real bad so i went with a Darker metallic purple, i mean u always seen them Camino's done Blue and Red even yellow, I personally wanted a Red one but my GF said purple was the way to go. thanks guys :D I'll see what other "effects" exist. fades, carbon/patterns, marbles, maybe I'll try that water drop effect thing I saw a while back...I'm kinda limited, cant do "true" fire with cans. :P
oh yeah, and dont marble metallics with silver...it looks so cold. gold backing brings warmth to the colors.

You know how when you paint, you paint the inside so the outside is shiny and the inside is rough? Well, if you paint on the outside, it makes the outside rough and flat. If I were to of painted the inside of the bed black, it would have been shiny on the outside (1:1 beds are normally matted and roughish looking), but with the way I did it, it will look rough and matted on the bed, just like in real life. Its a trick I've seen in RCCA and online a few times.

Glassdoctor what did you use for the background in those pictures? Just a white sheet, with a white piece of plexiglass maybe? Looking for suggestions to get some high quality pictures taken like you did with an all white background.
Thanks

well, I did not expect my few sentences in Polish will attract so much interest on this forum ;) On many English forums I saw comments in other languages - e.g. French, German, Dutch etc. and nobody cared about them...
yes, my post meant more or less what you managed to translate. It is funny how funny automatic translations can be (especially when you translate idioms or proverbs) - e.g. once I saw an automatic translation from Polish into English of "thank you in advance" - the automatic translator translated it as "thank you from the mountain" LOL!!!!

ok after geting contact with Mab about this, since I couldnt judge due to polling voting (which is awesome idea), i am offering my feedback on this months entries!
disclamer:I am not a pro painter and I am just offering my feedback.,so please dont flame me on my feedback!thanks!here we go:
Amature Feedback:
1)Tamiya84- el camino- I loved the color, reminds me of a hot rod.what i can tell from the pics is the front stripes could have been placed a little more even, they seem to favor to the right side of the body.also body could have beend mounted starighter for photo.i dont mean to knit pick about that!also i betcha this thing looks awesome outside.i would loved to see this body outside where the sun could bring out its vibrant colors, overall not bad!also if you put the hugger stripes on the tailgate that would have been cool!
2)tamiya84- Hummer- you did a nice job with this 1 too.i like how you added the off road lights to give it more realism!this also would look good in a outside photo!also if you added more detail like painted headlights so and so forth, you would have brought it out more!not to sound picky,i would have wiped the truck down with windex on the body, this is a contest and first inprenstions do count.i have seen you restore various tamiya trucks and you are talented in that very much!
3)Dewil- i loved this paint job!colors work well together.its avery unique paint scheme.the i thing i saw was the silver stripe on the roof and rear quaters could have ended sooner.i think they go back a little too much but overall this paint scheme kicks butt!if you thinned out the silver striper that might have worked too.
4)jasac-This paint job is cool!i love flame paint jobs and you did a nice job!i would have brought the flames in the front up more towatds the windsheild!)i saw thos venst int he fenders might have been a problem with it!1 more thing ,your shadowing around the carbon fiber and flame is a little too rich.keep practicing and you will get beter at that! (i still have to work on that detail myself)over all good job!
5)Mccrash- green/silver -2 color paint and some internal grahics, you couldnt ask any better than that!you pulled this off well!looks awesome!
6)McCrash-dodger mega cab- another cool paint job!simple!i would have maybe thinned out the red stripe but thats my taste!overall looks good!if you maybe painted the rear bumper crhome,it would have highlighed it so more!good job!
7)Bashersmasher- This paint job rocks!2 things ,a little more tlc cutting out the hatches on the hood to give them a mirror image for image on the hood!this another body i would have liked to see outside!i also would have liked to see a beetr shot of the side of the body!you got skills!keep up the good work!
8)tooltime- you have a awesome shme going there!another body i would have liked to see outside!i wish the pictures were a bit up closer, also a little more tlc cutting out the black panels by the rollbar, the rightside is uneven.over all great job!
9)Crash727- you pulled this off great!i loved Herbir fully loaded!,lol!my only thing was i wished the white paint was brighter!overall superb job pulling it off!
10)mini-T-awesome fade job-gtreat outdoor pictures!the roof rack gives the body relaism!if you put more detail in the body like painted headlights OR even stickers,it would have gave it even more realism.great job!
11)Merc4stroke- this is 1 awesome paint scheme.i loved how the color stand out n pop!i betcha it even looks awesome outside where the sun would show it true potential!1 thing thought, the purple outline could be a tad more streadier n a even but overall this 1 rocks!
12)Merc4stroke-another great paint job!i wish the pictures were closer to the body!just take a litle more tlc cutting out the "lick" going to the rear quaters!
13)Merc4stroke- flame buggy-You did a greta job on this 1 too!i would have maybe brought the flames back more, the transition color in the back looks greta but with the flames a bit small it makes it look like its missing something.overall fantastic job ,it gives it that old school look!
Giving feedback wasnt easy!this month was very tough!everyone should be proud of themselfs!you all did a excellent job! (lets all give them a hand)good luck guys!,ahgain you all should be proud of yourselfs!!!!
The one thing i did notice and i will offer it as a tip to everyone:when taking photots try to do it outside on a nice sunny day!this is because the sun really brings out the true paintjob!yes they do look good inside but the sun truley will bring out your paint job!

Fester, thanks for the comments! After looking at pictures of the original Herbie, I noticed that the base white looked just a bit dirty. That's why it looks a little dull, plus I mixed a pearl with a non-pearl paint. Ever since I picked up the body this is how I wanted to paint it. 10)mini-T-awesome fade job-gtreat outdoor pictures!the roof rack gives the body relaism!if you put more detail in the body like painted headlights OR even stickers,it would have gave it even more realism.great job!
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it! Last night I cut the decals out for the lights and put them on. I'll get pics of them later.

Fester- Thanks for the feedback. I was having a hard time with keeping my hands steady but I found that it is because I stand up and paint. I sat down and steadied my arm on the next paint job and voila, better control.
